"Life of Pi" play brings new adaptation of iconic tale to Denver Center for the Performing Arts
"Life of Pi was a book written in 2005 by Yann Martel, which has seen a lot of adaptations across its life," said Taha Mandviwala, the lead actor in the tour.
The story follows the journey of a boy from India who was raised at a zoo. His family flees the country due to political unrest, taking their exotic animals with them on a boat.
"There are many differences between the book and the stage production," said Jon Hoche, one of the directors of the tour.
The story follows the boy's survival journey after the boat he was on crashes, leaving him stranded on a life raft with several exotic animals.
"Translating page to stage, and the discrepancy between the book and the stage play, is understanding the shift in audience," Mandviwala said. "When you have a book, there is a lot more room for nuance, there is a lot more room for details and there is a lot more time to let that marinate."
However, the live production coming to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts requires the show to be transformed into a two hour stage play.
Without giving away the specifics of the show, it is important to note that it is told in a different order than that of the book. For example, details that were left toward the end of the book are what the play opens with.
"There are a lot of creative liberties that are involved in this," Mandviwala said.
"It is like nothing else (audiences) have seen on stage. It has the epic scale of a musical but the heart of a kitchen sink drama," Hoche said. "It has really become this global phenomenon that the book and movie did as well."

Savannah Bananas celebrate foster families with Bananas Foster nonprofit
The Savannah Bananas craze has officially hit Colorado. Banana Ball debuts at Coors Field in Denver this weekend, featuring sold-out, fast-paced, creative baseball games, entertaining fans of all ages. While crowds are dazzled by their performances on the field, co-founder Emily Cole says the team is honored to give back to the communities they visit in other ways as well. During games, the Bananas celebrate foster families and encourage others to get involved with their nonprofit extension, Bananas Foster. Having spent years highlighting youth living in foster care here in Colorado in weekly Wednesday's Child stories, CBS Colorado talked with Cole prior to their Denver visit. "My husband Jesse and I are foster parents," said Cole. "We have adopted our two daughters out of foster care, so we've seen first-hand the struggles that are going on in the system, and we've been doing it for about six years now. We started Bananas Foster in 2023." The Coles got into foster care in a non-traditional way. "I was looking at adoption with my husband, not because we couldn't have children. We have a biological son; it was just something that was on my heart, and I was thinking about adoption and there is such a beautiful space for private international domestic adoption. In my research, I learned about foster care. It made me stop in my tracks and say, rather than wait for a baby to be born to adopt, there are 400,000 children right now in America who need a mom figure." Cole knows that being a foster family is a triumph. That's what keeps Bananas Foster going. "We say, 'Hey, this incredible family is doing this right in your community.' And they get standing ovations, and my favorite part is when we walk them off the field and the crowd is coming into the stairwell and people are hugging and high-fiving and saying I had no idea this was going on in my community." "There are probably people like me who just need to hear about it," continued Cole. "And people who have the love to give and who have a home and want to share it with kids who need them. Savannah Bananas, Lucy Dacus, Nas, Diplo's Run Club, more things to do in Philly this weekend
Weather aside, this weekend is going to be a hot one, Philly! The fun begins with Lucy Dacus as she kicks off Make the World Better Concert Weekend in FDR Park. Rap icon Nas is also taking the stage in Philly with the Philadelphia Orchestra Friday night. The fun continues as the iconic Savannah Bananas are coming to town for two Banana Ball games Saturday and Sunday. Plus, it's the final weekend to catch "Life of Pi" at the Academy of Music. Here's what else is going on in the Philadelphia region this weekend. Citizens Bank Park is going bananas this weekend! That's because the one, the only Savannah Bananas are bringing their signature tricks and gimmicks to South Philly for two games of pure Banana Ball against the Texas Tailgaters this weekend. A Savannah Bananas game is not your mother's baseball game. Between the team's circus-like skills, plus the special rules of Banana Ball, guests are in for a truly entertaining and eventful performance. Tickets to see the 2025 Banana Ball World Tour will cost you a bit, however. Tickets to Saturday's 7 p.m. game start at $96, while tickets for Sunday's 3:30 p.m. game start at $120. The band, active since 1991, has sold over 32 million albums in the U.S. Sam Hunt loves a "House Party," but this Friday, he's calling all country music fans for a night out in Atlantic City. Known for smash hits like "Body Like A Back Road," "Take Your Time," and "Leave the Night On," Sam Hunt is bringing his 2025 summer tour to the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City Friday night. Fellow country musician Austin Williams will kick off the show ahead of Sam Hunt. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets start at $105. The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival is back, illuminating Franklin Square for visitors all summer long. This year's festival celebrates the Year of the Snake and features over 1,000 sculptures placed in nearly 40 brand-new lantern displays. The Delaware State Fair is going out with a bang this weekend, as it closes out its 10-day event extravaganza. The annual celebration is the longest-running and largest fair in Delmarva, beginning back in 1919, according to the fair's website. The final weekend of this family-friendly festival will surely not disappoint. Rapper T.I. and country duo Big & Rich are both scheduled to perform. Additionally, both Friday and Saturday feature a 12-hour lineup of activities for guests to choose from throughout the day. A full lineup of the final weekend's activities is available online. The Delaware State Fair opens at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
