PARTLY FACETIOUS: There is a need to divest the Brown Pope of at least one of his hats

'I do think that the presence of all national leaders, not only regional, be ensured in the assembly…'
'Nawaz Sharif has not yet deigned…'
'He isn't well.'
'Well enough to travel to the UK, but not well enough to travel to Islamabad.'
'Remember Einstein.'
'Right, that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?'
'Nah, you can no longer accuse Nawaz Sharif of taking the same decision that didn't pan out well for him again and again just so he could prove that he was right all along.'
'Why not?'
'Because, my friend, the ground situation has changed.'
'If you are referring to the votes, his party actually got…'
'Nope, I am referring to the fact that his brother is the prime minister, and he isn't, I am referring to the fact that his heir is being constantly challenged by The Brown Pope….'
'I have it on good authority that the Brown Pope has laid down his arms…'
'But to show victory there is a need to divest the Brown Pope of at least one of his hats, I don't think the Interior Ministry hat is negotiable but the hat worn by the Chairman of the Cricket Board…'
'I heard even Talal Chaudhary rejected that hat, the cricket team is at a place where no one wants to take the responsibility, T Chaudhary even agreed to work under the Brown Pope rather than…'
'I know one man who will accept that portfolio.'
'From which party?'
'What?'
'A regional party – in Sindh or in Balochistan, may accept…'
'How about The Maulana? I mean wouldn't he be able to inspire the team and…and he can hold prayer meets….'
'Don't be facetious…..that's as out of the question as…as…as…'
'As was Brown Pope's appointments, but anyway I have it on good authority that Greedy for Portfolios Samdhi will accept the chairman ship.'
'Ha ha ha, anyway, my suggestion is to get Nawaz Sharif and the Man Who Must Remain Nameless and Faceless in the assembly…'
'One of them isn't a member of that august house.'
'This is the land of the Pure – a decision that smacks of purity must prevail.'
'Dear Lord.'

President FPCCI emphasises continuity of policies

KARACHI: President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Atif Ikram Sheikh said that continuity of policies is necessary to continue the journey of economic improvement. Response to the economic survey of Pakistan presented by Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb Minister for Finance & Revenue, he said Pakistan has achieved many successes on the economic front in the past one year and the economic survey does not reflect economic successes in this way. Pakistan has made a good economic recovery, the government needs to take this recovery towards stability, he added. This year, the size of the economy has exceeded $ 400 billion for the first time, which is a great achievement, said Atif Ikram Sheikh. However, he was of the view that in addition to these achievements, more work is needed on many sectors of the economy. The major decline in large-scale manufacturing in the current fiscal year is worrying, he expressed. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

KMEDA urges govt to revisit ‘unjustified' taxes, duties

KARACHI: Karachi Mobile and Electronics Dealers Association (KMEDA) has presented key suggestions ahead of the budget 2025–26, urging for tax reforms on electronic items. President of the KMEDA Minhaj Gulfam has put forward these proposals to the federal government. He urged the federal government to consider a substantial and immediate reduction in what he described as 'unjustified taxes and customs duties' on mobile phones, laptops, computer parts, tablets, and other electronic products. Gulfam highlighted that the current fiscal year's high tax rates on electronic items have created serious challenges for the business community, as well as, for customers. 'These excessive duties have disrupted imports and caused a significant rise in retail prices, placing a heavy burden on consumers.' He said that these products are essential in the digital era, playing a crucial role in education, employment, freelancing, online business, and the overall vision of a 'Digital Pakistan.' According to him, the existing tax regime is one of the main obstacles to growth in this sector. He asked the government review its tax policy in the upcoming budget and take meaningful steps to ease the financial pressure on both businesses and consumers. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Adviser to KP CM accuses federal govt of manipulating data, misleading public

ISLAMABAD: The adviser to the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on finance, Muzzammil Aslam, on Monday accused the federal government of manipulating the data presented in the Economic Survey for 2024-25 and misleading the public about the state of the economy. In a video message released to the media shortly after the government unveiled its Economic Survey for 2024-25, Aslam accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's administration of misleading the nation through manipulated figures in an effort to sustain its narrative and hold on to power. He said that the government had used the so-called 'Form 47 approach' – a reference to alleged electoral manipulation – not only to form its administration but also to manage public perception, including during the recent release of the Economic Survey. He rejected government claims of economic stability and recovery, saying that inflation, unemployment and international isolation had worsened. Citing the government's own economic indicators, he said the country's GDP growth had fallen short of targets. 'This year's GDP stands at 2.7%, well below the 3.6% target set last year. I told the prime minister directly last week that this is not something to boast about – it's figure fudging,' he said, recalling a meeting with Sharif. 'Instead of misleading the nation, the government should face economic realities.' Referring to the World Bank, he said 110 million Pakistanis – out of a population of 240 million – were now living below the poverty line, arguing that the government had 'completely crushed the poor.' He also challenged the government's assertion of growth in the livestock and industrial sectors. Further citing official reports, he said agriculture had shrunk by 13.5%, with major crop yields in decline. 'There is no truth in the government's claims of recovery when key sectors are underperforming.' He added that core inflation stood at 11.6%, challenging the government's assertion that inflation had eased. 'Does this look like inflation is going down? Clearly not,' he said.
