Yonkers man pleads guilty just before jury selection in fatal shooting outside bar
A Yonkers man who was harassing people outside a city bar late last summer before pistol-whipping and fatally shooting a 25-year-old man has pleaded guilty in the case.
Carlos Villanueva, 31, initially charged with second-degree murder in the Sept. 8, 2024, killing of Celestino Vasquez-Patricio, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on Monday, June 16, after he was promised a 21-year prison term.
At about 3:40 a.m. the morning of the shooting, Villanueva was on South Broadway between Ludlow Street and Highland Avenue hassling pedestrians and telling them he had a gun, prosecutors said in court documents. He even grabbed one person's hand and touched it to the gun in his waistband.
Moments later, Vasquez-Patricio and a friend left a pool hall on the block and got on line to enter Go Sports Bar & Lounge. Villanueva confronted Vasquez-Patricio, thinking he had shouted something at him, and started menacing him. Villanueva walked back and forth in front of the bar, at one point lifting his shirt to reveal the gun.
Security guards at the bar tried to calm Villanueva down, but when Vasquez-Patricio and his friend began to leave, another confrontation ensued. Villanueva then pulled the gun out, struck Vasquez-Patricio on the head and shot him in the chest.
A police car was on the scene almost immediately and Vasquez-Patricio collapsed in the front seat. Police began rendering aid and Vasquez-Patricio was then taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he was pronounced dead two hours later.

Villanueva walked away but was caught by Yonkers police moments later around the corner on Ludlow Street. He immediately denied any wrongdoing, insisting he had no weapon on him. But police soon found the gun, a 9mm Ruger, in a yard Villanueva had passed moments earlier. Forensic testing later identified his DNA on the gun's grip and slide, prosecutors said in court documents.
Villanueva pleaded guilty Monday as jury selection was expected to start. He would have faced up to 25 years to life in prison on the murder charge. He was returned to the Westchester County jail to await sentencing, which Westchester Judge Maurice Dean Williams scheduled for Aug. 1.

Accused road rage killer of Bronx Navy veteran tried to flee country: DA
The accused gunman in the fatal Bronx road rage shooting of a young U.S. Navy veteran was arrested trying to board an international flight to escape justice, prosecutors said Tuesday. Michael Aracena had abandoned the car he drove during the fatal clash and was about to hop on a flight to the Dominican Republic when NYPD cops arrested him for allegedly shooting 27-year-old Keino Campbell to death, prosecutors said during the suspect's arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court. Wearing a brown hoodie and sporting braided hair tied in the back, Aracena, 20, said nothing as Judge Scott Krompinger ordered him held without bail. Aracena is charged with murder, manslaughter, and weapons possession and could face 25-years-to-life in prison if convicted of shooting Campell after they got into a fender bender near Co-op City about 2 a.m. Saturday. An accomplice handed Aracena the gun used to shoot Campbell in the chest as the victim sat behind the wheel of a 2012 gray Infiniti, prosecutors said. Mortally wounded, Campbell sped off to the nearby corner of Givan and Palmer Aves. in Baychester, where he fell unconscious, police said. Medics rushed Campbell to Jacobi Medical Center, where he died a short time later. The accomplice who passed Aracena the gun is still being sought, officials said. Following the shooting, Aracena, who lives on the Upper West Side, drove to Pennsylvania, where he abandoned his car, according to prosecutors. He then bought a ticket to the Dominican Republic, officials said. 'The defendant was apprehended attempting to board an international flight,' Bronx Assistant District Attorney Janene Carter said in court. 'Before going to the airport, defendant fled to Pennsylvania, where his car was recovered.' When he was apprehended, Aracena had multiple passports on him, Carter said. 'I knew that God would bring this to justice,' Campbell's aunt Vermaline, 49, told the Daily News on Monday after learning of Aracena's arrest. 'Keino was a spirit that was godly and I knew that God would make whoever did this to him get justice.' 'You took a person's life for a car? Are you crazy?' the aunt, who asked that her last name not be used, added. 'He chased him down. That's crazy to me. Who even hears of road rage anymore? I didn't even think that these things still happen.' Relatives said Campbell served at a military base in San Diego from 2019 to 2022. His plans of becoming a pilot were dashed because of eyesight issues. He went on to dream of doing security work at the White House or becoming an electrical engineer, for which he planned to go back to school, according to his family. 'He said it would take a while to get there, but he was telling me all these steps,' his mother, Suzette Thomas, told The News Sunday. 'This boy always thought ahead because he wanted to make sure his family wasn't in poverty. He dreamed big.' 'I know he would do such great things in this world if he had a chance,' she added. Double shooting outside Bronx smoke shop leaves 2 men in critical condition
Two men — possibly brothers — were shot in the Bronx Friday night, with both near death, police and sources said. The pair were hanging out outside a smoke shop on Dyre Ave. near Light St. in Baychester — near the last stop on the No. 5 subway line — when a man opened fire around 7:45 p.m., striking one of them, 40 years old, in the neck and the other, a 30-year-old, in the collarbone, cops said. 'It was the two brothers hanging out in front of the smoke shop,' an eyewitness who did not want to be identified said. 'The guy came across the street shooting. He hit both of them, one in the neck. He was bleeding bad. It looked like he was going to die.' Medics rushed both men to Jacobi Medical Center, where they are in critical condition. Cops could not immediately confirm if the two are brothers. So far there have been no arrests. Police have one man in custody but couldn't say if he was a suspect or simply a person of interest. The investigation is ongoing.
