Rangers secure draw in Athens to keep Champions League dream alive
Russell Martin's side left the Greek capital with a 1-1 result that secured a 3-1 aggregate win and booked their place in the third-round qualifiers.
They have now guaranteed European league phase football this season and are just two ties away from reaching the continent's top competition for the first time since 2022.
Despite taking a two-goal lead into the game, it wasn't all plain sailing for the visitors who had to survive more than a few nervy moments, particularly in the first half.
It looked as though qualification would be a tall order when Filip Duricic opened the scoring for Panathinaikos early in the second half to put the home side 1-0 up on the night.
But, just as he did last week, Djeidi Gassama came off the bench to score a vital equaliser that restored a two-goal aggregate lead.
Rangers had to withstand some early pressure as the hosts looked to get themselves back into the tie with a string of attacks.
Tasos Bakasetas fired just wide of the post within the first five minutes before Facundo Pellistri forced a crucial save from Jack Butland.
The Rangers goalkeeper was forced into action again soon after when he turned a close-range header from Fotis Ioannidis behind for a corner.
Panathinaikos continued to dominate possession, and Pellistri should have scored midway through the first half when Duricic took advantage of some slack defending to cut the ball across the box to the Uruguayan forward, but he failed to get his shot on target.
Rangers were living dangerously at this stage as they struggled to keep hold of the ball or get out of their own half.
Nico Raskin came close to grabbing a vital away goal against the run of play towards the end of the first 45 when he headed a Joe Rothwell cross over the bar.
The game remained goalless at the break as Rangers took their two goal aggregate lead into the second-half.
The home side broke the deadlock just ten minutes after the restart when Duricic headed past Butland to make it 1-0 on the night and reduce the deficit.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but awarded after a lengthy VAR check found the Serbian to be onside.
However, Rangers restored their two-goal lead almost instantly when Gassama fired a volley past the Panathinaikos goalkeeper with his first touch after coming off the bench to make 1-1 and 3-1 on aggregate just before the hour mark.

Mikey Moore is here to help Rangers win
The highly-rated 17-year-old attacker joined the Ibrox outfit from Tottenham on a season-long loan on Friday morning. The move is subject to international clearance – which, due to his age, may take more time than usual – and he is unlikely to feature in the William Hill Premiership opener against Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday. 😍 — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 1, 2025 Gers boss Martin, whose side won through to the Champions League third qualifier against Viktoria Plzen with a 3-1 aggregate win over Panathinaikos in Athens on Wednesday night, admits the development of players is key to his football philosophy but is adamant Moore is coming to Glasgow to make Rangers successful again. He said: 'It was a reason why I got a job at Swansea from MK Dons, for sure, developing young players, and then a big reason why I got a job at Southampton as well. 'We enjoy working with young players, enjoy playing a part in their development, and I think we can help Mikey, but most importantly he can help us win on the pitch. 'We're not here to just have other teams develop football players. We're here to win and he can help us do that. 'And if we can win when developing people and players as well, then that's the ultimate goal. 'It's a brilliant signing for the club. It'll be good for us and good for Spurs, hopefully to help his development. It'll be good for Mikey. 'So I think it's a really good move for everyone and I think he'll definitely add to us as a big option on the pitch and in the forward line. 'He can play in a few positions and he's a super-talented boy, so we're excited to have him. 'I think age is irrelevant really. If you're good enough, you're old enough and I certainly think he's good enough to impact games for us and help us win games of football. 'I'm really pleased and delighted that Spurs have allowed him to come here because a lot of people were interested in Mikey and he was desperate to come in. 'I said that we need people to be desperate to come here and play football and he was that.' Asked if the arrival of Moore may curtail the development of 19-year-old attacker Findlay Curtis, who had been a feature of the Gers squad so far this season, Martin said: 'No, no, I think the more options we have in the top line the better and Findlay's really versatile, as is Mikey. 'I don't think it stunts one of our own. I think it helps him playing with a really top player all the time and picking up and learning. 'Findlay is such a good learner, so I don't see it as being harmful to him at all.'

There has to be ambition from everyone – Brendan Rodgers sends contract message
Rodgers is entering the final season of his three-year deal and told principal shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Michael Nicholson that he is not interested in performing a maintenance job. The Celtic manager reiterated he would be going nowhere of his own volition before his contract expires but his long-term future remains unclear. Asked about his contract situation ahead of Celtic's William Hill Premiership opener against St Mirren on Sunday, Rodgers said: 'Dermot and Michael and I had a conversation over the summer on where we were at. 'I said: 'I'm very happy here'. There's conditions we want to be able to improve and be better because I'm not the type of manager that's good at maintaining anything. If it's just something to maintain, I'm not the manager of Celtic. It'll be someone else. 📸Focused on Sunday#CELSTM | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) August 1, 2025 'But to build and grow and develop and push, then of course I love being at Celtic. 'I'm not the one that's going to sit here and just maintain levels. My commitment here to Celtic is this is a really fast-moving club and you have to keep moving, move quickly. 'It's one of the biggest clubs in world football. It has a demand and an expectation on it and the only way you get better within that is by improving and developing.' Rodgers stressed he was not saying the club had to match his own ambition. 'I don't want to be really arrogant to say that,' he said. 'Celtic clearly has an expectation and should have an expectation because of the size of the club we are, and what the demands are here. 'What I'm saying, for clarity, I love being here. And, yes, there's been some challenges on and off the pitch since I've arrived, but that's management, that's coaching. But in the main, I've absolutely loved it here and I will continue to do so however long that is. But like I said, there has to be that ambition from everyone. 'In terms of my situation, I'm relaxed on it only because I know what I give every single day. And if the club choose to offer (a contract) and see that as the way forward, great. If not, it doesn't really matter to me in relation to what I give to the job. 'My ambition is for Celtic. It's not for me. My ambition is for Celtic to be the best that it can be. 'I've been in the game quite a long time now. So I think I understand what we need to succeed. We did that last year. We brought in certain players that helped our profile when we moved into the Champions League. And those players really helped us in the Champions League. 'So my ambition now is to keep us going in that direction. And that's what our conversations are about.' Rodgers has stressed the need to bolster their attacking options in recent weeks. Shin Yamada arrived as a belated replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi but the sale of Nicolas Kuhn to Como has compounded a lack of wide players following the long-term knee injury Jota suffered in May. Rodgers said: 'There's no doubt I would have liked to have had players in now, but it's not the case. I'm not going to kill my own joy and overthink. I focus on what's here. We know the work that we need to do and it's my responsibility to convince the club that we really need them. 'Clearly, I'm not doing that job as well as maybe what I can, but I will continue to pursue that because it's something that's really important for us.'
