Kolkata gang rape case of 24-year-old law student has taken a significant turn as technical evidence, including CCTV footage and call data records, has been analysed and found to corroborate the victim's statement. The investigation team is now gearing up to interrogate students to further verify the facts of the incident.
According to the police, the vice principal of the institution has confirmed that none of the accused persons had access to the CCTV feeds, which suggests that the footage has not been tampered with.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, people from diverse backgrounds united in solidarity, participating in protests against the gang rape of a law college student in Kolkata. Demonstrations took place outside South Calcutta Law College, the alleged crime scene, and Kasba Police Station, where the First Information Report (FIR) was filed.
Protests spread to different parts of the city by evening, including Jadavpur, Rashbehari, and Harzra. Supporters of 'Abhaya Mancha" a group created after rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital and Medical College on August 9, 2024, participated in the protests, along with students and the elderly.
The investigation into the incident has seen significant progress, with the medico-legal examination and the survivor's statement under Section 183 of BNSS being completed. To expedite the probe, the Kolkata Police has bolstered the Special Investigation Team by increasing its personnel to nine officers.
The protests on Sunday brought back memories of the massive protests after the horrific crime at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last year.
'Yesterday, till midnight, I spoke to the victim's parents. I told them I would come and meet them. They were very tense and wanted cooperation. Today in the morning, when we tried to reach them, they did not pick up the phone. When I asked the police, they said they don't know. When I asked SP Bauruipur, he said their house was under lock and key," she said.
'I visited, and they cooperated, but the pace of occurrence was sealed; they did not allow me to record. They said if we record, they will seize it. How is that possible? I'm going to Delhi and will discuss and give a report. We are disappointed," she added.
The police have arrested three people, including the main accused, in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student inside the college campus on Wednesday, June 25. A five-member special team has also been constituted to probe the incident.

Gurgaon police arrest Gujarat woman linked to Cambodia-based cyber fraud syndicate
The Gurgaon police Sunday arrested a 24-year-old resident of Surat in Gujarat at the Delhi airport for her alleged involvement in a cyber fraud racket operating from a call centre in Cambodia. Khushboo was arrested in connection with a 'digital arrest' case, where fraudsters posed as police, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Customs officers to extort money by threatening victims with fake charges of illegal activities. A Gurgaon police spokesperson said the woman will be produced in a court Monday for police remand. Two mobile phones used in the cyber fraud were recovered from her possession, the spokesperson added. The case stems from a complaint lodged on December 4, 2024, at the Cyber Crime (East) Police Station in Gurgaon. The complainant reported that her son received a call claiming his Aadhaar card was linked to hawala transactions. When he denied the allegations, the fraudsters, posing as police officers, threatened to register a First Information Report (FIR). A fake CBI officer then contacted the victim via video call, claiming he was under 'digital arrest', and coerced him into transferring money under the pretext of resolving the fabricated hawala case. The police registered a case under the relevant sections based on the complaint. The investigation, led by Priyanshu Diwan, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime), and Inspector Amit Sharma, revealed that Khushboo was part of a Cambodia-based call centre, Mango Park, in Phnom Penh, involved in 'digital arrest' cases. The syndicate operated in three stages — the victims were intimidated with claims of their mobile numbers or Aadhaar cards being misused, fraudsters then posed as police officers to enforce a 'digital arrest', and impersonated Customs or Income Tax Department officials to extort money through bank transfers. The police investigations also showed Khushboo intimidated victims, and was paid a monthly salary of $700 for her role. The call centre, reportedly run by individuals of Chinese origin, employed people from India and other countries to execute these frauds. Similar call centres operate across Phnom Penh and other parts of Cambodia, the police said. The probe uncovered that Rs 39 lakh collected through the fraud was transferred to a bank account belonging to a man called Surendra, who sold the account to another accused, Mitesh, for Rs 5 lakh. Acting on instructions from his brother Bhargav in Dubai, Mitesh sold the account to Khushboo. She had travelled to Dubai in November 2023 for a job through a friend's husband, and later moved to Cambodia in August 2024 to work at the Mango Park call centre. So far, 16 people, including Khushboo, have been arrested in connection with the case, the Gurgaon police said, and further investigation is ongoing.

Over 90 families evicted, several houses bulldozed in Assam's latest eviction drive
More than 90 families were displaced by an eviction drive in Assam's Nalbari district on Monday, the second such eviction exercise in the state this month. According to Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Nibedan Das Patowary, the eviction was carried out to clear encroachment on 453 bighas of village grazing reserve (VGR) land in the Barkhetri revenue circle. Ahead of the eviction, the district administration had issued prohibitory orders under section 163 of the BNSS in the Bakrikuchi Reserve, disallowing the assembly of more than five people. The order cited a 'likelihood of breach of peace and tranquility' there, and in nearby areas, and the need to prevent attempts to 'thwart the successful completion of the eviction drive'. On Monday morning, 12 bulldozers and over 500 police personnel arrived at the site to carry out the eviction. 'There was no untoward incident. There are 93 families living here, and there were 319 houses and other built structures here. Since this is VGR land, it is a policy of the Revenue Department to clear such government lands. When we told them to vacate the area earlier, they went to the Gauhati High Court, but did not get relief there. So now, we gave them seven days' notice to vacate the area, and most people vacated their homes themselves on Sunday,' DC Patowary told The Indian Express. The affected families are Bengali-origin Muslims. Like in the case of the eviction drive that took place two weeks earlier in Goalpara district, where over 600 families were evicted from a wetland area, the affected families said they had moved to the area after their previous settlement was lost to river erosion. 'We have been living here for 28-30 years. We moved here in the 1980s from other parts of Barkhetri itself, like the Bhanganmari, Kurihamari, and Bhelengimari panchayats after land was lost to erosion. We occupy only around 80 bighas of land and live bare lives here, with most people working as daily labourers on farms,' said Fakar Uddin Ahmed (40), whose home was demolished on Monday. Apprehending an eviction in 2016, residents of the area had approached the Gauhati High Court against it, submitting that they had been in possession of the land since 1981 and that they had settled there because of river erosion. However, on June 18, a Gauhati High Court Bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi did not allow an extension of the interim order protecting them from eviction, stating that this is 'in view of the clear stand of the State that the land in question is VGR land'.

Plea in Supreme Court seeks judicial intervention into Kolkata rape case
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): A plea (letter petition) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking urgent judicial intervention in the recent alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student in South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. The petitioner, Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput, has sought a court-monitored CBI investigation of the incident to ensure an impartial and time-bound probe, free from political influence. Furthermore, the plea seeks immediate protection for the victim, her family members, witnesses, and her legal representatives. The plea has also sought directions from the top court to implement comprehensive safety measures in educational institutions, including mandatory CCTV surveillance, women's safety cells, and regular security audits. Additionally, the plea also seeks an interim compensation of Rs 50 lakhs for the victim's medical treatment, rehabilitation and legal expenses. Moreover, the plea urges the Court to take action against public representatives engaging in victim-shaming. On the evening of June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for a proper investigation into the case. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10 pm on Wednesday (June 25) within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested the next day (June 26), near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation. (ANI)
