Customs seizes RM4.4 million in smuggled e-waste and metal scrap
Director Mohd Asri Seman stated that the operations, conducted simultaneously on May 21, were a joint effort between the Bentong Customs Enforcement Division and the Selangor Department of Environment.
'In the first raid at 1.15pm, three 40-foot containers were found to contain 46,726kg of e-waste valued at RM700,890, believed to have been imported without a permit or proper customs declaration,' he said during a press conference.
The second operation uncovered four containers carrying 105,760kg of aluminium flakes, falsely declared as other goods, with an estimated worth of RM3.7 million.
Mohd Asri explained that such imports require approval from the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) and are regulated by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
Investigations revealed that the smugglers misdeclared the items as copper concentrate to evade import permit requirements. Both cases are being probed under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.

KUALA LUMPUR: Graftbusters have raided 28 companies allegedly involved in a scrap metal and e-waste smuggling syndicate operating across five states, which is believed to have cost the government over RM950 million in lost export tax revenue to date. Sources revealed that the raids were carried out by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) Special Operations Division (BOK), through the Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF), in collaboration with the Customs Department, Inland Revenue Board and Bank Negara Malaysia since July 14. "Investigations are ongoing, and to date, 32 individuals have had their statements recorded. "No arrests have been made yet, but the probe remains active," the source said. The source added that assets worth RM332.5 million have been frozen or seized so far. "This includes RM149.5 million in bank accounts, vehicles valued at RM1.8 million, properties worth RM15.5 million, land worth RM165 million and luxury watches valued at RM700,000," the source said. Meanwhile, MACC Special Operations senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the raids. He said the case is being investigated under Sections 16 and 18 of the MACC Act 2009, as well as for offences related to money laundering. It was reported that MACC has recorded a statement from a man with the title Datuk Seri, who is believed to be linked to the smuggling syndicate. It was previously reported that scrap metal was being smuggled out of the country for export by falsely declaring it as machinery or other types of metal not subject to the 15 per cent export tax imposed by the government. The 'Datuk Seri' is believed to be among those involved in the illegal export of scrap metal to evade the tax. The MACC, through Op Metal, which began on July 14, had]s uncovered that the smuggling of metal scrap has resulted in over RM950 million in revenue losses to the country over the past six years, averaging RM160 million annually.

GOF seizes RM155k in contraband goods in Kota Bharu raid
KOTA BHARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized smuggled cigarettes and subsidised controlled goods worth RM155,000 during raids on a premises and a house in Kampung Kedai Buluh. The operation, conducted on July 21, was part of Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan. GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the raid followed intelligence reports and public tip-offs. The team discovered 61,620 sticks of untaxed cigarettes, 1,088 kg of cooking oil, 1,500 kg of wheat flour, 763 kg of white rice, and 400 kg of glutinous rice. 'The caretaker of the premises, a 27-year-old man, was detained for further investigation. Documents related to the goods were found to be dubious and non-compliant with licensing conditions,' he said. The seized items were handed over to the Kota Bharu District Police Headquarters, the Kelantan Paddy and Rice Regulatory Division, and Kota Bharu KPDN for further action. The case is being investigated under multiple laws, including the Customs Act 1967 and the Control of Supplies Act 1961. - Bernama

RM500,000 fags, vehicles seized in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Marine police confiscated 215,600 sticks of various brand cigarettes and two vehicles from a house in Silam, here, on Tuesday. Sabah (Region Four) Marine Police Commander ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim said a team from the Unit Gempur Marin raided the house at 5.30am. He said a local in his 20s was arrested to assist in the investigation. 'The seizures, including the vehicles, were worth RM507,590,' he said, adding the case would be investigated under the Customs Act 1967. Meanwhile, police arrested three foreigners and seized drugs believed to be syabu in two separate operations by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division, here, on Tuesday. District Police Chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the first suspect, a 35-year-old Indonesian, was detained at 1.30pm at Jalan Panji. He said police found a translucent plastic packet containing substances believed to be syabu weighing 0.27gm in the suspect's possession. The case would be investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952. 'On the same day, police arrested two men from the Philippines inside a hut in a plantation in Jalan Tengah Nipah and seized 5.45gm of syabu, a modified straw and aluminium foils. 'One of the suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine,' he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 39A(1) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952. Dzulbaharin said all the suspects were currently in their custody for further investigations.
