Irish punter celebrates after placing £10,000 winning bet at Punchestown

An Irish punter put the bookies in their places by winning £21,000 from a £10,000 bet at the Punchestown Festival.
The punter placed a staggering £10,000 on red-hot favourite Galopin Des Champs, who proceeded to storm to victory by 22 lengths from Spillane's Tower in Wednesday's Punchestown Gold Cup.
The punter in question, who operates horse racing tipster account on social media, shared his bet with his followers, showing off a betting slip that shows a £10,000 stake on the 11/10 favourite.
Willie Mullins' star duly delivered, taking home the Punchestown Gold Cup for the first time and easing concerns after failing to defend the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March.
Mullins has seen some special things in his time, but even the Closutton was blown away by Paul Townend's ride on the two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup king.
"We all have the horse of a lifetime," Mullins said of the winner, who returned at odds of 5-6. "He's phenomenal. Paul showed him off today. He was asking him for every jump and the horse responded every time, he was loving it.
"To win a race like that, beating that opposition by 22 lengths, I thought was spectacular."

Drop in trip should suit Comanche Brave at Leopardstown

The feature on Thursday evening's card in Leopardstown is the Group 3 Barberstown Castle Stakes and Comanche Brave can build on a fine effort in the Irish 2,000 Guineas by claiming victory here. In the colts' classic, Donnacha O'Brien's horse outran his odds of 50-1 by finishing fifth behind Field Of Gold. That was his first try at a mile and while he probably stays the trip well enough, the return to seven furlongs is a positive at this stage of his career. If we look back one more race, to his seasonal debut, he finished runner-up to Henri Matisse in a Group 3 over Thursday's course and distance, and the winner gave that form a fine boost by winning the French 2000 Guineas on his next start. Everything points to Comanche Brave being a progressive sort, and he should take a great deal of beating. Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle and can get him home in front, with Cowardofthecounty the one to chase him home. At much bigger odds, Easy could reach the frame. The nap goes to Shakazia, who can continue the good run of trainer Johnny Murtagh by taking the second race, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies' Maiden. Quite well beaten but certainly not disgraced on her only start at two, she made her return little over a month ago and produced a much-improved display to finish runner-up behind the useful Sound Of Lightning. There was a bunch finish for the places in that races, which makes the form more difficult to assess, but she did well to finish so close considering she was keen early and had to make plenty of ground from off the pace. This does not look to be the strongest of races and a little progress from that outing, which can be expected, ought to be enough to help her earn her stripes. San Aer is without a win since late 2023 but Tom Mullins' gelding ran well in defeat in a premier handicap on his most recent start and will find 'The 1878 At 3Arena' Apprentice Handicap a more manageable affair. He is preferred to Lady Lunette, who was disappointing last time out but would be a leading player if return to her best form.

Historic pub on Dublin's Parnell Street offered for €2.25m

It is being sold by the Broder family and in 2010 this newspaper reported that they bought it for around €1m. Subsequently they undertook a major investment and extended the premises to include Parnell Street's only rooftop terrace bar, Captain Moonlight's, as well as the Rua Cocktail Bar on the first floor. Over the years the pub was strongly associated with Irish television's early political humour when the Hall's Pictorial Weekly programme satirised Irish local party councillors by naming one of them Parnell Mooney, which had been the well-known name of the pub for the best part of a century. That character was played by the late Frank Kelly who went on to play the drunken Fr Jack Hackett in Father Ted. Located in a historic position on Parnell Street, just off O'Connell Street, opposite the Rotunda Hospital and adjacent to Henry Street, The Parnell Heritage Bar & Grill which extends to 700 sqm. Shane Markey of Lisney describes the premises as being in very good trading condition and offering spaces for day trade, dining and events. He believes it has significant potential for further growth.
