Thanthi TV posted a video of Vijay, claiming, 'A mysterious person hit Vijay on the head and caused commotion at the airport.' In the video, the actor can be seen walking into the airport when he reacts to something before straightening himself and heading inside. He smiles as numerous fans call out to him, nodding in acknowledgement before going in.
However, his fans also posted videos of what happened, taken from numerous angles, claiming he 'just slipped' on his way in. '.@ThanthiTV is spreading false news, twisting the leader's stumble into an attack by a mysterious person...!! We strongly condemn such fake news,' wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter).
Another wrote, 'Here's a clearer video. It's disappointing to see baseless rumors about Thalapathy Vijay's safety being spread. No one attacked him and it was just a slip. Dear @ThanthiTV, kindly refrain from spreading misinformation and stick to the facts.'
A fan called out the channel for 'spreading misinformation', writing, 'It's shameful that baseless rumors are circulating about Thalapathy Vijay's safety. There was no attack—his leg simply slipped. @ThanthiTV, please stop spreading misinformation and report the facts accurately!'
Vijay will soon star in H Vinoth's Jana Nayagan, his final film. Also starring Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju, it is slated for release during Pongal 2026. Vijay confirmed that this will be his last project at a TVK meeting in February. He said that he has no interest in making films anymore and would like to focus on politics, committing himself to the welfare of the people instead.

How OTT platforms are reshaping the film releases for Tamil films

In recent years, digital streaming platforms have moved beyond just being content distributors, they've become key players in how Tamil films are planned, produced, and released. What started as a secondary window for films post-theatrical release has evolved into a powerful, and sometimes controlling, influence over the entire lifecycle of a movie. As the digital space grows increasingly competitive, platforms are pushing to secure exclusives, shorten theatrical runs, and even shift movie schedules altogether. This tug-of-war is now visibly reshaping the way Kollywood operates. Streaming platforms are shaping the release schedule OTT platforms have become a major force in the decision-making process around the film release. Recently, films like Thalapathy Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' and Siva Karthiyakan's 'Madharasi' allegedly changed their release dates due to the input of streaming partners. These platforms are now not only deciding when a film goes online but also when it hits theaters in the first place. This strategy allows them to align the material drop with a period of extreme engagement or reduce the dramatic window to maintain specificity on digital platforms. For producers, the trade-off between theater performance and OTT exposure is becoming increasingly complicated. 'Good Bad Ugly' heads to OTT sooner than expected In a surprising move, Ajith's 'Good Bad Ugly,' which had maintained a steady hold in cinemas, is set to release on OTT just four weeks after its theatrical debut. While such a quick transition is usually reserved for underperforming films, the decision reportedly comes from a streaming platform's aggressive content scheduling strategy. This highlights how platforms are no longer waiting for a theatrical run to end naturally; they're actively negotiating tighter windows to capitalize on early momentum—even at the cost of disrupting box office longevity. Pre-shoot deals set a new example In a groundbreaking development, Suriya's 46th film aka 'Suriya 46' allegedly sold its OTT rights before the shooting started. This indicates a shift where platform star power and directory are ready to place big bets on reliability. Such a pre-shoot deal provides financial security for producers, but this also means that OTT platforms gain more control over material planning and status from day one. This is a win for large names but can put pressure on small filmmakers to follow suit to take a similar advantage. "OTT platforms interfere with the script. More than production companies, OTT is putting heavy pressure on the makers", Pa Ranjith said during the 'Thangalaan' promotion. "I requested a July release, but they said they'd deduct ₹10 crore if we missed June 20, it all goes according to their will now," revealed 'Kuberaa' producer Suniel Narang , highlighting OTT pressure in his interview with Gulte. During the PTI interview, Arun Vijay said, "Films on OTT platforms within 21-30 days of the dramatic release have played an important role in reducing piracy." The theatrical-OTT equation is rapidly changing With each passing month, traditional dramatic-first models are developing. Whether it is strategically as 'Jana Nayagan' re-scheduled, 'Good Bad Ugly' swift transition, or advance sales, OTT platforms like 'Suriya 46', OTT platforms have now been integrated at every stage of the film's life cycle. As the lines are blurred, the question is no longer whether a film will stream, but when, how soon and on whose terms. Indian film stars' political ambitions can dim box office allure, experts warn

Film stars with political ambitions often leverage their popular on-screen personas to launch political careers. While this can provide a powerful launchpad, it often comes with the risk of diminishing their box-office appeal. The latest to face this conundrum are top southern movie stars Vijay, who launched a political party in February to contest next year's Tamil Nadu assembly polls, and Pawan Kalyan, who is serving as deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Their films are slated for release in the coming months, but trade experts warn of muted box-office performance, as they may no longer enjoy the universal appeal that transcended political ideologies. The past record of multiple actors-turned-politicians shows that a broad section of audiences begins to feel alienated, as film stars start catering to a target vote bank following their political plunge, experts said. Also read: Independent producers embrace regional cinema amid Bollywood uncertainties 'The theatrical draw of actors starts to wane once they get into politics as the persona is often diluted. When you're just a star, everyone is your market and audience, whereas a political name is often seen aligned with certain values and segments. A film star cuts across caste and creed whereas a politician has to appease their vote bank," independent exhibitor Vishek Chauhan said. While a cinematic superhero image can help actors get into politics, the two domains are hardly complimentary, Chauhan added. Vijay's next film Jana Nayagan is set for a Pongal 2026 release even as his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam makes its electoral debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, while Pawan Kalyan has titles like Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 and OG slated to arrive in theatres over the coming months. Actor Kamal Haasan, who has formed Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), a regional political party in Tamil Nadu, has seen recent titles like Indian 2 and Thug Life, which were also panned by critics, underperform at the box office, while up north, Kangana Ranaut, Lok Sabha member from the ruling BJP, has featured in titles such as Emergency, Tejas and Dhaakad that failed to draw crowds. Haasan is set to enter Rajya Sabha, backed by the DMK. To be sure, over the years, several actors including Andhra's NT Rama Rao, Tamil Nadu's MG Ramachandran, Chiranjeevi, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and others entered politics. Many of these made a foray later in their careers after having stopped actively taking up lead roles, some others such as Ranaut and Govinda have tried balancing the two jobs, without much success. 'Once actors turn politicians, their box office pull goes down. It gets even worse if they lose elections, but they certainly can't start from where they left," said Ruban Mathivanan of GK Cinemas in Chennai. Mathivanan added that other than just losing traction among audiences, actors-turned-political leaders often face hostility and bans in case the opposition parties come into power. Also read: Malayalam cinema thrives at box office as other regional films falter For instance, Tamil actor Vadivelu is said have faced an unofficial ban and dropped from several films after campaigning against then chief minister Jayalalithaa. Filmmakers and trade experts have long worried that when actors formally enter politics, especially by taking aggressive political stands, they risk alienating audiences with differing views, which can erode box office collections. In 2018, Rajinikanth's action drama Kaala had registered lacklustre opening collections after the actor caused a stir by describing anti-Sterlite protesters in Thoothukudi as 'anti-social elements". More recently, Thug Life did not release in Karnataka after Haasan's comments on the Kannada language drew backlash. Also read: The rise of small-town stories on OTT: A cost-effective, culturally rich trend A film producer said on the condition of anonymity that actors should realize they are seen as brands that all stakeholders in the value chain depend on. 'Apart from box office revenue, controversies and political entries can also result in OTT platforms turning wary of films featuring stars who could alienate audiences," the producer said.
