NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said 'India's space journey is not about racing others, it is about reaching higher together. Together, we share a common goal to explore space for the good of humanity'.Addressing the Global Conference on Space Exploration (GLEX 2025) via a video message, Modi urged for collective growth via space exploration. 'India's space vision is grounded in the ancient wisdom of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', that is, the world is one family. We strive not just for our own growth, but to enrich global knowledge, address common challenges, and inspire future generations,' he said.Modi said India is marching ahead with renewed confidence in the field of space exploration and its astronauts' footprints will be on the Moon. 'By 2035, the Bharatiya Antariksha Station will open new frontiers in research and global cooperation. By 2040, an India's footprints will be on the Moon. Mars and Venus are also on our radar,' he said.'Our first human space-flight mission, 'Gaganyaan', highlights our nation's rising aspirations,' Modi said referring to the mission planned for early 2027 launch. He said in the coming weeks, an Indian astronaut will travel to space as part of a joint Isro-Nasa mission to the International Space Station. The Axiom-4 mission is slated for launch in the first week of June and Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three others will undertake a 14-day sojourn to the orbital laboratory.He recalled that India's space journey started with the launch of a small rocket in 1963 and became the first nation to land near the South Pole of the Moon. 'Our journey has been remarkable. Our rockets carry more than payloads.They carry the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians. India's achievements are significant scientific milestones. Beyond that, they are proof that the human spirit can defy gravity,' Modi said.Calling India's space journey 'remarkable', he said, it reflects a 'declaration of curiosity, courage, and collective progress' rather than just a 'destination'.PM Modi listed space achievements like the successful Mars Mission Chandrayaan-1, Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, the launch of cryogenic engines, and satellite docking, calling them 'significant scientific milestones'. 'We continue to march ahead with renewed confidence, pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration,' he said.'We built cryogenic engines in a record time. We launched 100 satellites in a single mission. We have launched over 400 satellites for 34 nations on our launch vehicles. This year, we docked two satellites in space, a major step forward,' PM Modi said.

Mumbai Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad led a protest on Sunday (June 8, 2025) against handing over the Mother Dairy land parcel in Mumbai's Kurla to the Adani group for Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL). Many Congress leaders and party functionaries, including MLA Jyoti Gaikwad, Congress spokesperson Suresh Chandra Rajhans, and Mumbai General Secretary Mahendra Mungekar, along with their supporters and activists, staged the peaceful protest in Kurla. Ms. Gaikwad said, 'While we were peacefully protesting, once again the Modani (Modi and Adani) government had sent a large police force to suppress the voice of the people. What justice is it that the police stopped the peaceful protest with the force of police force? The government is providing security to thieves, but we will not be swayed by this oppression. We will continue to fight against this Adani government for the rights of Mumbai.' She called the transfer of land a part of a 'conspiracy' wherein the plan is to destroy the lives of lakhs of Dharavikars and acquire 600 acres of land in Dharavi, along with Kurla Mother Dairy, saltpans, and Deonar dumping ground land. She alleged government will also seize land parcels in Air India Colony, Bandra Reclamation, Behrampada, and Motilal Nagar without taking the locals into confidence.

#SelfieWithDaughter: 10 years of rural click that appealed to global audience
On June 9, 2015, the world witnessed the birth of the now-iconic hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter. What started as a local initiative in Bibipur village of Jind district of Haryana, soon managed to capture global attention. Aiming to promote gender equality, the campaign raises awareness about ills, including female foeticide. Now, 10 years later, more than 2 lakh social media posts and thousands of news articles now carry a phrase that didn't exist in headlines before 2015. The movement reshaped conversations on gender -- both online and offline, and resonated so strongly that Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised it in his Mann Ki Baat radio address in July 2015. PM Modi applauded Sunil Jaglan, a young sarpanch and the spirit behind #SelfieWithDaughter. During a conversation with HT, Jaglan said that #SelfieWithDaughter is no longer a campaign, but a social movement and a commitment by society. 'So far, we have taken some bold steps as a foundation for the campaign. We introduced 'Lado Panchayat'. The traditional khap panchayats were male-only councils, and for the first time, women were invited to the table, and the council came together to publicly condemn sex-selective abortion — a powerful shift in a deeply patriarchal setting. We also brought up 'women's happiness charts' to monitor the well-being of females in homes, and created 'Balika Sabha' (girls' assemblies) to give young girls a platform to speak, share and be heard,' he said. Under Sunil as sarpanch, a resolution was also passed to ban the use of abusive language against women that was known as 'Gali band ghar'. 'The campaign gained strong community support and had a significant positive impact — for the first time, such incidents were openly discussed in the gram sabha, and those who used abusive language were held accountable. Jaglan said that families have now started celebrating their daughters, sharing positive stories and images that brought a sense of unity and optimism in a time of crisis. 'Now people are taking this as a commitment and investing in health, education and financial independence of their daughters. Despite initiatives like #SelfieWithDaughter and 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' -- that also started from Haryana a decade ago -- the sex ratio at birth still remains a challenge in the state. The sex ratio at birth (SRB) is a critical indicator of gender equality. According to the figures from the Civil Registration System (CRS) up to December 2024, Haryana recorded its lowest sex ratio at birth in eight years in 2024 and registered a six-point drop from figures a year ago. The SRB dipped to 910 female births per 1,000 male births in 2024, a six-points drop from 916 in 2023 and the lowest after 2016, when it stood at 900. Government interventions have been undertaken largely—crackdowns on illegal sex determination clinics, strict enforcement of the PCPNDT Act, authorities have this year seized about 8,800 MTP kits and registered over 50 FIRs, including at least 18 against online sellers of the kits, but a lot still needs to be done. Vijender Singh, an assistant professor with the department of sociology, Kurukshetra University, believes that there has been a lot of awareness regarding equality in the society, but what lacks is enough incentivisation to classes other than lower strata. 'Government needs to expand its incentives in the middle and higher section of the society. These sections are aware with the issues and problems arising out of it, but shy away due to lack of incentives that are limited only to those below a certain income level,' he added.
