Gold Futures Settle Higher On Softer US Dollar, Easing Treasury Yields
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- The gold futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives settled higher on Wednesday, buoyed by a softer US dollar and easing United States (US) Treasury yields, said an analyst.
SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes told Bernama that the safe-haven metal gained after the US-Japan trade deal sparked a regional risk-on rally.
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump struck a trade deal with Japan, which included cutting US tariffs on the country to 15 per cent from 25 per cent.
Innes said gold prices were also influenced by growing concerns over Trump's public criticism of Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, as Trump pushed for interest rate cuts that could benefit the economy in the short term.
At the close, the spot-month July 2025 contract rose to US$3,442.2 per troy ounce from US$3,395.90 per troy ounce on Tuesday, the August 2025 contract increased to US$3,460.5 per troy ounce from US$3,414.20 yesterday, and the September 2025 contract climbed to US$3,466.4 per troy ounce from US$3,420.10.
The October 2025, December 2025, and February 2026 contracts also settled higher at US$3,495.6 per troy ounce from US$3,449.30 previously.
Trading volume declined to 30 lots from 52 lots, while open interest widened to 58 contracts from 28.
Physical gold was priced at US$3,409.85 per troy ounce based on the London Bullion Market Association's afternoon fix on July 22, 2025.

Penang still attracting foreign investors despite US tariff fears, says chief minister
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 7 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today said that the state continues to receive investment interest from the US, China, Singapore and other countries despite uncertainty over impending US tariffs. He said state agency InvestPenang has been kept busy managing inquiries from foreign investors looking into setting up plants here. 'Just this morning, I attended a coordination meeting to receive a big investment and even though this is still in the initial stage, all relevant agencies are working towards securing this investment,' he told reporters at his office in Komtar. He said the new 19 per cent tariff announced by Washington for Malaysia — which matches rates imposed on other Asean countries — places Malaysia back on a level playing field in the region. On reports that the US may impose a 100 per cent tariff on imported semiconductor chips, Chow said no official decision has been made yet. 'We will have to wait for the official announcement at the end of this month,' he said, adding that such speculation prolongs uncertainty and affects decision-making by multinationals. He said semiconductor exports from Malaysia to the US are currently exempt from the 19 per cent tariff set to take effect on August 8, and urged the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry to keep engaging with the US to maintain this exemption. Despite the uncertainties, Chow said Penang remains committed to developing its IC design ecosystem through initiatives such as Silicon Design @5km, the IC Design Park and the Penang Chip Design Academy. Between 2020 and the first quarter of 2025, Penang recorded RM191.4 billion in approved manufacturing investments, Chow said, with 79,498 jobs created during that period. The annual breakdown is RM14.1 billion (2020), RM76.2 billion (2021), RM13.7 billion (2022), RM63.4 billion (2023), RM17.3 billion (2024) and RM6.7 billion in Q1 2025.

MOHE Orders Two Polytechnics To Review Courses To Support Semiconductor Industry
GENERAL GEORGE TOWN, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has instructed Politeknik Balik Pulau in Penang and Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (previously known as Politeknik Kulim) in Kedah to review their course offerings to support the growing needs of the high-tech industry, particularly the rapidly expanding semiconductor sector. Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said both polytechnics are located near the nation's semiconductor hub. '…I've instructed the two polytechnics in the northern region to re-evaluate the courses they offer, so they can realign their programmes to meet the growing demand of this rapidly developing sector. 'We don't want to place the responsibility solely on universities. We also want to see changes in polytechnics and community colleges, especially those located within the relevant ecosystem,' he told reporters after opening the IEEE International Symposium on the Physical and Failure Analysis of Integrated Circuits (IPFA) 2025 at the Setia Spice Convention Centre in Bayan Lepas, today. He said the move aligns with the government's efforts to develop a comprehensive ecosystem that supports Malaysia's aspirations to become a leader in the semiconductor sector, including chip design and manufacturing, ultimately ensuring the country remains competitive in the global technology landscape. Zambry also emphasised the importance of building a comprehensive education ecosystem while strengthening collaborative networks between universities and industry through long-term strategic approaches, particularly in the fields of engineering and semiconductors. He said universities such as Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis play a leading role in these fields. 'We also have five universities under the Malaysia Technical University Network (MTUN) that specialise in high-level technical fields including engineering, semiconductors, IT, and AI,' he added. Zambry also commended USM for successfully developing its chip through collaborations with various industry partners, adding that the achievement reflects the capability of the country's higher education institutions in participating not only in the back-end aspects of the semiconductor industry but also in the front-end in chip design and manufacturing.
