Former presidents, VPs expected at Prabowo's state addresses
JAKARTA: (Bernama-Antara) The government has invited all living former presidents and vice presidents of Indonesia to attend President Prabowo Subianto's annual state addresses at the Parliamentary Complex on Friday (Aug 15), the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) announced.
"Regarding the list of figures expected to attend the president's speeches tomorrow, we can confirm that all presidents and vice presidents who have served Indonesia have been invited," PCO Head Hasan Nasbi told the press in Jakarta on Thursday, reported Antara news agency.
This means the government is expecting the attendance of Fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri, Sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and Seventh President Joko Widodo.
Among the past vice presidents anticipated to join are Sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno, Tenth and Twelfth Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Eleventh Vice President Boediono, and Thirteenth Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.
"We hope tomorrow's event will be a moment to reinforce national unity and harmony, as well as bring together elite politicians. Therefore, we expect all former presidents and vice presidents to attend the state addresses," he said.
He noted that President Prabowo is scheduled to deliver two state addresses at the Parliamentary Complex starting at 9 am local time. The first, before the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), will outline the government's performance in its first 300 days in office.
The second, during a plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) at 2:30 pm, will present the 2026 Draft State Budget (RAPBN).
Nasbi then highlighted a letter issued by State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi on August 12, which encourages all government institutions, companies, and residents to follow the two addresses live through various available channels. - Bernama-Antara

Prabowo govt intends to go after illegal mines
THE nation will move to 'rectify' illegal mines estimated to have caused US$19bil (RM80bil) in state losses, President Prabowo Subianto said in his first State of the Nation address. The government has identified 1,063 illegal mining sites and is seeking support to crack down on them, Prabowo said in the annual speech in Jakarta on Friday. The illicit mines may be causing 300 trillion rupiah (RM78bil) in losses to the state, he said, without specifying over what time period. Illegal and poorly-regulated mining is a major problem in South-East Asia's largest economy, causing disproportionate environmental damage and depriving the government of tax revenue. However, any crackdown could impact the supply of major export commodities like coal, nickel and tin. A push against illegal mining would follow the seizure of 3.1 million hectares of palm oil plantations that the government says have violated regulations. Prabowo has gotten tough on the sector, with his attorney general's office launching a legal case against major producer Wilmar International Ltd. Since coming to power in October, Prabowo has targeted the country's vast commodity sector more aggressively than his predecessor. Alongside the Wilmar probe, the attorney general's office is investigating corruption at state oil firm, PT Pertamina. The Ministry of Environment also plans to punish companies in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park – a major nickel smelting centre – for environmental breaches. — Bloomberg

Prabowo touts economy and social welfare drive
Parliament speech: Prabowo delivering his State of the Nation Address ahead of Indonesia's independence day in Jakarta. — Reuters JAKARTA: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto emphasised an expectation-defying economy, low unemployment rate and slew of ambitious social welfare initiatives as he delivered his first state address to parliament. The ex-special forces commander took office in October after a campaign to rehabilitate an image tainted by allegations of rights abuses committed during the Suharto dictatorship in the late 1990s. The 73-year-old populist leader has pledged fast, state-driven growth to transform South-East Asia's largest country into a major global powerhouse. But his hallmark schemes, including a free school meal programme to address childhood stunting, have strained state coffers, stoked investor fears and triggered student protests. In his speech, Prabowo defended his social policies and pointed to positive second-quarter economic results after his government set an ambitious goal of eight per cent growth. 'Amid political conflict, global economic conflict, (and the US) trade war ... Indonesia still managed to grow above five per cent,' he told parliament yesterday. After US President Donald Trump threatened Indonesia with a heavy tariff rate of 32% in April, Prabowo negotiated a lower levy of 19% in return for bringing down trade barriers for American goods. Last week, the statistics agency showed 2Q growth had accelerated to 5.12%, beating forecasts and up from 4.87% the previous quarter. He also pointed to the unemployment rate, which has dropped to its lowest since the Asian financial crisis. On his social welfare agenda, Prabowo shrugged off criticism of the billion-dollar free lunch programme for schoolchildren and pregnant mothers, touting its reach of 20 million people. 'Our goal ... is to be free from poverty, free from hunger, free from suffering,' he added. He faced protests across Indonesia in February for widespread cuts to fund the scheme – which has been dogged by reported delays and food poisonings – as well as a new sovereign wealth fund. Prabowo succeeded the popular Joko Widodo last year in a third attempt at the presidency after a campaign in which he pledged policy continuity.
