The Amateur movie review: Rami Malek seeks revenge in subpar spy thriller

2/5 stars

Rami Malek shone in Mr. Robot, his breakout TV drama about cybersecurity and hackers, and it seems that ever since, he has been seeking something similar.
James Bond movie
No Time to Die , in which he played the villain, was very much a case of the spy who bored me. And now The Amateur, adapted from a novel by Robert Littell, crosses the same terrain.
Malek plays Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer working at Langley, Virginia. When his wife (Rachel Brosnahan) is murdered in a terrorist attack in London, the distraught Charlie has only one thing on his mind: revenge.
Confronting his bosses, he demands mission-specific training. To shut him up, they agree, putting him with Laurence Fishburne's Colonel Henderson, who soon realises that Charlie does not have the mettle to be a cold-blooded killer.

Undeterred, Charlie sets about using the skills he does have, tracking down the four people involved in Sarah's death, starting in Paris. It is almost like watching the polar opposite of Liam Neeson's Taken character chase down the bad guys.

Former CIA director William Burns' ‘riveting' memoir to be published by Random House

Former CIA director and Biden cabinet official William Burns is working on a book about his years leading the intelligence agency. Advertisement Random House announced on June 3 that it would publish Burns' Diplomat Spy: A Memoir of Espionage in Revolutionary Times. The release date is still to be determined. 'It was a profound honour to lead the men and women of CIA, and I hope in this new book to illuminate their remarkable service, and the crucial connection in this revolutionary new era between spycraft and statecraft,' said Burns, who headed the CIA from 2021-23 and was elevated by the then US president, Joe Biden , to a cabinet position. A veteran diplomat, he was a key adviser to Biden on Russia, Ukraine and other parts of the world. Style Edit: The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, as seen on Daniel Craig at the Paris Olympics – James Bond's favourite watch gets new models in titanium, bronze gold and stainless steel

Few dive watches are as embedded in pop culture as the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M. First made famous in 1993, when it appeared on Pierce Brosnan 's wrist during his turn as James Bond, the watch has seen updates over the decades – and as Daniel Craig succeeded Brosnan as 007. Throughout, it has stayed true to its identity: wave-patterned dial, skeletonised hands, distinct bezel and numerals, time-only design to preserve symmetry and a helium escape valve at 10 o'clock. The full release of the stainless steel models now includes one with a black aluminium bezel and dial, alongside another with a grade 5 titanium bezel and brushed PVD stainless steel dial. Both are available on mesh bracelets or rubber straps. Advertisement Omega hasn't stopped there. Taking inspiration from the Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition worn in Craig's last turn as Bond – No Time to Die – the brand released two more versions using their unique bronze gold alloy, evoking the patina and tropical accents of that earlier version. The alloy resists corrosion and verdigris oxidation – a kind of greening that is common with bronze, as seen on large sculptures like the Statue of Liberty. Instead, the bronze gold present in the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M references from this release patinates gracefully, beautifully and uniquely to the wearer. Both bronze gold versions come with striking dial and bezel colours, and house the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8806 within the 42mm case with its domed sapphire crystal and oxalic anodised aluminium bezel ring. For those looking for more bronze gold, look to the burgundy bezel with black dial. The matt black tone of the dial comes from sandblasted aluminium, and is accented with PVD 18k bronze gold hands and blackened indexes. The addition of titanium – a material often used in aircraft and spacecraft – allows the watch to withstand extreme temperatures.

The Amateur star Laurence Fishburne on 9 of his key roles, from The Matrix to John Wick 2

If the filmmaking duo known as Daniels had not named their Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, it would have been the perfect title for a tribute to Laurence Fishburne. Advertisement Since his breakthrough as the energetic Mr Clean in 1979's Apocalypse Now, the actor has been a ubiquitous presence in Hollywood and beyond, shifting seamlessly from hit franchises including The Matrix and John Wick to groundbreaking films such as Boyz N the Hood, television shows like black-ish and the recent Broadway revival of David Mamet's American Buffalo. He also writes and directs, and has been recruited to lend his distinctive voice to animations, video games and podcasts. The latest is 20th Century Studios' action-espionage drama The Amateur, starring Rami Malek as Charlie Heller, a talented CIA analyst who undertakes a mission of vengeance after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Fishburne is Henderson, a retired colonel specialising in training field agents, who comes into Heller's orbit.
