The Amateur star Laurence Fishburne on 9 of his key roles, from The Matrix to John Wick 2

If the filmmaking duo known as Daniels had not named their Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, it would have been the perfect title for a tribute to Laurence Fishburne.

Since his breakthrough as the energetic Mr Clean in 1979's Apocalypse Now, the actor has been a ubiquitous presence in Hollywood and beyond, shifting seamlessly from hit franchises including The Matrix and John Wick to groundbreaking films such as Boyz N the Hood, television shows like black-ish and the recent Broadway revival of David Mamet's American Buffalo.
He also writes and directs, and has been recruited to lend his distinctive voice to animations, video games and podcasts.
The latest is 20th Century Studios'
action-espionage drama The Amateur, starring Rami Malek as Charlie Heller, a talented CIA analyst who undertakes a mission of vengeance after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack.
Fishburne is Henderson, a retired colonel specialising in training field agents, who comes into Heller's orbit.

And although Fishburne is in only a handful of scenes, his formidable presence adds gravitas to the entire film.

Why go to the cinema? ‘Shared reality' experience makes viewers feel they're in the movie

In a Los Angeles cinema, a trench-coat-wearing Neo bends backwards to dodge bullets that spiral over the viewer's head, as the sound of gunfire erupts from everywhere. This new immersive experience is designed to be a red-pill moment that will get film fans off their sofas at a time when the movie industry is desperate to bring back audiences. Cosm, which has venues in Los Angeles and Dallas in the United States, is launching its dome-style screen and 3D sets in June with a 'shared reality' version of The Matrix , the cult 1999 film starring Keanu Reeves as a man who suddenly learns his world is a fiction. 'We believe the future will be more immersive and more experiential,' said Cosm president Jeb Terry at a recent preview screening. Former CIA director William Burns' ‘riveting' memoir to be published by Random House

Former CIA director and Biden cabinet official William Burns is working on a book about his years leading the intelligence agency. Advertisement Random House announced on June 3 that it would publish Burns' Diplomat Spy: A Memoir of Espionage in Revolutionary Times. The release date is still to be determined. 'It was a profound honour to lead the men and women of CIA, and I hope in this new book to illuminate their remarkable service, and the crucial connection in this revolutionary new era between spycraft and statecraft,' said Burns, who headed the CIA from 2021-23 and was elevated by the then US president, Joe Biden , to a cabinet position. A veteran diplomat, he was a key adviser to Biden on Russia, Ukraine and other parts of the world. 15 of the best female assassin movies as Ballerina, the new John Wick spin-off, releases

This week sees the cinema release of Ballerina, the first in a series of planned spin-off movies from the incredibly successful John Wick action franchise. Focusing on a new character, Eve, portrayed by Ana de Armas No Time to Die ), the film follows the exploits of a young orphan who is recruited into the secret Ruska Roma organisation, where she is raised as a deadly assassin. Once unleashed into the world, however, Eve applies her new skill set to track down the gangsters responsible for murdering her father. Adopting a more grounded approach than the operatic staging of its predecessors, Ballerina only truly comes to life during its elaborate action set pieces, many of which were apparently overseen by John Wick series director Chad Stahelski during substantial reshoots. Play The inclusion of Keanu Reeves' eponymous anti-hero also betrays a lack of confidence that Ballerina can attract an audience solely on its own merits – something Donnie Yen Ji-dan might want to consider as he embarks on his own John Wick spin-off, based on his character from John Wick: Chapter 4 While not the best example of its genre, Ballerina nevertheless continues a long-standing tradition of female assassin films that stretches back decades.
