Porsche plans more cost cuts to counter tariffs, China slump
The manufacturer will start negotiations on additional reductions in the second half of this year, chief executive officer Oliver Blume wrote in a memo to employees seen by Bloomberg. Management is following through on its pledge to find more savings after taking steps to reduce headcount earlier this year.
'Our business model, which has served us well for many decades, no longer works in its current form,' Blume said in the memo.
Porsche is grappling with lower-than-expected demand for EVs and weak luxury sales in China, where the market for battery-powered cars is fiercely competitive. In the US, Porsche's single biggest market where it relies solely on imports, President Donald Trump's trade moves are weighing on margins.
'All of this is hitting us hard – harder than many other car manufacturers,' Blume said. Porsche earlier this month warned of a tough road ahead for sales this year, after a slowdown in the US and its persistent weakness in China.
The additional cuts, to be hammered out with labour leaders, are meant to bolster Porsche's profitability in the coming years. The company targets an operating margin of 15 per cent to 17 per cent in the medium term, from 8.6 per cent in the first quarter.
The 911 maker is following parent Volkswagen's lead in trying to whittle down its production costs in Germany, where labour and energy are expensive. Volkswagen clinched its own deal with unions late last year to slash production capacity and reduce headcount by 35,000 employees over the next five years. BLOOMBERG

Hong Kong resumes currency intervention spree amid low rates
[HONG KONG] Hong Kong's brief pause from defending its beleaguered currency proved to be short lived, as the authorities were forced to buy local dollars for the third time in a week amid stock outflows and low local rates. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), the city's de-facto central bank, bought HK$6.429 billion (S$1.1 billion) of the local currency on Tuesday (Aug 5), in addition to its purchases on Aug 1 and Jul 30. That is after being absent from the market for two weeks. The resumption of currency intervention underscores the persistent pressure on the Hong Kong dollar as the city's low rates keep the yield gap with the US wide, spurring traders to short the local currency in favour of the higher-yielding greenback. Moreover, Chinese investors net sold the most amount of the city's shares since May 12 on Monday, as per Bloomberg calculations, adding to headwinds for the local currency. 'Southbound equity outflows and an abating of seasonal demand may have left the selling Hong Kong dollar pressure dominant,' said Carie Li, global market strategist at DBS Bank. 'The wide yield differential will keep carry trades active, so more intervention is likely to come ahead.' The HKMA has been intervening to cap the local dollar's losses since June as it deals with the repercussions of efforts earlier this year to restrain the currency's strength. Its earlier sales of the Hong Kong dollar caused local rates to tumble versus those in the US, heaping pressure on the currency. The monetary authority withdrew a total of HK$13.89 billion of liquidity from the market in a week via its purchases of the local currency, according to Bloomberg calculations, to keep it boxed in a 7.75-to-7.85 per US dollar range. The one-month Hong Kong Interbank Offered Rate has risen from a three-year low touched in June to nearly 1 per cent as of Monday, but it is still down from more than 4 per cent level seen in April. HKMA may not have been the sole monetary authority in Asia defending its currency on Tuesday. Rupee purchases by Indian state banks were also suggestive of central bank intervention, as the currency hovered near a record low after US President Donald Trump threatened to ramp up tariffs on the nation. For Hong Kong's authorities, the battle against depreciation is expected to be a prolonged one, as withdrawing cash too quickly would send local rates surging and hurt the already frail economy. However, rising expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts following last week's shocking US jobs data could provide some relief for the HKMA if the rate gap between the two economies narrows. 'The buying of USD/HKD is probably driven by the ongoing carry trade, which might not last long if markets were to price in more US rate cut following the the soft US job market last week,' said Wee Khoon Chong, senior APAC market strategist at BNY in Hong Kong. Asia: Markets track Wall Street rally on Fed rate cut bets
[HONG KONG] Stock markets rose on Tuesday as investors grow increasingly confident the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month, despite concerns about the US economy and Donald Trump's tariffs. The gains tracked a rally on Wall Street, where traders rediscovered their mojo following Friday's sell-off that was fuelled by news that fewer-than-expected American jobs were created in July, while the previous two months' figures were revised down sharply. The reading raised concerns the world's biggest economy was in worse shape than expected, though it also fanned bets the Fed will slash in September, with markets pricing the chance of a 25-basis-point reduction at about 95 per cent, according to Bloomberg. There is also talk that bank officials could go for twice as much as that. 'The narrative flipped fast: soft jobs equals soft Fed, and soft Fed equals risk-on,' said Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management. But he warned that 'if cuts are coming because the labour market is slipping from 'cooling' to 'cracking', then we're skating closer to the edge than we care to admit'. However, while there is a broad expectation that the Fed will cut rates, Lazard chief market strategist Ronald Temple remained sceptical. 'I continue to believe the Fed will not reduce rates at all this year given rising inflation caused by tariffs and a relatively stable unemployment rate,' he wrote. 'I would align with the majority of the FOMC members who believe it is more appropriate to hold policy constant until there is greater clarity in terms of the effects of tariffs and stricter immigration enforcement on inflation and employment.' Traders were keeping an eye on trade talks between Washington and dozens of its trade partners after Trump imposed tariffs of between 10 and 41 per cent on them. Claire's skips rent payments, moving closer to bankruptcy filing
[NEW YORK] Claire's Stores is inching closer to filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as the teen accessory chain elected to miss June and July rent payments on some stores, according to sources familiar with the matter. The firm may seek protection as soon as this week, but doing so could take longer as the retailer finalises details of the filing, said the sources, who asked not to be identified discussing a private matter. Claire's has been exploring restructuring options, including a possible sale, amid weakened cash flow and a heavy debt burden. Earlier this year, it chose to conserve cash by deferring debt interest payments, Bloomberg reported at the time. The retailer has struggled since a 2018 bankruptcy handed control to creditors including Elliott Management and Monarch Alternative Capital. Representatives for Claire's and Monarch did not respond to requests seeking comment. Elliott and Claire's adviser Houlihan Lokey declined to comment. Uncertainty about US tariff policy has raised questions about Claire's ability to address a nearly $500 million loan due in December 2026.
