The chances of an asteroid hitting Earth in 2032 have changed. But what's the risk, really?
At the end of 2024, a NASA-funded telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile, first spotted 2024 YR4 and a month later scientists concluded there was a more than 1% chance the asteroid would crash into Earth in December 2032.
When scientists first reported their findings in January, they expected the asteroid's future trajectory and impact probability to change as observational data was collected and analyzed. That's exactly what happened.
On Tuesday, astronomers reported that 2024 YR4's probability of colliding with Earth increased to approximately 3%, which is unusual for a small asteroid that is only 130 to 300 feet wide. By Wednesday, that impact assessment dropped to 1.5%.
"But the impact probability remains small, so people should not really be too concerned about that," said Davide Farnocchia, a navigation engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Center for Near Earth Object Studies.
Yes, there are scientific reasons why the impact probability change can increase suddenly. But the probability can also drop suddenly.
Initially you might have a small probability of impact because "you cannot rule out the possible collision with Earth, [but] at some point the probability will go to zero," Farnocchia said.
When an asteroid is identified, scientists cannot pinpoint its exact future location, but instead can gather data to predict its location within a range. If that range overlaps with Earth, that's when there's a chance of collision, reported NASA Spaceflight.
With more observational data, astronomer's predictions of the asteroid's trajectory and future location become more precise.
The current range for the trajectory of 2024 YR4 — based on hundreds of collected observations — is still being assessed, so the range is large and currently overlaps with Earth. That's why we're seeing an increased percentage of possible impact.
As astronomers continue to collect data, the range could shrink so much that it no longer overlaps with Earth, and the chances of 2024 YR4 hitting our planet will become zero.
The current trajectory of 2024 YR4 is almost a straight line away from Earth, and astronomers will continue to collect observational data until it is out of sight. They have until early April to track the asteroid's possible collision course and future location.

In the unlikely event that the asteroid's trajectory connects with Earth, its point of impact would be somewhere along a 'risk corridor' that extends across the eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, the Arabian Sea and South Asia, according to the International Asteroid Warning Network.

According to NASA officials, at the time of its initial sighting, Apophis was one of the most hazardous asteroids in the sky, with the threat of barreling toward Earth in 2029.
During early assessments of impact risk, Apophis reached a rating of Torino Scale 4, which is a scale for categorizing potential Earth impact events.
The 0-to-10 scale ranges from no hazard (Torino Scale 0), to normal (Torino Scale 1), to meriting attention by astronomers (Torino Scale 2 through 4), threatening (Torino Scale 5 through 7) to a certain collision (Torino Scale 8 through 10).
Upon gathering further observational data and assessment, scientists ruled out the impact probability for Apophis, for now, with a small chance of impact in 2068 declared unlikely.
As for 2024 YR4, it's currently categorized as a Torino 3.
It is uncommon for an asteroid to be rated at Torino Scale 3, because that categorization only happens for asteroids that are larger than 65 feet with an impact probability of 1% or greater.
Even if this asteroid hits Earth, it could burn up in the atmosphere and become a much smaller meteorite before it lands.
Slightly larger asteroids may make it through the atmosphere but often crash at locations that cause minimal or no immediate damage, according to the United States Geological Survey. Many meteorites end up in the ocean or in open areas.

Perseid meteor shower: When it peaks and what could spoil the party
When it comes to meteor showers, the Perseids pop. It's not just about the quantity of meteors (as many as 100 per hour) and their showy quality (fireballs!) but also their superb timing. The annual shower hits its peak on warm, laid-back August nights as the Earth crosses paths with the dust cloud left by comet Swift-Tuttle on its every-133-years swing past our planet. Watching the shower can be an awesome experience as meteors streak past in the summertime heavens, leaving light and color in their wake. John Denver, 27 and on a camping trip amid the Colorado pines, was so moved after seeing the Perseids rain fire in the sky that he wrote 'Rocky Mountain High.' That said, this year there's a caveat. The meteor shower is set to peak the night of Aug. 11 and 12, according to Ed Krupp, director of L.A.'s Griffith Observatory. NASA says the best viewing time is in the predawn hours. But the moon will get in the way. 'The waning gibbous moon will severely compromise this shower at the time of maximum activity,' notes the American Meteor Society. The moon will be about 92% full and in the sky much of the time as the shower hits its peak, Krupp said. 'Fainter meteors will be lost in the moon's glow,' he told The Times. 'At its best, the Perseid shower delivers between 50 to 100 meteors per hour, but this year far fewer will be seen.' Stargazers can cross their fingers for more fireballs, a phenomenon that the Perseid shower is known for, according to NASA. 'Fireballs are larger explosions of light and color that can persist longer than an average meteor streak,' NASA says. 'This is due to the fact that fireballs originate from larger particles of cometary material.' Krupp advises that those who are 'committed to the Perseids' despite the diminished chances of visibility this year 'should go somewhere far from any urban center and away from the scattered glare of artificial lighting.' Experts advise booking campsites in Joshua Tree, the Mojave Desert and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. There are multiple other good spots. Once there, aim for an expansive view because, although the Perseids seem to radiate from the northern constellation Perseus, they can appear anywhere, Bill Cooke, a NASA meteor scientist, told The Times in 2024. 'So get on a cot or on a sleeping bag,' he said, 'and lie flat on your back and look straight up.' Good news for 2026: The forecast for the Perseid meteor shower is excellent. The moon will be dark, and as NPR reports, an unusually large number of meteors are expected to flash through the night sky.

Space Force to launch eighth X-37B spaceplane flight next month
The Space Force's X-37B spaceplane will take off on its eighth mission next month, this time with experiments focused on space-based communications and quantum sensing. 'These experiments come as part of a broader push across the U.S. Space Force to uphold the safety and security of the space domain by enhancing the resilience and flexibility of U.S. orbital systems,' the service said in a statement Monday announcing the launch. The spacecraft, built by Boeing, has served as a testbed for the Defense Department and NASA since its first flight in 2010. While not an operational spacecraft, the mini space shuttle is used to fly experiments and test maneuvers and operational concepts in orbit. Much of that work has been classified, but the Space Force in recent years has offered more insight into the platform's missions. Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman discussed the forthcoming mission, which will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, in a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter. 'It's about making our joint force more connected, more resilient and ready to operate in the face of any challenge,' Saltzman said. 'That's how America's Space Force secures our nation's interests in, from and to space.' For the communications experiment, the service will coordinate with commercial satellite networks in low Earth orbit, about 1,200 miles above the Earth's surface, to demonstrate laser communications — a technology that enables larger amounts of data to be transmitted more securely than traditional radio frequencies. 'The use of proliferated relay networks enhances the resilience of U.S. space architectures by ensuring that they contain no single point of failure,' the Space Force said. The quantum sensing demonstration will feature the highest performing quantum inertial sensor that's ever been used in space, according to the service. The sensor is designed to support navigation in orbit without GPS or other satellite networks. 'This technology is useful for navigation in GPS-denied environments and consequently will enhance the navigational resilience of U.S. spacecraft in the face of current and emerging threats,' the service said. 'As quantum inertial sensors would be useful for navigation in cislunar space, they additionally promise to push the technological frontiers of long-distance space travel and exploration.' The Fifth Space Operations Squadron at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, DC, conducts X-37B operations and experiments in partnership with the Space Rapid Capabilities Office. The service didn't describe the length of the mission or list any other experiments. It's last X-37B flight flew for 434 days, returning in March of this year. Among that mission's milestones was the demonstration of a series of aerobraking maneuvers that allowed the space vehicle to change orbits using minimal fuel.
