Spain holiday horror as Irish tourists battered by gang in late-night ambush
They were assaulted as they walked back to their hotel in the picturesque town of Nerja around 30 miles east of Malaga after a boozy night out.
Police are understood to have identified the suspects as four local youngsters believed to include a minor. It was not immediately clear this morning if the Civil Guard has made any arrests. The mugging happened in the early hours of Friday morning.
Respected local paper Sur said the culprits threatened their victims with a knife before repeatedly punching and kicking them and fleeing with stolen cash and mobile phones.
It described the attack as so "violent" remains of blood were left spattered on a residential property by where the mugging took place.
Police were alerted by local residents who heard screams and shouting.
The Irish holidaymakers, who were said to have been unable to defend themselves properly from the blows they received because they were drunk, reportedly each suffered several facial fractures among other injuries.
They were taken to a nearby health centre and are thought to have been transferred afterwards to hospital. The Civil Guard in Malaga has not yet made any official comment about the incident.
Nerja is the easternmost town on the Costa del Sol and is known for its beautiful beaches and its caves stretching for almost five kilometres which are one of Spain's major tourist attractions.
In September last year a 29-year-old Irish holidaymaker ended up in a specialist hospital burns unit after a freak accident at a friend's wedding in the resort.
She was seriously injured after being engulfed in flames when her dress caught fire on decorative candles as she was in the bathroom. Fellow guests dialled 999 after finding her semi-conscious at a holiday rental apartment.
She was initially taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Malaga where she is understood to have undergone an emergency operation before being transferred to a burns unit at Seville's Virgen del Rocio University Hospital.

Police dismantle gang smuggling marijuana to Ireland in farm feed
Spanish police, in collaboration with An Garda Síochána and police in the UK, have dismantled a criminal gang suspected of smuggling marijuana hidden inside sacks of animal feed sent to Ireland. The investigation began in January 2025 after authorities identified a group involving Irish, British and Spanish nationals using international freight companies to ship pallets of animal feed with concealed marijuana buds to Ireland, Spain's National Police said in a statement. The statement said 12 searches were carried out in Madrid, Malaga and Seville. Nearly €100,000 in cash was seized, along with 630 marijuana plants, a firearm and three detonators, high-end vehicles, luxury watches, electronic devices and items relating to criminal activity. At the same time as the searches, property and financial assets worth more than €2 million were blocked. Officials estimate the group trafficked more than three tonnes of marijuana since 2019, maintaining steady monthly shipments. Several shipments were intercepted in Spain and Ireland during the probe, with about 300 kilos of marijuana seized. One person in Ireland was arrested after gardaí searched a house in Co Louth. Thirteen people in Spain were also arrested. The operation was carried out with support from gardaí and Britain's national crime agency. Spain is a major gateway for drug trafficking into Europe due to its proximity to Morocco - a leading cannabis producer - and its historical ties to Latin America.

Top BBC presenter accused of showing 'penis picture' to junior staff member
The BBC has reportedly been hit with another scandal, after a top female presenter is alleged to have shown a 'penis picture' to a junior member of staff - leaving them in tears. The star is alleged to have revealed an image of a man's penis on her phone during a casual conversation where she asked the producer if she "liked d*** pics". Insiders claim the star, who is listed among the BBC's 50 highest-paid employees, asked the young staff member an inappropriate question before showing her the picture, reports The Mirror. The young producer was said to have been "horrified and in tears" over the encounter. It is unknown whose private parts were in the picture. Bosses were alerted about the encounter, and the presenter was brought into a private meeting where she was told to apologise for her actions. The crisis has been described as a "ticking time bomb" by staff at the BBC, fearing there could be a widespread fallout if the presenter's identity became public. A source claimed to The Sun: "This incident goes beyond ordinary workplace banter. The staff member felt intimidated and upset, believing the act was meant to shock under the guise of a joke. "There's a sense that if this had involved a male presenter, the repercussions would have been immediate and severe. The fact that it's a woman at the centre of this makes the situation even more striking." The insider claimed the conversation was meant 'to be jokey, locker-room type banter' but it resulted in the young producer crying about it. A BBC spokesperson said: "While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously." The BBC has been hit with a number of scandals in the last year, with the axing of a number of Strictly Come Dancing stars over their behaviour, as well as Gregg Wallace and John Torode being fired from MasterChef in recent weeks. The BBC also came under fire for its coverage of the Glastonbury Festival. This year, Welsh presenter Wynne Evans was axed from his radio job at the BBC over allegations about his conduct. The One Show host Jermaine Jenas was also sacked by the corporation for sending inappropriate messages to two female colleagues. Meanwhile, Huw Edwards pleaded guilty to having indecent images of children and was spared jail when he admitted three charges of 'making' indecent photographs after he was sent 41 illegal images by a convicted paedophile over WhatsApp. The former BBC presenter was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 24 months. Suffolk County Police Department have claimed Martha's body 'did not show evidence of violence.' However, the mystery about her sudden passing remains as a police spokesperson said a preliminary examination of Nolan-O'Slattara's remains was 'inconclusive' and that a cause of death is 'pending further examination.' Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office and East Hampton Town Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, saying that they responded to reports of an 'unconscious woman' at around midnight local time (5am Irish time). People attempted to perform CPR on Ms Nolan O'Slattara, but she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. 'East Hampton Town Police responded to a 911 call from a man reporting a woman unconscious on a boat docked at the Montauk Yacht Club, on Star Island Road, at approximately 12 a.m. Good Samaritans attempted to perform CPR on the woman,' a statement from police said. 'Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra, 33, of Manhattan, was pronounced dead on the boat by First Responders. The preliminary investigation and exam were inconclusive regarding the cause of death, which will be determined by an autopsy conducted by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office.'
