Lady Indians head to Arizona for Nationals round two
The 33-19 Lady Indians have punched their ticket back to the NJCAA National Tournament for the first time since 2021 and have hit the second-round.
The team is led by standout sophomore pitcher Anyela Gomez, who boasts 11 home runs and 53 RBIs this season.
With prior experience at the NJCAA World Series, Head Coach Kelly Brookins emphasized the importance of staying focused and controlling the controllable.
'It's more of a mindset than physical ability,' Brookins said. 'It's about keeping yourself in the moment—not looking ahead or dwelling on the past play. You can't assume anything. Any team can beat you at any given moment.'
Coach Brookins also highlighted the excitement surrounding the team's journey, especially for players experiencing cross-country travel and national competition for the first time.
'I'm just excited for the moment,' Brookins said. 'We've put in the work, and they are enough to experience this opportunity. It's about taking it all in and enjoying the moment.'
The Lady Indians will depart for Phoenix Friday, with their matchup scheduled for Monday, May 19.

The Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. hits 100th homer, joining some select company in MLB history
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. knew the ball was gone the moment it left his bat. Only later did the young Kansas City Royals star realize what kind of company it allowed him to join. The two-run shot in the eighth inning against Texas on Tuesday night merely padded the lead for Kansas City, which went on to a 5-2 victory. It was the fifth straight win for the Royals, who closed to within 2 1/2 games of an AL wild-card berth. But it also was the 100th career homer for Witt, making him the youngest in franchise history to reach that mark. He made it at the age of 26 years, 66 days, or more than a year earlier than Carlos Beltran when he accomplished it during the 2003 season. 'I want him up there every inning,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I mean, you look at the lineup and you're trying to figure out, 'How many times can we get to the plate? How many guys can we keep on base for him when he does come to the plate?' 'I mean, that's an immense amount of pressure on a younger player to understand that's how everybody feels about him," Quatraro said. "But he has the physical ability, the makeup and the mental capacity to handle it.' The latest no-doubt shot, which came off Texas reliever Cole Winn and landed an estimated 449 feet to dead center field, made Witt only the fourth player with at least 100 homers and 100 stolen bases through his first four big league seasons. The others are Julio Rodríguez, Darryl Strawberry and Bobby Bonds — some pretty select company. Witt also become one of six shortstops in the last 95 years to hit at least 100 homers through his age-25 seasons. That list of luminaries includes Alex Rodriguez, Cal Ripken Jr., Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa and Hanley Ramirez; of those players, only Rodriguez and Ramirez also had 100 steals by the time they were 25 years old. 'It was special,' Witt admitted, 'just seeing the kind of names on the list or whatever they showed. But now, it's just kind of on to the next. It was special. We enjoy it. And now it's just onto the next game.' They keep getting more important for the Royals, who have won five straight and seven of their last eight. They head into the third-game of their four-game set against the Rangers on Wednesday night with a chance to inch closer to a wild-card spot, and they proved last year that they could do some postseason damage if they can only get in. Witt continues to be the catalyst of their second-half surge, too. He's hitting .291 with 18 homers and 69 RBIs. 'It's special when he goes out there,' said the Royals' Seth Lugo, who allowed just two runs on three hits while pitching into the seventh inning Tuesday night. 'I've been saying it for two years: He goes about his business the same way. He doesn't get up or down on himself. He's a master of consistency. That's what he does.' Witt also happens to be a slick fielder with a Gold Glove in his trophy case. But at the plate is where Witt has become a bona fide star. He led the majors with a .332 average last year, when he hit 32 home runs, stole 31 bases and finished with 109 RBIs. And while he may not quite replicate the average, homer total or RBI numbers in this campaign, he already has 32 stolen bases while getting caught just seven times. 'There's not too many guys that get to 100 (homers),' said Vinnie Pasquantino, who also homered Tuesday night. "And the fourth player in MLB history with 100 stolen bases? It's not a list I'll ever be on. I mean, it's kind of unbelievable. 'He's one of the best players in the league for a reason," Pasquantino said. 'A superstar.'

Realmuto, Schwarber and Stott homers power Phillies to a 6-4 win over Mariners
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night. Realmuto's homer was a no-doubt blast to left field on a first-pitch sinker from Seattle reliever Matt Brash (1-2). Realmuto, who hit his ninth homer, reached base three times and had three RBIs. He also had an RBI single and reached on a catcher's interference call on Mariners backstop Mitch Garver. It was the third time in a month the Phillies were on the positive side of a catcher's interference call. Schwarber opened the scoring in the first inning with his 44th homer. He leads the NL in homers and the majors with 104 RBIs. Stott hit his eighth homer of the season, and Bryce Harper drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. David Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in relief in his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Phillies since Game 5 of the 2022 World Series. Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect ninth for his his 22nd save and sixt5h with Philly since being acquired at the trade deadline. Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suarez had RBI doubles for Seattle, which has lost four straight and six of seven. Bryce Miller was activated from the injured list before the game and made his first start since May 12 for the Mariners. He allowed four runs on five hits in five innings. Mookie Betts remains at shortstop, Teoscar Hernández in right in Dodgers starting lineup
DENVER — Mookie Betts was back at shortstop and Teoscar Hernández remained in right field for the Dodgers on Tuesday, a day after two questionable fielding plays in the outfield led to two runs in a 4-3 walk-off loss to the last-place Colorado Rockies. Hernández's defense has increasingly become a matter of concern for manager Dave Roberts and Monday's loss was followed by a meeting involving Roberts; Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers president of baseball operations; and Betts, who has expressed a willingness to move back to right field where he was a six-time gold glove winner. Hernández is ranked 64th among National League right fielders with a defensive WAR of -0.4 and his two errors are tied for fourth-most in the league. 'He's got to get better out there. There's just no way to put it,' Roberts said after Monday's game of Hernández. 'It's not a lack of effort. But, you know, we've just got to kind of get better. We do.' Betts, meanwhile, twice led the American League in fielding average and putouts as the Boston Red Sox's right fielder. But he's played full time at shortstop full time this season. 'Defense is a big part of postseason baseball and winning baseball,' Roberts said. Betts' move to the infield has arguably weakened the Dodgers in two ways: Hernández's defense and Betts' offense. Playing the infield, especially shortstop, is far more taxing mentally than playing in the outfield and Betts is slashing a career-low .242/.312/.370 this season. Moving Betts back to right field would likely mean using Alex Freeland or Miguel Rojas at shortstop, at least in the short term. Freeland played nearly 300 games at shortstop in the minors while Rojas has played more than 940 games there in the majors. Hernández, second on the team with 74 RBIs and tied for second with 20 home runs, would then move to left field — a less-demanding position defensively than right field — in place of Michael Conforto, whose .190 batting average is the worst in the majors among players with at least 300 at-bats. Moving Betts back to the outfielder could be easier for Roberts when utility players Tommy Edman, Hyeseong Kim and Kiké Hernández return from the injured list, giving the manager more depth and flexibility. Kim, who will begin a rehab assignment this week, is the furthest along and could be back by early next week.
