MasterChef 2025 introduces surprising twist ahead of grand finale

Yahoo3 days ago
After starting with a cast of 20 former contestants, this year's season of MasterChef Australia has whittled its way down to just three people. Jamie Fleming, Laura Sharrad, and Callum Hann have all advanced to the final week of the competition, with one set to walk away with the coveted title and $250,000 grand prize.
It must be a familiar feeling for Laura, who has famously finished as runner-up in her two previous seasons, in 2014 and 2020. Meanwhile, Callum also placed second back in 2010, won MasterChef All Stars two years later, and made it to the top four in 2020.
This makes Jamie the only remaining contestant who has never competed in a MasterChef grand finale, as he came fourth in his original season in 2014.

Andy Allen confirms wild finale secret
MasterChef judge Andy Allen recently confirmed that the series films alternate endings each season to prevent the results from leaking, and only a few people behind the scenes know who the actual winner is before the episode airs on TV.
However, one of this year's contestants tells Yahoo Lifestyle that it was 'obvious' which of the two finalists won the competition.
'They definitely filmed multiple endings, but because we witnessed both, for me anyway, it was fairly obvious who it was,' they share. 'There were certain signs with one particular contestant that they definitely seemed like they won.'
MasterChef cast reveal who they want to win
In the lead-up to the much-anticipated finale, several contestants have told Yahoo Lifestyle who they hope will win this year's season of MasterChef.
Alana Lowes shared that she thinks Callum has what it takes to go all the way, adding: 'His way of creating Michelin-quality desserts is incredible. Then I'd also love to see my Queensland mate Jamie take out the crown. I'm torn, I want them all to win!'
Rue Mupedzi revealed that out of the remaining finalists, she's rooting for Laura, but 'at the end of the day, everyone is a winner being asked to come back to MasterChef Australia'.

Savindri 'Sav' Perera, who was recently announced as a judge on MasterChef Sri Lanka, also said she would love to see Callum or Laura win because it's their third time competing on the show.
'When we were at the beginning of the season, just looking at the level of experience that they have, you knew they were going to go far,' she remarked. 'All I can say is it's literally anyone's game, and it literally could be anyone out of those guys.'

MasterChef Edits Second Contestant Out Of This Year's Series

A second contestant who took part in this year's series of MasterChef has been edited out of the show, the BBC has revealed. MasterChef has been plagued by scandal over the last year, with both Gregg Wallace and his co-presenter John Torode eventually being dropped last month following misconduct allegations. This latest development comes after another contestant from the current series confirmed she was being edited out of the show, having claimed that she'd first urged the BBC not to air the season at all. A spokesperson for the show's production company, Banijay, said in a fresh statement to BBC News: 'One other contributor decided that given recent events they would like not to be included. We have of course accepted their wishes and edited them out of the show.' Gregg was dropped as host of MasterChef in July, after almost 20 years at the helm, following claims that were upheld in a report alleging the use of sexual language and one case of unwanted physical contact. He has since apologised for 'any distress caused' by his behaviour, while also noting that he was cleared of what he described as 'the most serious and sensational accusations'. John was also later dropped after a complaint of alleged racist language was upheld, though he has since claimed he has 'no recollection of what I'm accused of'. The BBC went ahead with airing this year's series, filmed towards the end of last year, in a move they have described as 'the right thing to do' for the chefs who took part. However, contestant Sarah Shafi, the first participant who asked to be edited out of the show, expressed her opposition to the show being aired altogether. 'Prominent figures have been abusing their power. What message does that send out to women?' she told The Guardian. In a previous statement, the BBC said it had 'not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it'. The broadcaster has already reported a fall in ratings for this year's MasterChef, with just under two million tuning in to the first episode compared to about 2.7 million for last year's launch, though this figure can be affected by a number of factors, including the different times of the year each episode went live at. Critics have also noted that the apparent reediting of the show has disrupted its usual format, with The Telegraph claiming the new season has 'no humour or edge', and The Independent calling it 'troubling viewing'. In a Leather Trench and Boots in Hand, Jenna Ortega Takes Beach Goth Style to the Extreme

Jenna Ortega's press tour for Wednesday has been a goth girl triumph—with the help of her stylist Enrique Melendez, the duo have crafted a wardrobe that expands the gothic universe of the show beyond any other attempt at celebrity method dressing. The actor has slipped into pirate witch-esque Vivienne Westwood, champagne silks, freaky Simone Rocha prints, and an elevated pair of mall goth boots. But a stop-off in Australia posed some questions—how does Wednesday Addams-core translate to Bondi Beach? Well, Jenna Ortega has come with the answers. Photo: Backgrid Photographed on the famous Sydney beach in between promo duties, Ortega wore a long leather trench coat tied at the waist with a nude slip underneath, with black, elongated cat eye sunglasses. She was wearing a pair of black buckle biker boots, but kicked them off to paddle her feet. While Ortega's group of friends dressed more for the coastal setting in denim, tanks, and shorts, Ortega stayed committed.

Second MasterChef contestant edited out of new series after presenters sacked

A second MasterChef contestant has been edited out of the current BBC One series, which has faced controversy and seen both presenters dropped from their roles. It was previously announced that Sarah Shafi had been removed from the show after asking for it not to be broadcast, following a report that upheld claims against hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode. A spokesperson for the show's production company, Banijay UK, said: 'One other contributor decided that, given recent events, they would like not to be included. We have, of course, accepted their wishes and edited them out of the show.' Both Wallace and Torode remain in the series, which began last week on BBC One and on iPlayer. In November 2024, it was announced that Wallace would step away from his role on the BBC cooking show while historical allegations of misconduct were investigated, and last month a statement from Banijay UK and the BBC said they had agreed 'Mr Wallace's return to MasterChef is untenable'. Wallace, 60, issued an apology saying he was 'deeply sorry for any distress caused' and that he 'never set out to harm or humiliate' in the wake of the Lewis Silkin review, which saw 45 out of 83 allegations made against him upheld. Torode, 60, was the subject of an allegation about using racist language that was upheld as part of the review, but the TV star said he had 'no recollection of the incident' and was 'shocked and saddened' by the claim. The PA news agency understands the second contestant to be edited out of the show has asked not to be identified and will not feature in the show. The episode which would have featured the individual was broadcast on BBC One on Wednesday night, but the programme featured only five chefs rather than the usual six. Last month, the BBC confirmed the series, which was filmed last year before allegations against Wallace and Torode were upheld, would be broadcast in August, adding that it had 'not been an easy decision in the circumstances.' It added: 'In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC. 'However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series. 'At this stage, we have not taken a decision on the celebrity series and Christmas special, which was filmed earlier this year, and we will confirm our plans later in the year.' In an interview with The Sun last month, Wallace apologised to anyone hurt by his behaviour but insisted he is 'not a groper, a sex pest or a flasher'. Torode and Wallace became MasterChef co-hosts in 2005 and celebrated the shows 20th anniversary at a dinner in 2024, which Wallace said was 'one of the most emotional evenings' of his life. MasterChef series 21 next airs at 8pm on BBC One.
