Chatham libraries to offer free plant seeds in September
Chatham-Kent Public Library is announcing the return of the plant seeds program. The initiative is called CKPL Grows Seed Library: Fall Native Plants to Ontario and Canada. Starting Sept. 2 all branches of CKPL will have a small variety of native plant seeds available for check out. This seed library contains native plant seeds for many popular local plants including Black-Eyed Susan, Butterfly Weed, Swamp and Common Milkweed, Purple Coneflower, and New England Asters to name a few. The seed library provides free seeds for residents to borrow so they can grow healthy gardens, have access to affordable flowers to create beautiful spaces in their own backyards and communities. Operation begins to free ship run aground in St. Lawrence River near Montreal

(Ken Dow / CTV News) VERCHÈRES — Authorities are unloading a cargo vessel run aground in the St. Lawrence River near Montreal in an attempt to free the ship. The Federal Yamaska ran aground near Verchères, Que., at around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, following a complete loss of engines. A first attempt to refloat the 180-mere bulk carrier was unsuccessful. The Canadian Coast Guard says the unloading operation will take several hours and is necessary before a new refloating attempt can be made. The ship carrying sugar is partially in the channel but other vessels are able to navigate around it. Coast guard members are on site with Eastern Canada Response Corp., a company that specializes in marine oil spill response. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 15, 2025.

Residents flee as residence burns near downtown Sudbury
Firefighters in Sudbury say a triplex was severely damaged Thursday evening on Lloyd Street in Greater Sudbury. Residents escaped but three cats died. (Amanda Hicks/CTV News) The triplex was occupied at the time of the fire, but all occupants were able to get out safely, except for three cats who were killed. Mellin said the fire started on the porch and migrated into an open window. The front of the residence was engulfed in flames when firefighters from five stations responded. He was unsure whether there were working smoke alarms in the building. The blaze is not believed to be suspicious. One of the occupants was helped by the Red Cross with temporary lodgings. The blaze caused about $250,000 in damage.
