Sarawak strengthens halal ecosystem with technical, audit training
KUCHING (Aug 4): Fifteen participants have completed a seven-day training titled 'The Road to Halal Professional: Competency and Internal Audit Training', aimed at strengthening expertise in the halal industry.
The programme, which concluded on Saturday, was jointly organised by Sarawak Skills, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak Branch, and the Philippines' Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
It was supported by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (Mintred), and the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (Sara-Bif).
UiTM Sarawak Branch Rector, Prof Dr Firdaus Abdullah, who officiated the closing, stated that the training was designed to deliver a blend of technical education, hands-on learning, and industry-focused capacity building, aligned with Malaysia's Department of Islamic Development (Jakim) standards.
The curriculum included lectures, site visits, and audit simulations, with participants touring certified halal facilities such as the Sara-Bif Restaurant, Halal Abattoir, and the Corned Beef Factory.
'For UiTM Sarawak Branch, this was more than just a training programme. It reflects our strategic commitment to strengthening the halal ecosystem both within Sarawak and internationally,' said Dr Firdaus in a statement.
He further noted that UiTM Sarawak is currently the only Jakim-recognised halal training provider in the state.
'We remain committed to advancing our role in the global halal movement,' he added.
Sarawak Skills executive director, Hallman Sabri, who also serves as chairman of the Federation of Malaysian Skills Development Centres, underscored the importance of cross-border knowledge exchange.
'Sarawak is proud to support partnerships that promote knowledge-sharing and professional growth.
'This programme is a prime example of how international cooperation can enhance halal industry standards,' he said.
Participants engaged in comprehensive training modules delivered by UiTM Sarawak's expert trainers, with facilitation from Sarawak Skills and coordination by TESDA.

The government, through the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), will implement a new digital system, MyHALALINGREDIENTS, starting August 15 2025, to streamline the halal certification process. The platform is designed to record and assess all raw materials used by industries and will be integrated with the existing MYeHALAL system. The session will provide detailed guidance on implementing the new system across all industry categories and halal certification schemes. TVET programme empowers 95 Lingga residents with practical skills to boost livelihood

LINGGA (Aug 14): A two-day Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme has equipped 95 local residents, including farmers, retirees, homemakers, single mothers, and school leavers, with practical skills aimed at boosting their livelihoods and income. Organised by the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) in collaboration with Sarawak Skills, the short-term courses were funded through MEITD's special grant and brought directly to the community. Participants received hands-on training in four courses: Basic Hydroponic Cultivation using Nutrient Film Technique (NFT); Basic Bread, Bun and Pastry Making; Basic Electrical Wiring; and Jewellery Making (Ceramics). Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who officiated at the closing ceremony, said the initiative reflects the state's commitment under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to create a skilled and competitive workforce and achieve high-income status by 2030. 'We are not just teaching skills. We are building confidence, inspiring entrepreneurship, and creating pathways to better livelihoods. Whether it leads to a small business or simply the joy of learning, every skill gained today is an opportunity for tomorrow,' he said in a statement released by the organisers. The programme also supports Sarawak's target for 20 per cent of Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) graduates to pursue TVET education. Combined with soft skills training, these courses are designed to help participants remain competitive in a fast-changing job market. For many, the courses marked a turning point. Some participants intend to cultivate hydroponic vegetables, others plan to start home-based bakeries, while some are keen to create handcrafted jewellery. The event concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony and a lucky draw, with participants expressing optimism about applying their newly acquired skills. JPJ: ‘SIS' number plates up for auction Aug 15 to mark Selangor Sultan's Silver Jubilee
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) today said it will open online bidding from August 15 for a special 'SIS' vehicle registration plate series. It will be held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's reign in 2026. 'The bidding process is subject to the existing terms and conditions set under the JPJeBid System. 'Any successfully bid registration number must be registered to a vehicle within twelve months from the date of the official bidding results letter,' the department said in a statement. JPJ said the 'SIS' index stands for 'Sultan Idris Shah' and honours the ninth Sultan of Selangor, marking the celebration of His Royal Highness' 25 years on the throne next year. The department said the bidding will be conducted via its JPJeBid system and will run from August 15 until 10pm on August 19, with results to be announced on the next day. JPJ added that the online auction is open to all members of the public, in line with JPJ's aim of providing a transparent and accessible platform for the purchase of special registration numbers. 'All are welcome to participate through JPJeBid as a medium to obtain their preferred registration number from the SIS series,' the department said.
