Why Commanders Must Be Very Careful With Terry McLaurin Extension
Why Commanders Must Be Very Careful With Terry McLaurin Extension originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's a mistake made by many teams around the league. Organizations become so loyal to particular players that they look to give them large contract extensions even when they are past their prime or otherwise slightly unworthy. Advertisement Sometimes, teams extend a player to a long-term deal only to watch their production fall off a cliff after a few years. That's a lesson the Washington Commanders know they must be careful with regarding Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The Ohio State product is entering the final year of his contract with Washington, and is coming off his best season. He recorded a career-high 13 touchdowns with rookie phenom Jayden Daniels throwing him the football. McLaurin is going to be 30 years old by the time the 2025 season begins, though. While he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down just yet, a decline can happen to any aging player. Advertisement If Washington is going to give their top receiver a long-term extension, they want to make sure they have enough protection on their own end where they won't be hurt by the cap if McLaurin's production dips. It is about a contract with escapability. Add it all up? And it's a good enough reason for the receiver to be frustrated with how contract talks have gone. Washington could be in deep trouble if they extend McLaurin and his Pro Bowl production isn't matched as he gets older. Giving him an extension in the $30 million APY range without the Commanders providing themselves an Eventual out may do more harm than good for the team in the long term. Advertisement That doesn't mean McLaurin isn't worthy of an extension; he absolutely is. It just means Washington needs to be extra careful how they spend their money now and over the next few years. … with a compromise here being the eventual best answer. Panthers' Trevor Etienne eager for Week One meeting with Jaguars and brother Travis
When Trevor Etienne was picked by the Panthers in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft, a top priority in the family was to check whether the Panthers play the Jaguars, and Trevor's brother, fellow running back Travis Etienne. Not only do they play, but they'll play in Week One. Trevor Etienne says the family is thrilled. 'As soon as we found out the big news, we already were excited about playing each other this year,' Trevor Etienne said, via 'And then come to find out that it will be Week One. It's even more exciting, and we all can't wait.' The Etienne brothers' mom, Donnetta Etienne, is already preparing her outfit for the game: She reached out to John Brown, the father of Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and Bears receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, to ask him where he got the split Lions/Bears jersey he wears when his two sons face each other. 'That's definitely all she's been talking about so far after finding out like she's adamant about getting this split jersey done for the game,' Trevor Etienne said. 'I think she got in touch with Amon-Ra St. Brown's father and see how he did it. We were at the NFLPA, and I think she was able to get in touch with him at the premiere, and I think she was able to figure out how he did it and get some pointers and tips on how to handle that, on how to get this split jersey.' The 26-year-old Travis and the 20-year-old Trevor weren't close enough in age to be either teammates or opponents at any other level of football, but they'll be on the same field for the first game of Trevor's career.

Texas Attracting Relatives of NFL and NBA Stars is Raising Eyebrows Across College Football
Texas Attracting Relatives of NFL and NBA Stars is Raising Eyebrows Across College Football originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Whether fans are ready or not, the next wave of athletes has a high chance of making one feel old. Advertisement The athletes that many of us grew up watching now have children set to hit the college or professional ranks. While these players are scattered throughout the country, there seems to be a hotbed forming in Austin, Texas, at the most important position in football. Following the departure of Quinn Ewers, who was drafted in the seventh round with the 231st overall pick by the Miami Dolphins, the Longhorns will turn to former five-star and No. 1 recruit in the 2023 class, Arch Manning. Although he has two starts under his belt, fans have long been clamoring for the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning to take over. While the Manning name has plenty of notoriety, the Texas quarterback room has a chance to be headlined by the son of a former pro athlete for years to come. The Longhorns hold a commitment from 2026 five-star Dia Bell, the son of former Phoenix Suns star and two-time All-NBA Defensive Team selection, Raja Bell. They are also in the mix for a 2027 four-star Gunner Rivers, who is the son of eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Philip Rivers. Advertisement With Steve Sarkisian and Texas having a chance to obtain so much potential star power with famous relatives, fans online are taking notice. "Which would be indicative of NFL QBs believing in Sark's QB development," pointed out one fan. "That'd be insane," said another. "I sense a pattern there 🤔," suspected a third. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning takes the field before his team's College Football Playoff game against the Clemson Tigers at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Dec. 21, Miron-Imagn Images As it stands, Rivers doesn't hold an offer from the Longhorns, but the No. 1 player in Alabama did recently attend a camp. "My first time here, it went well, enjoyed, and good talking to all the coaches," Gunner Rivers told On3 about his Longhorns visit. "I had a great time." This past season for St. Michael Catholic, he threw for 3,927 yards and 36 touchdowns, leading his team to the semifinals of Alabama's 4A playoffs. As for Bell, he threw for 2,597 yards with 29 touchdowns while leading American Heritage to a 9-2 record before he suffered a season-ending injury in the playoffs. Advertisement While there's a chance this quarterback succession of relatives of former pros doesn't happen, Texas is clearly on track to attract the biggest names for years to come.
