Atletico title hopes evaporate in Liga draw with Espanyol

Atletico Madrid's slim Spanish title hopes faded further with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Espanyol on Saturday in La Liga.
Javi Puado earned the Catalan side a point with a penalty after Cesar Azpilicueta put the visitors ahead, leaving the Rojiblancos six points behind league leaders Barcelona despite having played an extra match.

Barcelona host Girona on Sunday in a Catalan derby, while Real Madrid, second and three points ahead of Atletico, welcome Leganes later Saturday.
After Barca beat Atletico 4-2 in their previous top flight outing, before the international break, Diego Simeone's side knew they could not afford to lose further ground in the title race.
Simeone put Julian Alvarez and Rodrigo de Paul on the bench after they featured in midweek for Argentina against Brazil in South American World Cup qualifying.
Uruguay international Jose Gimenez also began on the bench but he was needed to replace Robin Le Normand midway through the first half after a clash of heads.

Espanyol, battling relegation and provisionally 15th, fought gamely against an Atletico side that played within themselves.
Marcos Llorente had a goal disallowed early on for offside but Atletico failed to create further chances until Azpilicueta blasted the visitors ahead from distance.
It was his first goal for three years and also his first for Atletico Madrid, but it was worth the wait as he hit a sumptuous volley into the top corner after Antoine Griezmann's cross was cleared to the edge of the box.
Conor Gallagher came close before the break and Alexander Sorloth dragged a shot wide of the post as Atletico sought a second.

Espanyol had created little danger but found a way back level when Clement Lenglet blatantly pulled Leandro Cabrera's shirt in the box.
Puado rammed the resulting penalty into the top corner past Jan Oblak's outstretched arm after 71 minutes.
Alvarez, on from the bench, hit the sidenetting as the clock ran down on Atletico's ambitions, with Joan Garcia saving from a Griezmann header at the death.
Eliminated from the Champions League by rivals Real Madrid, Simeone's side's last realistic hope of silverware is in the Copa del Rey, where they face Barcelona in the semi-final second leg on Wednesday.

Bayern Munich open talks with Manchester United for Antony, Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid also interested

Bayern Munich open talks with Manchester United for Antony, Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid also interested Manchester United plan to reinforce Ruben Amorim's squad after a disappointing last season by raising capital through the sales of stars who spent last season out on loan, like Antony. The Brazilian enjoyed a sensational six-month spell at Real Betis, netting nine times while also registering five assists in only 26 games and carrying the Spanish side to the UEFA Conference League final. Advertisement They were keen to try and hold on to the Brazil international but were offering another loan deal, something the Red Devils are in no mood to entertain. INEOS feel, given Antony's current form, this might be the best time to sell him given the interest he is generating all across Europe. Antony sale on the cards They have slapped a transfer fee of €50 million on the 25-year-old's head which Betis are unlikely to be able to afford anytime soon. Atletico Madrid and surprisingly, Arsenal are also keen on the United star. Now, as per ESPN Brazil (via TZ), Bayern Munich have also joined the race and will have to compete with domestic rivals Bayer Leverkusen for the ex-Ajax star. Advertisement Leverkusen, who have appointed Erik ten Hag as their new boss, are pushing for another reunion with the winger after choosing to bring him to Old Trafford from Amsterdam for a mammoth €95 million. Three-way battle following Bayern Munich's entry They plan to use the money raised from Florian Wirtz's sale to try and secure Antony's signing. The report also states that the Bavarian giants have begun talks with the Red Devils, enquiring about the terms of a potential transfer while Atletico are also in no mood to back down. The increased interest will suit INEOS, who will be looking to initiate a bidding war to try and secure the highest fee possible from his sale. Gary Payton Delivers Strong Statement on Luka Doncic's Defense

Gary Payton Delivers Strong Statement on Luka Doncic's Defense originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Luka Doncic is in the midst of what many believe will be a transformative offseason for the 26-year-old Slovenian guard. After a rough 2024-25 season where he got heartbreakingly traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, Doncic has come under a lot of criticism in the wake of the Mavericks moving on from him. Advertisement Even though modern NBA guards are expected to be greater offensive contributors than defensive players, there is still tremendous value in being a two-way star. That's what former NBA Champion and one of the greatest defensive guards in NBA history, Gary Payton, believes is the next step for Luka Doncic. Amid his first-ever visit to India for the BudX NBA House event in Mumbai, the 1996 NBA Defensive Player of the Year shared his strong take on Doncic's defense at a press conference. Gary Payton addressing the media at the BudX NBA House Press Conference in Mumbai, provided by NBA India "You have to be dedicated to playing defense. Maybe it's not good for him (Luka); he's a scorer. If he puts his mind to it, I tell every kid that I do camps with, it's a mindset to play defense... You have to have great hands and feet to do that. You have to be able to move. It takes sacrifice to do that. That's just the way it goes," the former nine-time NBA All-Defensive First Team honoree said. Advertisement "I don't think Luka is a defensive player; he's a scorer. But now. If he wants to, yes. But does he want to do it? That's up to him, not up to us. He's an athlete. He's got great ability, but now does he want to go change it and prove people wrong that he can play defense? If that were me, I would change that. I'll go out there and try to defend somebody, get in shape, and do the things I gotta do." Payton, the 1996 NBA steals leader, is one of the greatest defenders in NBA history and excelled on that end as a guard. His well-rounded two-way game helped him take the Seattle SuperSonics to multiple NBA Finals in the '90s, but Doncic's offensive brilliance helped him make an NBA Finals appearance in 2024. With conditioning and defensive concerns plaguing Doncic's last few seasons in Dallas, many have wondered if the Mavericks were right in parting with him, especially with the defensive limitations many have claimed him to have. Advertisement If Doncic wants to be remembered as one of the greatest guards the game has ever seen, he will have to make sure he can start changing his defensive reputation starting next season. We know how potent he can be offensively, averaging 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists amid a down season in 2024-25.
