Pope Leo XIV brings hope to Chicago sports fans, and the Knicks for their Villanova ties
The sports loyalties of Pope Leo XIV became a topic of conversation almost as soon as the white smoke emerged from the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.
Elected on Thursday, Robert Prevost is
the first pope
from the United States in the history of the Catholic Church. The
Chicago-born
missionary, who took the name
Leo XIV
, also attended Villanova University near Philadelphia, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1977.
Chicago's two baseball teams were front and center as sports fans reacted to the news.
It was initially reported that the new pope was a Cubs fan. The team congratulated Pope Leo XIV
in a post on X
that had a picture of Wrigley Field's iconic marquee with the message: HEY, CHICAGO. HE'S A CUBS FAN!
But his brother, John Prevost,
set the record straight
in an interview with WGN-TV. The pope is a White Sox fan.
'He was never ever a Cubs fan, so I don't know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan,' John said, adding that the confusion might stem from the fact their mother's side of the family were North Siders and Cubs fans.
The revelation prompted White Sox fans to wonder about the pope's ability to convince owner Jerry Reinsdorf to sell the last-place team.
Long-suffering Bears fans weighed in, too.
One remarked on X that
Chicago developed a pope
before the Bears developed a quarterback. Another said the
Bears now have a direct line to God.
And another said the Bears no longer will be on the
wrong side of Hail Marys
, a reference to Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels' 52-yard Hail Mary completion to Noah Brown to beat the Bears in October.
The election of the new pope coincides with a trio of former Villanova players leading the New York Knicks on an NBA playoff run. It didn't take long for a
photoshopped picture
of the four of them together to show up on social media.
The Knicks erased 20-point deficits in winning Games 1 and 2 against the defending champion Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Now fans are praying the combination of the Villanova guys and
the new pope
can help the team to its first NBA title since 1973.

A fresh start may very well be the best thing for him. Envisioning playing for the Padres, a team that badly needs an outfielder, should be on his mind. The White Sox can get it done. They would receive prospects in return, and Padres' GM A.J. Preller has not shied away from making blockbuster moves. Over the last few seasons, he has done everything he can to turn the Padres into a winning ball club. A lot of moves have been questionable, but adding a star in this league to the roster has a chance to be one of his better moves.

The New York Knicks parted ways with coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday, just days after the team was eliminated from what was its first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 years. Almost immediately, star guard Josh Hart spoke out on social media about his now former head coach. The split came just days after Knicks star Jalen Brunson defended Thibodeau after their loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 6, which ended their postseason run. At least one person didn't waste any time vying for the now open job in Manhattan, too. The Knicks won 51 games this season and reached the conference finals for the first time since 2000. Thibodeau got the Knicks to the playoffs in four of his five seasons at the helm, and he racked up back-to-back 50-win seasons for the first time since the early 1990s. Before Thibodeau was hired, the Knicks hadn't made the playoffs in seven seasons. By all accounts, Thibodeau's time with the Knicks was a success. As has been the case at his previous stops in Chicago and Minnesota, it just wasn't successful enough.

One Panthers regular out for Game 1 of Stanley Cup Final. How the lineup should look
The Florida Panthers will be without one of their regulars for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. Forward A.J. Greer is out as he continues to deal with an undisclosed injury. Jesper Boqvist will take his place in the lineup as the left wing on Florida's fourth line with Tomas Nosek at center and Jonah Gadjovich on the right wing. Greer had been banged up for most of the Panthers' Eastern Conference final series against the Carolina Hurricanes, which Florida won in five games. He missed the final 4:02 of Game 3 after appearing to tighten something up late in that game, a 6-2 Florida win. He did not play at all in Game 4 and then exited the Panthers' 5-3 series-clinching win in Game 5 early in the third period, not taking the ice for the final 18:35 of the contest. Through 12 postseason games, Greer has three points (two goals, one assist) in addition to logging 45 hits while averaging just 7:47 of ice time. This is the third time in the past nine playoff games that Boqvist will draw into the lineup for an injured teammate.
