Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday indirectly responded to former US President Donald Trump's recent remarks labelling India's economy as 'dead,' asserting that India is poised to become the world's third-largest economy and must remain vigilant in protecting its interests amid global instability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a public meeting, in Varanasi.(PMO) Addressing a rally in Varanasi, PM Modi stressed the importance of economic self-reliance and reiterated his government's commitment to farmers, small industries, and youth employment. His remarks came just days after Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports and warned of further economic penalties over India's continued trade with Russia. 'There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are focusing on their individual interests. India is set to become the third biggest economy in the world, and that is why India will have to stay alert as far as its economic interests are concerned,' the Prime Minister said. While Modi did not mention Trump by name, his comments were seen as a veiled retort to the US President's assertion that India's economy had "tanked" and that it relies heavily on American markets. Underscoring India's economic resilience, Modi called on citizens and the business community to support indigenous production through a renewed commitment to the 'vocal for local' movement. 'We will buy only those things that are made by Indians. We need to become vocal for local,' he urged the crowd, calling for a nationwide resolve to buy and promote 'swadeshi' products. 'Those who want the best for the country and want to see India as the third biggest economy in the world, be it any political party, should leave their differences aside and instil a resolution for 'swadeshi' products,' he added. The Prime Minister further said that the government's highest priority remains ensuring the welfare of farmers, small-scale industries, and employment generation. 'Our farmers, our small-scale industries, the employment for youth — their interest is our top priority. The government is doing everything it can in the best interest of the country. However, there are some responsibilities we have as citizens,' he said. PM Modi also made a direct appeal to India's business community, urging them to prioritize domestic products, especially in light of global disruptions. 'I also want to say to my brothers and sisters in the business community — the world is going through instability, and we should commit to selling only swadeshi goods,' he said. Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹2,200 crore in Varanasi. These included the widening and strengthening of key roads, construction of railway overbridges, and improvements to both rural and urban transportation corridors — part of ongoing efforts to modernize the constituency he has represented since 2014.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on Saturday, August 2, and launched multiple development projects worth around ₹ 2,200 crore. While addressing the public, he accused SP and Congress governments of spreading rumours and misleading people. As he launched the 20th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme he said, 'Our government is working tirelessly for the welfare of farmers. The earlier governments did not even fulfil one scheme they had promised. BJP government delivers what it promises. PM Kisan Samman Nidhi has become an example of the strong will and intentions of the government.' With plans to benefit over 9.7 crore farmers across the country, the scheme aims to offer direct financial assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Charging at the opposition, he said, 'The anti-development governments like SP and Congress would spread rumours and mislead people in all ways possible.' According to PIB's press release dated August 1, ₹ 3.69 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers' accounts through 19 instalments since the scheme's launch in 2019. "This is very unfortunate for the country that a hopeless opposition is living with these false hopes. All they can do is lie to the farmers and mislead them... PM Kisan Samman Nidhi has been ongoing without a break since its inception. So far, ₹ 3.75 lakh crore have been credited into he accounts of beneficiary farmers... Farmers of Kashi alone have received ₹ 900 crores," DD News quoted the Prime Minister as saying. The development projects aim to nurture and boost infrastructure, education, healthcare, tourism, urban development and cultural heritage sectors. The prime focus of the allocated funds would be to 'preserve culturally significant water bodies,' progressive work on 'water purification and maintenance works at various kunds including Ramkund, Mandakini, Shankuldhara and others.' Striving to achieve holistic urban transformation with improved road connectivity and power infrastructure, significant investment will be made on 'widening and strengthening of the Varanasi - Bhadohi road and Chhitauni- Shool Tankeshwar road; and Railway Overbridge at Hardattpur.' Educational projects in focus include upgradation of 53 school buildings within the municipal boundary, the construction of a new district library and the rejuvenation of Government High Schools at Jakhini and Lalpur, among others. From inaugurating Animal Birth Control Centre and an associated Dog Care Centre, PM Modi facilitated inauguration of advanced medical equipment installations, including robotic surgery and CT scan facilities.

Amid Donald Trump's criticism of New Delhi's energy ties with Moscow, the Russian media reported that the Government of India has not issued any instructions to refineries in the country to stop their purchase of oil from Russia or explore other suppliers. 'The government did not ask refineries to stop buying Russian oil," news agency TASS reported, citing a governmental source. 'No instructions were also given regarding oil imports from other sources instead of Russia," the source added. Earlier in the day, news agency ANI reported, citing sources, that the Indian oil refiners continue to source oil from Russian suppliers. 'Their supply decisions are guided by price, grade of crude, inventories, logistics, and other economic factors," sources told ANI. The latest developments come as US President Trump said on Friday (local time) that he had 'heard" India was going to stop buying oil from Russia, describing the reported move as 'a good step". However, he added that he was unaware if it was true. 'I understand that India is no longer going to be buying oil from Russia. That's what I heard, I don't know if that's right or not. That is a good step. We will see what happens," Trump told reporters.
