Flight path obstacles at Gadchiroli airport site prompts state to look for alternative

Time of India4 hours ago

Nagpur: Too many obstacles in the flight path and prospects of further vertical growth in Gadchiroli city, given the development push, has prompted the state govt to look for an alternative site for its plan to build an airport in the Maoist-affected district.
The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) had planned the airport close to Gadchiroli city. The initial site covered four villages: Murkhada, Pulkhal, Kanori and Mudhja. MADC was appointed as the agency to acquire 229 acres of land for the project after the initial study was completed.
The study revealed that there were a number of obstacles in the flight path, including building of an educational institute, a high-tension line, and a power plant chimney.
If a flight path avoiding the obstacles was fixed at the same site, it would have increased the project cost by at least Rs150 crore, said sources. Rather, it is now decided to look for an alternative site. The city is expected to grow in the coming days, and the structures that come up may further obstruct the operations, said a source who is part of the project.
A senior official in the district administration confirmed the development.

MADC has intimated that a fresh site needs to be searched for the proposed airport. Now, a site slightly away from the city is being considered. Last week, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis issued directions to hold an obstacle limitation survey (OLS) for the airport. A source said this was meant for the fresh site. It would follow a pre-feasibility study of the airport at the new site.
An airport has been proposed at Gadchiroli in view of the development in the district.
Recently, Jindal Group announced plans to build the country's biggest integrated steel plant in the district. Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited (LMEL), which operates an iron ore mine, also commissioned a 4 million tonnes pellet-making plant. This is part of LMEL's plans to build an integrated steel plant too. The third company, Surjagad Ispat, also plans to build a steel plant in south Gadchiroli.
As per the airport plan, a 2,500-meter airstrip will be laid so that commercial planes can land in Gadchiroli.
Having an airport will do away with the need for investors or businessmen to travel to Nagpur and take a road journey further to Gadchiroli, a source said.
The four villages where the airport was earlier planned come under the Panchayats (Extension To Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA). The law gives autonomy to gram sabhas (village councils) on decisions related to the area. This means gram sabha approval would have been needed even for the airport.

Your aluminium cookware has expiry date: Experts

Bengaluru: Aluminium cookware is a staple in Indian kitchens, but if you've been using the same pot for years, it may be time for a rethink. At an orientation programme organised by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) here Monday, regulators and manufacturers stressed that aluminium utensils come with a limited life span and should be replaced every 12 to 24 months, depending on usage and material quality. While anodising and using heavier material can extend the cookware's life, BIS is now pushing for greater transparency. The updated standards mandate the labelling of aluminium grades on all products. Revised BIS norms require that toxic metal content — such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium — be kept below 0.05% in material for cookware. These specifications will apply to small enterprises from July 2025 and to micro enterprises from Oct 2025. Monday's session, aimed at briefing manufacturers on the revised 2024 BIS norms for cookware, triggered a wider conversation on consumer expectations and health risks from overused or degraded utensils. "Aluminium is a soft metal. If used at high temperatures over prolonged periods, even heavy-grade utensils can degrade in five-ten days. Light, wrought aluminium cookware lasts barely a year, while medium and heavy variants may stretch up to two years," Narendra Reddy Beesu, director, BIS Bengaluru, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Industry voices echoed this. "Customers today want lifetime use from aluminium cookware, but the realistic benchmark is 12 to 20 months. Those who want durability often move to tri-ply cookware, but that isn't affordable for the mass market yet," Rohit Chawla, co-founder, Kaviraj Kinox Kitchen, said. Some cookware manufacturers admitted that coatings begin to peel off after the first year — posing potential health hazards. "As you know, anything in excess is harmful. Beyond the warranty period, coatings start to wear off. That's when consumers should replace such utensils to avoid health hazards," one manufacturer said. "Pure aluminium is 'grade 19000', with 99% aluminium content. Other grades like '63540' or '60342' are alloys, which are harder, but mixed with other elements," Beesu explained. BIS clarified that warranties and guarantees are business decisions and not part of regulatory standards. "People often confuse warranty with compliance. That's a commercial strategy, not part of our standards," Beesu observed.

Wall Street's new darling: Stablecoin issuer Circle is minting billions

While Bitcoin grabs headlines with record-breaking rallies, a little-known crypto company is stealing the spotlight with a surprisingly simple business model. As reported by Circle Internet Group, the firm behind the USDC stablecoin, has seen its stock skyrocket 675% in just eleven trading days since going public on June 5—adding over $42 billion in market value. The firm now boasts, as per the report, a valuation that rivals Silicon Valley unicorns and AI giants, despite offering no revolutionary tech. Circle's model is shockingly straightforward, according to a report in Users exchange U. dollars for Circle's digital token, USDC, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the dollar. Circle takes those real dollars and invests them in low-risk, interest-earning assets. The surge in Circle's valuation comes amid growing optimism that stablecoins are going mainstream. The Senate's recent passage of the 'Genius Act', which opens the door for banks, fintechs, and even major retailers to use stablecoins for payments, has fueled bullish sentiment. Citi analysts reportedly predict the stablecoin market could grow to $3.7 trillion by 2030. Reddit's r/wallstreetbets is already buzzing, with one user quipping that Circle is 'a Treasury ETF in a trench coat.' Despite the hype, Circle's business faces serious vulnerabilities, the report stated. If the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, Circle's revenue—largely driven by interest on Treasury holdings—would shrink.
