
OSK Holdings shareholders approve bonus issue, 5 sen final dividend for FY24
The move is intended to reward shareholders by increasing their equity stake at no additional cost, as a gesture of appreciation for their continued trust and support in the group's long-term vision.
'We have delivered resilient results driven by our diversified portfolio and long-term growth strategy. The bonus issue and higher dividend payout demonstrate our appreciation to shareholders and our confidence in the group's future prospects,' executive chairman Tan Sri Ong Leong Huat said at the company's annual general meeting and extraordinary general meeting today.
At the meetings, shareholders approved OSK Holdings' financial statements for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024 (FY24) and endorsed key corporate proposals, including the issuance of bonus shares.
The group reported revenue of RM1.66 billion for FY24, marking a 3.75% increase from RM1.6 billion in the previous year. Profit before tax rose by 10% to RM611.4 million, up from RM555.1 million in FY23.
The improved performance was supported by stronger contributions across most business segments.
While the Industries segment recorded higher expenses, these were related to strategic investments, including the acquisition of two additional cable manufacturing plants in Johor, which is expected to enhance future production capacity once operational.
'We continue to see encouraging progress across our key segments, particularly in property and financial services. The strategic investment in expanding our industrial capabilities is also expected to support long-term growth as the new facility ramps up production.
'As we move forward, we remain focused on operational excellence and seizing growth opportunities to deliver sustained value to our shareholders,' Ong said.
The board proposed a single-tier final dividend of 5 sen per share for FY24, which was approved by shareholders, bringing the total dividend for FY24 to 8 sen.

Hyflux issued preference shares to fund Tuaspring as it had problems getting bank loans: Prosecution
SINGAPORE: Hyflux issued preference shares to fund its Tuaspring project because it had trouble getting bank loans, the prosecution said on the first day of the trial involving former senior executives of the failed water treatment plant. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Christopher Ong noted that a consortium of banks had raised concerns in 2011 over Hyflux's strategy of selling electricity to subsidise the sale of water to PUB. This led Hyflux to consider other avenues of raising funds. Its eventual collapse left about 34,000 investors of perpetual securities and preference shares, who had sunk in a combined $900 million, with nothing. Former Hyflux employees and bank representatives who were involved in negotiations on financing the Tuaspring integrated water and power project are expected to testify for the prosecution. In total, seven people have been charged over Hyflux's intentional failure to disclose information relating to Tuaspring, among other things. Six of them – Hyflux founder and former chief executive Olivia Lum Ooi Lin, former chief financial officer Cho Wee Peng, and former independent directors Teo Kiang Kok, Christopher Murugasu, Gay Chee Cheong, and Lee Joo Hai – are contesting their charges in a 56-day trial scheduled to run from Aug 11 to Feb 5, 2026. The prosecution will proceed on 11 charges, including two of the six charges Lum faces. The remaining four charges against Lum are stood down. The prosecution, in an opening statement to the State Court on Aug 11, said Hyflux won the tender for Singapore's second and largest desalination plant with the lowest submitted bid. It had proposed to sell water to PUB at a first-year tariff price of $0.45/m3, undercutting its competitors by at least 27 per cent. 'At this price, the desalination plant would operate at a loss,' Ong said. 'To make the project financially viable, and also fulfil PUB's requirement to procure or produce electricity for the desalination plant at Hyflux's cost, Hyflux intended for the power plant to supply electricity to the desalination plant, while actually selling the vast majority of the power that it generated to the national grid.' It was only from this sale that Hyflux would be able to make up for the desalination plant's losses and make the project profitable. But Hyflux had no prior experience in power generation, much less selling electricity. The Tuaspring Project would be the first time Hyflux entered the electricity market, the prosecution said. How it all unfolded To finance the Tuaspring project, which was initially projected to cost $890 million, Hyflux sought a term loan of about $527 million from a consortium of banks. Six banks signed in-principle commitment letters in October 2010 indicating their willingness to finance the project. But they had not been told of Hyflux's plan to build a power plant and sell excess electricity to the grid at the time, Mr Ong noted. In November 2010, when they found out about Hyflux's power strategy, they 'raised serious concerns'. In January 2011, they told Hyflux that they could not lend it money on the terms previously indicated, as the power plant introduced new 'merchant sale risk and operational risk'. On July 4, only three of the original six banks - DBS, Mizuho Corporate Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation - extended Hyflux financing of $150 million for the construction of the desalination plant. This financing was eventually terminated by Hyflux. Tuaspring was ultimately financed by a shareholder's loan of $840.4 million by Hyflux in October 2011, which was in turn refinanced with Maybank Singapore and Maybank Kim Eng Securities in September 2013. In January 2011, in the midst of their negotiations with the banks, Hyflux's management began to contemplate issuing of preference shares to raise funds. On Jan 19 2011, Hyflux senior vice president, legal (business) Yang Ai Chian informed the Board of the need to issue preference shares to 'increase our funding options' for 'several new major projects' that Hyflux was expected to win that year. In reality, this money was meant to fund Tuaspring because of the challenges Hyflux faced in getting bank financing. On April 13, Hyflux lodged an offer information statement with the Monetary Authority of Singapore to issue up to $200 million in 6% preference shares. These were oversubscribed and the offer amount was increased. Hyflux ultimately raised $400 million. But the statement did not mention risks arising from Hyflux's entry into the electricity business, or those associated with Hyflux's strategy for Tuaspring, which could affect the company's financial position or results, the prosecution said. The information was omitted because Lum wanted to downplay Tuaspring's significant exposure to the electricity market, both in Hyflux's announcement that it had been named the 'preferred bidder' for the desalination project, as well as in the offer information statement, the prosecution said. 'Lum was determined that Hyflux had to win the bid and cement its status as a global leader in the water treatment and desalination industry. Hyflux was facing setbacks in its Middle Eastern ventures and winning the Tuaspring bid was critical for strengthening the company's order book,' Ong said. 'She did not want to detract from the positive news of winning a landmark water project, by revealing the Tuaspring Project's reliance on electricity sales, and the fact that the low tariff price – the key to winning the tender – was only viable because of such electricity sales.' The prosecution also said Lum was well aware of the banks' negative reactions regarding the power plant component of the project, and feared that full disclosure might deter investors and compromise Hyflux's ability to raise funds through the planned preference shares. This, in turn, could jeopardise financial close for the project and potentially result in losing the bid, the prosecution said. The desalination plant of the Tuaspring Project became operational on Sept 18, 2013. But its power plant only became operational nearly two years later, on or around August 2015. It began selling electricity commercially on Feb 18, 2016. In March 2011, the average Uniform Singapore Energy Price had been around $187 per megawatt hour (MWh). By February 2016, this had fallen to around $49.10 per MWh. As the profitability of Tuaspring depended on electricity sales, this fall in electricity prices hit Hyflux hard. In its 2017 annual report, it reported a $115.6 million after tax loss. The report stated that the weak power market in Singapore drove losses for the first time in Hyflux's history, with the Tuaspring Project accounting for the majority of the losses. On May 21, 2018, Hyflux suspended trading of its shares. The next day, Hyflux announced that it had applied to seek court protection for debt reorganisation. On May 18, 2019, PUB took over the Tuaspring desalination plant. On June 1, 2022, a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysia-based YTL Power International, YTL Powerseraya, completed its acquisition of the Tuaspring power plant. By Nov 16, 2020, Hyflux entered judicial management and into liquidation on Jul;u21 July 2021. Other witnesses include a lawyer from Stamford Law Corporation, who was Hyflux's external legal counsel on the April 2011 offer information statement; an SGX representative who will provide evidence on the sequence of events that led to this case being investigated; and a PUB representative, who will testify to PUB's dealings with Hyflux and its employees and management during the tender and award process for Tuaspring. The Prosecution will also adduce evidence from a securities expert, Kevin Gin who will address why the omitted information ought to have been disclosed by Hyflux. A region on the move
AS the fifth-largest economy in the world right now, Asean's digital economy alone is expected to hit US$1 trillion (RM4.265 trillion) by 2030, with emerging sectors like fintech, green tech, artificial intelligence (AI) and agritech creating demand for skilled talent across the region. Yet, current mobility systems in Asean are not keeping up with the demand, especially for mid-skilled workers, TVET (technical and vocational education and training) graduates and those graduating in growing industries. 'The talent landscape is shifting fast. By 2030, over 60 million young people will enter Asean's workforce,' says TalentCorp Group chief executive officer Thomas Mathew at the preview of the Asean Youth Mobility Compendium recently. 'That's not just a statistic, it's a generation looking for purpose, skills, and pathways. 'The problem? Most of our crossborder mobility still centres on low-skilled roles. 'Meanwhile, demand is exploding in high-value areas, and we're not moving talent there fast enough. We must change that pace.' Asean's strength lies in its interdependence, he adds. 'Think about the electronics and electrical sector. Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore each play different roles but together they power a regional value chain. 'If talent could move as freely as goods, imagine the shared expertise, the speed of innovation, the mutual benefit.' That is why the agency, along with the Asia School of Business, has developed the Asean Youth Mobility Compendium, to identify and offer potential solutions to structural barriers to youth mobility such as visa restrictions, lack of crossborder credential recognition, and fragmented policies. Despite the strong economic case, former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming acknowledges that youth mobility has not yet become a top-tier policy concern. 'But this does not have to be the case,' he says. While leaders often cite Asean's collective GDP and market potential, there is little focus on the region's youth workforce. 'I think that is something we can change and add into the conversation, because I think that will be of interest to the stakeholders that we want to reach out to, whether it's international investors or people who want to penetrate the market within Asean,' Ong says. Don't be scared of brain drain Experts say that Malaysia is actually in a good position to champion a new model of regional talent exchange; one that is built on regional trust, collaboration and 'brain circulation'. 'Malaysia can be one of the key countries that can spearhead this kind of mobility thinking and implementation. 'We would be in a very good position to be able to spur and also work with other countries in the region, especially those that are on a similar development scale to us, to really grow the talent pipeline and talent pool in Asean,' says Ong. Or as Asia School of Business associate economics professor Dr Melati Nungsari put it, 'We are in a sweet spot within Asean', in terms of economic development, as we can benefit from both sending people outward and receiving people from other countries. But despite the advantages, Malaysia continues to treat mobility with caution, due to a long-held fear of 'brain drain', says Melati. 'I was trying to advocate for Asean basically like a European Union-style system, where you can work and do an internship wherever you want within Asean. 'But people are saying, oh, what if we lose all of our skilled talents to other countries? I don't think that's the right way to think about it,' she says. Brain drain will always exist because moving for a job as a concept has existed for thousands of years, she says, so the key is to build a Malaysia that people want to come back to. Instead of seeing outward mobility as a drain on national talent, she says, we should think about it as a form of circulating talent while building their capacity. 'So it's more about creating a Malaysia that people want to stay in rather than preventing people from moving out. 'The point is you build people, you don't restrict people. 'You should go get more experience and then hopefully come back,' she says. Ong says Malaysia is well-placed to spearhead a youth mobility movement within Asean. — KAMARUL ARIFFIN/The Star Brain drain will always exist, so instead of fearing it, we should work to build a Malaysia people want to return to, says Melati. Passport for the privileged? Outward mobility may elicit fears of brain drain, but inward mobility gets people worrying about their country being flooded by unskilled migrants, says Ong. So there is a need to focus on the skilled portion of the youth workforce to 'sell' this from a political perspective, he adds. 'The three areas that I think our focus should be on would be, firstly, financial services, given the fact that crossborder digital payments are growing very quickly, and that ecosystem is something that we can invest in. 'The second area would be in higher education in terms of students and academics as well, and the third one would be in the smart manufacturing ecosystem, specifically the electronics and electrical area, which is growing very important from a global supply chain perspective.' But to expand mobility, it's not just about opening doors but also making sure more people can walk through them. 'Mobility should not become a passport for the privileged,' reminds Malaysian Employers Federation vice-president Mohd Farid Shah Mohd Basir. Most crossborder mobility currently tends to benefit youths from urban, middle-to-upper-class backgrounds who have more access to such opportunities, creating a silent gap between the haves and have-nots. 'Most of my peers studied abroad, especially in the UK, and backpacking across Europe was the norm for them, but for many Malaysian local graduates like myself, even a short trip to Jakarta for our final semester farewell is seen as a once-in-a-lifetime experience of going outside Malaysia. 'And that gap in exposure and mobility is real and it's quite often unspoken,' shares a Malaysian graduate who attended the preview. If Asean is to truly unlock the potential of its youth workforce, the freedom to learn, work, and grow across borders must be made accessible and not just aspirational.

Malaysia's Islamic capital market hits RM2.56 trillion
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Islamic capital market stood at RM2.56 trillion as at end-April 2025, making up 63 per cent of the country's total capital market ofRM4.04 trillion, according to Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed. He said the country's Islamic capital market remains amongst the most developed globally, anchored by robust regulation, a credible syariah framework and a diverse base of issuers and investors. Fad'l added that syariah-compliant investments continued to dominate, with syariah market capitalisation reaching RM1.3 trillion, accounting for 66.1 per cent of the total market cap as at end-July. Meanwhile, syariah-compliant average daily trading value (ADV) reached RM1.6 billion or 64.4 per cent of the overall ADV of RM2.4 billion. So far, a total of 860 or 81 per cent out of 1,065 Bursa-listed companies were syariah-compliant. "These are not merely statistics but a testament to the importance and continued relevance of syariah investing in driving market participation and long-term value creation," Fad'l said in his speech at the Invest Shariah Conference 2025. Globally, 80 per cent of the Islamic finance industry assets remain concentrated in five markets, namely Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Fad'l said global Islamic finance assets surpassed US$5 trillion in 2024, up 12 per cent from 2023 and a 43 per cent increase since 2020. He said the industry is projected to reach US$7.5 trillion by 2028, reflecting rising demand for syariah-compliant finance across markets and asset classes. "Islamic finance is fast asserting its global prominence, reshaping how markets align financial returns with ethical values. "As investor expectations shift, Malaysia must strengthen its position through broader offerings, deeper connectivity and inclusive digital access," he added. Beyond equities, he said Malaysia's sukuk market is both mature and evolving, with applications now extending to environment, social and governance (ESG)-linked issuances, sovereign mandates and structured infrastructure financing. However, he said past successes cannot guarantee future relevance. "Leadership must be renewed through stronger cross-border linkages, broader product offerings and digital infrastructure that enables greater inclusion and accessibility," he added. Fad'l said the future of Islamic finance will not be shaped by scale alone, but by its ability to adapt, lead and deliver impact.
