Khalil Mack ‘couldn't give up on that dream' of winning with the Chargers
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Khalil Mack mulled retirement early in the offseason. It didn't take long for him to decide to return to the Los Angeles Chargers. He agreed on a contract extension in March, never becoming an unrestricted free agent. 'Got tremendous leadership here, very familiar with guys already here,' he said Wednesday at minicamp. 'It was a no-brainer.' Mack, who turned 34 in February, is in his 12th season in the league and fourth with the Chargers. Despite nine Pro Bowl selections and a Defensive Player of the Year honor, he has never won a playoff game in five appearances. 'You're chasing that feeling of wanting to win,' Mack said. 'I couldn't give up on that dream and that goal for myself and the franchise.' Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said having Mack return 'means everything.' 'Khalil is one of the best ever to do it,' he said. Mack was at the Chargers facility to train in February and March, setting a tone for his teammates. 'The impact that he had on other people to train at his level is pretty incredible,' Minter said. 'For young guys to have him around, it just makes everybody better.' Around the same time Mack re-signed, the Chargers released defensive end Joey Bosa. He later signed with the Buffalo Bills. 'I texted him the other day saying it was weird not having him in the room breaking the silence with his little awkward jokes,' Mack said. Second-year cornerback Tarheeb Still influenced Mack's decision to stay. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 'Just the mindset he has. His is the same approach and mindset when I train,' Mack said. 'I want to be a machine, move people easy.' Will this be Mack's final season? 'I'm trying not to speak too fast or too far in the future,' he said. 'My wife says, 'You keep saying you're going to retire. Why you keep doing that?'' ___ AP NFL:

Club World Cup: Jack Grealish left out of Man City squad
MIAMI (AP) — Jack Grealish has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Club World Cup. City manager Pep Guardiola named a 27-man squad for the tournament, which kicks off in Miami on Saturday, with Grealish a notable omission. The England forward was a British record signing when he moved to City from Aston Villa for 100 million pounds ($139 million then) in 2021 and went on to help the club win three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a host of other trophies. But he has become an increasingly peripheral figure and made only seven league starts last season. The 29-year-old Grealish's absence from the Club World Cup will add to the growing expectation that he will leave during the offseason, with Guardiola embarking on a squad rebuild following the team's first trophyless season in eight years. City's squad includes four new players signed in time to take part in the month-long tournament in the United States: Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli. In January, City also spent big to sign Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis as Guardiola began his overhaul of a squad that saw its dominance of English soccer broken by Liverpool last season. If Grealish goes, he is likely to be one of a number of players to move on. Kevin De Bruyne is leaving at the end of his contract this month and Kyle Walker is also likely to go after a loan move to AC Milan in January; as expected, neither player was in the squad. The other teams in the group are Juventus and Abu Dhabi's Al Ain. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:

Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. leaves minicamp practice after bruising right shoulder
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars Pro Bowl receiver Brian Thomas Jr. bruised his right shoulder during mandatory minicamp Wednesday, but coach Liam Coen said he could have returned to practice. Thomas landed hard on his shoulder while trying to catch a pass from Trevor Lawrence in 11-on-11 drills. The second-year pro walked off the field without assistance while holding his shoulder. Team trainers evaluated him in the indoor practice facility, and he later rejoined teammates on the sideline. 'He's fine,' Coen said. 'He absolutely could have gone back and played. Just bruised it a little bit. Said he had a great range of motion, strength. He was all good. So no issues, just precautionary.' Thomas caught 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie last season. He's expected to be the focal point of Coen's offense, especially after the Jaguars traded Christian Kirk and released Gabe Davis. 'Anytime guys go down, it's never fun to see, and we've been really blessed and fortunate,' Coen said.
