Turmoil in Tollywood: Technicians boycott actor Anirban Bhattacharya's music video shoot
The Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India has allegedly called for 'lifelong non-cooperation' against individuals, including Bhattacharya, who have filed a case in the Calcutta High Court against the Federation.
The escalating tensions came to a head on Monday, when Bhattacharya held a press conference at Yogesh Mime Academy at noon. He announced that shooting for a music video has stopped, as he has 'received' no response to his messages or calls to technicians. He said, 'The fight (I am in) for shooting may be long, and (I am) ready for this fight.'
In April this year, Bhattacharya and other filmmakers had moved the Calcutta High Court to 'put a check' on the alleged interference of the Federation in the work of directors.
On May 1, a large-scale meeting organised by the Federation hinted at 'tough decisions' against those involved in the High Court case against them, a discussion that reportedly became heated.
On May 13, the Federation allegedly communicated a collective decision of 'non-cooperation' to the production company SVF, specifically targeting Bhattacharya. A day later on May 14, the scheduled shooting for one of his music videos was halted.
Bhattacharya told mediapersons on Monday, 'I'm not the kind of person who will give up and cry in regret. I will try again. I will try so that I can execute this. So, we'll see.'
He has claimed that he will formally inform the court about the entire matter and will also inform them about the next steps to be taken. Bhattacharya is acting in the film 'Raghu Dakat', and has several directorial projects lined up — but now he is worried about their release.
However, he maintained: 'Bengali is my language. I have learned a lot from this industry… Whatever I know today, it's all because of Bengal. There's no question of going anywhere else.'

Vivek Agnihotri on The Bengal Files row: ‘Filmmakers are being silenced in the land of Satyajit Ray'
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri arrived in Kolkata for the trailer launch of his much-awaited film, The Bengal Files. However, things took an unexpected turn when the scheduled screening at PVR-INOX was abruptly cancelled. The event was then shifted to a private banquet hall in a five-star hotel, but that didn't change the outcome. The trailer screening was halted midway, not once, but twice, with Kolkata Police intervening to stop the launch. 'There are two constitutions in India, one Indian Constitution and another that runs here,' Agnihotri said at the event. If rumours are true, the trailer launch ran into trouble over securing permission from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. However, Agnihotri denied such rumours. 'We have paid all the money, done all the tests here. Today in Bengal, the police are being used for some people's political ambition. This tolabaji will not work with me. My name is Vivek Agnihotri. I cannot be silenced,' he said. After the screening was halted for the first time, Agnihotri alleged that the hotel's wires had been cut to prevent them from showcasing the trailer. Agnihotri alleged that some people came and cut wires. 'Have you ever seen anyone stop an event in a private hotel? I don't know who is doing it and why. Any Indian, Bengali will get to know about the uncovered truth after watching The Bengal Files. Who are these people who don't want people to know this? You already know the answer.' The Bengal Files trailer is currently streaming on YouTube. Written and directed by Agnihotri, the film is produced by him, Abhishek Agarwal, and Pallavi Joshi. The trailer introduced Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi taking the lead. It is based on the events of the Direct Action Day. The trailer was originally scheduled to release in a multiplex like any other ordinary film. When asked Vivek Agnihotri why his film trailer is being blocked in places, he had no answer. 'Multiple FIRs have been filed against us. ' 'We have taken all permissions. We took permission from ITC, ran tests, or else we would have never organised such an event. They are not telling us why it is being stopped. If this is not a dictatorship, then what is it? If this is not Fascism?' Police officials present at the spot refused to comment on the matter. 'Law and order have failed, and that's why it is important that everybody supports this film, The Bengal Files. So many police have been deployed here as if we are thieves or smugglers. We are filmmakers. If we are being silenced in the land of Satyajit Ray, then you can imagine what the situation is in Bengal," said Agnihotri, reacting upon claims of permission related issues. The Bengal Files has been facing challenges ever since filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri announced it. It is the final installment of his Files franchise. Elaborating on why he chose Kolkata, not any other city, for the release of the trailer despite repeated obstructions, the filmmaker argued that - 'If a film is made on the Dandi March, then where should it be launched?" "This film is about uniting people of Bharat. I don't know why someone would try to suppress this.' Pallavi Joshi, who is a part of the film cast and also the film producer, chimed in, "Yes, it is true that it would have been more convenient for us to launch this trailer somewhere else. People would have been able to watch it too. In fact, it would have been even more convenient if we had not made Bengal Files at all—if we had just made a love story with big stars. But why are we making these kinds of films? "The reason is that in this space, making a movie on this subject is very necessary. The audience will know what has happened to Bharat.' The Bengal Files will be released in theatres on 5 September.

‘The Bengal Files': Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri alleges trailer launch stopped at the last minute in Kolkata; TMC leader Kunal Ghosh slams director for ‘maligning' Bengal
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has claimed that the trailer launch event of his film, 'The Bengal Files', was stopped at the last moment at a five-star hotel in Kolkata on Saturday afternoon. The filmmaker further alleged that a huge contingent of the Kolkata Police was deployed both inside and outside the hotel premises, and that the laptop to be used for screening was also seized by the cops. On Friday, Agnihotri had stated that he would hold the trailer launch event at a private hotel after the program was cancelled at a movie hall. Speaking to the media, Agnihotri said, 'All the screens have been put up, all tests have been conducted from last night, now at the last minute they are saying we cannot screen it. There is some form of political pressure… who is the most powerful person in this state? If this is not a dictatorship, fascism, then what is it? Law and order in your state has failed, and this is the reason that everyone supports The Bengal Files.' 'Why was it not stopped in the morning? Why is it being stopped now? We have all the permissions. Screenings of films are being stopped in the land of filmmakers like Satyajit Ray…. The ruling party has lodged so many FIRs against me, I had gone to the Calcutta High Court, where a stay was given. If required, I will go to the Supreme Court,' he added. Agnihotri also alleged that some people cut all the wires at the hotel to prevent the screening. Meanwhile, co-producer and actor Pallavi Joshi said, 'I did not like the way my film was stopped. Is there freedom of expression in this state? As filmmakers and actors, we are not able to screen what we have made. What is the threat they are feeling? Such a thing did not happen even in Kashmir. Can we derive that the situation in Kashmir is better than in Bengal? See what is happening in Bengal today.' According to police sources, the director had sent an email requesting police permission for the trailer launch, but no permission had been granted for the event till now. Producer Abhishek Agarwal said, 'The film's trailer was supposed to be launched today, but it was stopped midway. At the time of Kashmir Files, nothing like this ever happened.' TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, 'Vivek Agnihotri is doing drama. In the name of films, he is doing politically motivated propaganda and trying to divide people. Why has he not made 'Gujarat Files' and shown what happened to Bilkis? Why have 'UP Files' or 'MP Files' or even 'Manipur Files' not been made? He has come to Bengal to malign Bengal; he should be thrown out of Bengal, but because there is democracy here, he is still here.' Further hitting out at Agnihotri, Ghosh said, 'How dare he take Satyajit Ray's name? He is coming to his land and trying to create a divide. Vivek Agnihotri is a puppet of the BJP who is constantly trying to malign Bengal and its people. He should show the development of Bengal that would be a model for the entire nation.' BJP Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar condemned the cancellation of the trailer launch event. Taking to social media, he said, 'In the land of the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, West Bengal has once again witnessed a shameful episode that shatters every limit of democratic decency… Renowned director @vivekagnihotri Ji had arrived in Kolkata to launch the trailer of his upcoming film 'The Bengal Files'. Shockingly, the event was abruptly cancelled, with a theatre chain openly admitting that it was acting under 'political pressure.' Undeterred, when he and his team attempted to hold the launch at a private hotel, that too was brazenly sabotaged! The director himself alleged that the electrical wires were deliberately cut, while the subservient Kolkata Police were disgracefully deployed to disrupt a private event.' In the land of the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, West Bengal has once again witnessed a shameful episode that shatters every limit of democratic decency. Words are simply inadequate to condemn what has just taken place. Renowned director @vivekagnihotri Ji had arrived in… — Dr. Sukanta Majumdar (@DrSukantaBJP) August 16, 2025 'This is not merely disgraceful – it is yet another chilling reminder of how Bengal today is being ruled under jungle-raj, anarchy, and authoritarian arrogance, intoxicated with the politics of appeasement.' 'I strongly and unequivocally condemn this despicable act. Today, not only Bengal but the entire nation has seen how a filmmaker and his team of artists were insulted and humiliated in broad daylight.' 'What exactly is @MamataOfficial so afraid of? Why is she resorting to such vindictive and dictatorial tactics? The people of Bengal have now seen the truth for themselves – there is no difference between Mamata Banerjee and Surahwardi.' Written and directed by Agnihotri, The Bengal Files features Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi. The film is scheduled for release on September 5.
