Gautam Gambhir's future as India head coach questioned: ‘3 series defeats in a row would be a problem for him'
All of these defeats have come with Gautam Gambhir as head coach and former England captain Mike Atherton feels that this would put the former India opener under pressure, even though he has also led India to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy. 'Well, they've lost two series in a row. They lost at home to New Zealand 3-0, and they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1. If they lose this series, then yeah, he's under pressure as a coach,' said Atherton on Sky Sports.
'India, with all their resources, their population strength, they're not a team that people are patient with. They're expected to win every time they walk onto the park. So three Test series defeats in a row would be a problem for him,' Atherton added.
India captain Shubman Gill was asked on the eve of the fifth Test if Gambhir's altercation with the pitch curator at the Oval was a reflection of the fact that the Indian head coach was feeling the pressure. Gill, however, brushed away that notion, stating that it was merely a response to the Indian team management not being allowed to take a look at the pitch from close proximity.
India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had also said earlier that Gambhir is not feeling any kind of pressure. 'He is not under pressure. The series has been competitive, and both teams have played well. The series opener and the third Test could have gone either way. All the matches went to the fifth day, and it has been a brilliant series. I haven't seen Gautam Gambhir under pressure from his playing days till now,' he said.

IND vs ENG: Chris Woakes ruled out of fifth Test due to shoulder injury, ‘set to play no further part' at Oval Test
England fast-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India due to a shoulder injury he endured during the first innings at the Oval in London. The England cricket board has announced this development on Friday ahead of Day 2. In a post on X, England Cricket wrote, 'Chris Woakes set to play no further part in the fifth Test. A further assessment will take place at the end of the series.' Woakes, who has been integral in England's bowling attack, landed awkwardly on his shoulder while chasing after the ball at the boundary line in the 57th over. The 36-year-old had to be taken off the field with his left shoulder wrapped in his sweater. Woakes' teammate Gus Atkinson provided an update, which England would be dreading as he said: 'It doesn't look great. I will be surprised if he takes any part in the game. It's a big shame when anyone gets injured. I'm hoping it's not too bad but whatever it is he'll get the full support from everyone,' said Atkinson after the day's play.' England have made four changes to their playing XI with captain Ben Stokes out injured. Besides their talismanic captain, the hosts have also rested Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Liam Dawson. In their place, England have named Jacob Bethell, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton and Gus Atkinson into the playing XI with Pope handed captaincy. Woakes' injury has also reignited the conversation around the injury replacements, as this has been a major talking point during this season after Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant also had to miss out due to a toe injury he picked up during the fourth Test. Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik is in favour of an injury replacement and said,' For the second time in this series, on day one of a Test match, an injury has happened where you get the feeling that the player couldn't participate in the Test match anymore,' Karthik said to Sky Sports. 'It begs the question that if it is a proper injury, like what we have noticed on the field with Woakes, maybe the team could ask for a replacement if the match referee feels it's okay,' he added.

Duleep Trophy: Shardul Thakur to lead star studded West Zone team
SHARDUL Thakur will lead the West Zone team for Duleep Trophy, the Zonal selection committee decided on Friday. In a star studded line-up which has Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan and Ruturaj Gaikwad, the selection committee preferred Mumbai's bowling all-arounder Thakur to lead the side. The reason for not naming Iyer as skipper was that the selection committee felt that he might be picked for the Asia Cup team which is scheduled to play from September 9 onward. The Duleep Trophy is scheduled to kick start from August 28 in Bengaluru. Thakur has been playing a vital role in Mumbai's Ranji success for the last few years. He has been contributing both with bat and ball. Over the last two seasons, where Mumbai has been bailed out from runs from lower-order, Thakur has had a lead role to play alongside Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani. The two also join Thakur in the West Zone squad that also has place for pacer Tushar Deshpande. Earlier, Iyer had expressed his availability to play in the Duleep Trophy. Iyer has played 14 Tests for India and scored one century to go with five fifties, but he hasn't played the longest format internationally since February 2024 against England. He was, however, an integral part of the Indian team that lifted the 50-overs Champions Trophy title in Dubai earlier this year. More recently, under Iyer's captaincy, Punjab Kings entered the final of the Indian Premier League's 2025 season, where they lost to the Royal Challengers of Bengaluru in Ahmedabad. Iyer wasn't picked for the Indian Test tour to England that is currently underway, as the selectors decided to go with Karun Nair, who had prolific returns in domestic cricket more recently. The 2025–26 domestic season will begin with the Duleep Trophy (August 28, 2025) and conclude with the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy (April 3, 2026). The Ranji Trophy season is set to begin from October 15, with Phase 1 going up until 19 November and Phase 2 of the season (Elite) extending from 22 January 2026 to 1 February. This season the Duleep Trophy returns to the zonal format. The squads are picked by the state selectors from respective zones. South Zone were the champions when the Duleep Trophy was held in the 2023-24 season. West Zone squad: Shardul Thakur (Capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Aarya Desai, Harvik Desai (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jaymeet Patel, Manan Hingrajia, Saurabh Nawale (wk), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Dharmendra Jadeja, Tushar Deshpande, Arzan Nagwaswala.

WATCH- Why Was Virat Kohli Crying In Bathroom? Yuzvendra Chahal Shockingly Reveals
Yuzvendra Chahal recently shared an emotional moment from the 2019 World Cup semifinal, revealing that he witnessed Virat Kohli and nearly every other Indian player crying in the bathrooms after the heartbreaking loss to New Zealand in Manchester. India, despite a strong bowling effort, fell short by 18 runs while chasing a target of 240 on the reserve day of the match. This was a major blow to Virat's captaincy as it ultimately proved to be the only ODI World Cup he capatined India in. Despite being the best team on paper, India not winning the world cup brought a lot of criticism for the team especially Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri. Speaking on the podcast Figuring Out With Raj Shamani, Chahal who played in that match recalled the emotional aftermath while discussing the differences between the leadership styles of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. When asked if he had ever seen Kohli cry, Chahal responded with a powerful memory. Yuzvendra Chahal - "I saw tears in Virat bhaiya's eyes after the 2019 semi-final loss and he was crying even in the bathroom" — OM. (@Badpatch18) August 1, 2025 'I love how Rohit bhaiya carries himself on the ground. He's a very good captain. With Virat bhaiya, it's the energy he brings, the same energy every day. It will only go up and never down. Same energy. Every day," Chahal said. Host Raj Shamani referenced the recent 2025 IPL final where Kohli was seen tearing up on live television after Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally clinched the title. In response, Chahal said, '2019 World Cup, I saw him crying in the bathroom. And then I was the last batter, when I was crossing him, he had tears in his eyes. In 2019, I saw everyone crying in the bathroom." Kohli had enjoyed a good World Cup campaign leading up to the semifinal but was dismissed early in that match, scoring just 1 run off 6 balls after being trapped LBW by Trent Boult. Reflecting on his own performance in the game, Chahal admitted it's a match he still regrets. Although he had contributed well throughout the tournament, he ended up being India's most expensive bowler in the semifinal, giving away 63 runs in his 10 overs and picking up the wicket of Kane Williamson. 'I could have done better,' Chahal said. Chahal in the podcast revealed everything from his sad days due to cheating allegations post divorce to the lock room talks in Indian dressing room. He was candid and honest in the podcast and fans are loving the hidden tales from the leggie.
