Indonesia's Prabowo in France as Macron's Bastille Day guest, eyes on Rafale, Scorpene
Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto is in France to attend the Bastille Day celebrations and both the countries want to turn the visit into a victory.
While Indonesia wants to portray Prabowo's visit, which also included engagements with the European Union (EU) leaders, as the president's rising international profile, France wants to capitalise on the visit to deepen the engagement with the country and lay groundwork for defence deals in the works.
Indonesia has signed a deal to buy 42 French Rafales and two French submarines. France wants Indonesia, the largest Southeast Asian economy, to buy more as the country faces challenges from China.

However, Indonesia is also seeking a middle ground of sorts in the confrontation with China. In November 2024, Indonesia and China signed a deal that analysts said implicitly recognised China's 'nine-dash line' and hence maritime territorial claims — the 'nine dash line' refer to nine dashes that China has unilaterally and arbitrarily drawn on the map to claim as much as 90 per cent of the South China Sea and its islands as sovereign Chinese territory.
France eyes defence deals with Indonesia
France wants to sell more Rafale fighter planes and Scorpene-class submarines to Indonesia.
In recent years, France has already signed deals with Indonesia for the sale of 42 Rafales, two submarines, and 13 long-range air surveillance radars from France's Thales.
In May, when French President Emmanuel Macron visited Indonesia, the two countries signed a preliminary defence agreement that could lead to new orders of French military equipment, including Rafales and Scorpene submarines.
'I am delighted that the letter of intent signed today could open up a new perspective with new orders for Rafales, Scorpenes, light frigates,' said Macron at the time.
Defence cooperation has underpinned the France-Indonesia relationship. Indonesia has been modernising its military capabilities and France has emerged as a key partner in this effort. The two nations have been enhancing collaboration in the development and acquisition of strategic weaponry.
A strategic realignment
France and Indonesia are also looking at a strategic realignment where both the countries seek partners outside of traditional power structures in the region.
Under its longstanding commitment to strategic autonomy, France has been foraying into the Indo-Pacific independently of the United States and has found a partner in Indonesia.

Similarly, for Prabowo, who has historical ties to France dating back to his military training, the visit to France represents an opportunity to diversify Indonesia's international partnerships beyond traditional powers.

'Europe has lot of opportunities'
Bharat Forge has a large US exposure and is in talks with American buyers after import duties were slapped on Indian exports. While it is hopeful of the issue getting resolved, it will eye opportunities in Europe if there is no resolution, the company's vice-chairman and joint MD Amit Kalyani tells TOI. Excerpts: How will the tariffs impact your business? The US auto sector accounts for about 35-40% of our sales. Over the years, because of our defence businesses and other businesses in the EU, we have reduced our share of the US and reduced the risk, but it still remains a very important market. We have very strong and entrenched relations with our customers in the US as we have been supplying them for 30 years. We need to work with the customers on how we navigate this challenge. Everyone understands the push & pull and we will work jointly with customers. In the near term, there will be some demand issues due to the overhang of tariffs but we don't know if it will exacerbate or get resolved; no one knows the impact on profit and demand. When it comes to Indian exports to the US, the larger sectors in the non-IT and non-pharma space, such as textiles and garments, shoes, gems & jewellery-which are extremely fragmented-and large employers will have bigger and faster impact. These are also sectors which are very price sensitive. How do you address this challenge? The challenge can also be a growth opportunity. After all, India has the ambition to grow and create opportunities for the 1.4 billion citizens of the country. We need to accelerate the pace of employment in the long run. There is a risk in the short to medium term. But India and the US are not enemies and issues should get resolved, otherwise India has to look at other opportunities, which may take time. The greatest opportunity would be to look at building infrastructure at a faster pace and speed up large capital expenditure, which will also create jobs and make India more competitive. As a business, we always deal with issues that are within our control and as a country too we need to do that. What is the demand outlook? The first quarter has been weak and the second quarter will be similar. It will also depend on the impact (of tariffs) and how things play out over the next 10-15 days. We expect the second half to be better. What happens if the trade talks with the US don't yield results? There are a lot of opportunities in Europe... FTAs are a good starting point for engagement. Stellantis looks to drive in 'affordable premium' cars
NEW DELHI: Stellantis, one of the world's top carmakers, will launch new petrol and electric cars in India, but does not plan to make investments under govt's revised EV incentive policy for local manufacturing. The company, which has invested Rs 11,000 crore in India and sells cars under the Citroen and Jeep brands, plans to drive in a series of new cars in the country over the coming years. It sold just 7,500 units last year in the domestic market as it starts to scale fledgling operations after deciding to discontinue the group's Fiat brand. Shailesh Hazela, MD & CEO of Stellantis in India, told TOI that the group is bullish on the India-EU FTA, which - when concluded - will help it introduce global models and technologies faster into India. "A trade agreement is always good for both the parties as they can leverage each other's strength... An India-EU FTA will work for both, as we can export more India-made cars and also bring in some of the products from global, test the market, and then focus on localising them if they work. Hazela said there are plans to get in new cars to India, and the effort will be to drive in "affordable premium" models which are focussed in the Rs 10-25 lakh price bracket.
