5 observations from SEC media days

USA Today6 days ago
SEC media days came to a close on Thursday with Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko finishing out the four-day event at the podium. It was a fun four days in Atlanta, where I was able to get a better feel for how SEC media feel about the Oklahoma Sooners, in addition to spending some time with the Sooners on Wednesday when they took the stage.
Media in attendance were treated to representatives from the Oklahoma contingent, including Brent Venables, John Mateer, R. Mason Thomas, and Robert Spears-Jennings. The group looked ready for the moment and were styling as they took their turn with the SEC media.
Here are five takeaways or observations from SEC media days.
1. QB1 cool, calm, collected
John Mateer had a notable crowd around him during SEC media days, and he wasn't phased by it in the least. It was his first conference media day appearance after coming from the Pac-12, which featured just Washington State and Oregon State last year. They didn't have a conference media day.
He presented a cool, calm, and collected demeanor, which isn't surprising given all of the things that former coaches and teammates said about him when he arrived at Oklahoma.
Having an even keel during SEC media days is one thing, but navigating the SEC shark-infested waters of the Gulf is another. But Mateer is no stranger to playing and performing under pressure. While a lot of his numbers came from the designed quarterback run game, a good bit of them also came when he was under pressure and forced to make a play on the fly.
2. Oklahoma Confident
You wouldn't expect anything else during talking season, but the Oklahoma contingent spoke confidently about the work they've put and aren't shying away from the expectations. Coming off of a 6-7 season, you'd think they might take a reserved approach, but the guys that were present at SEC media days know they have an opportunity to rewrite the narratives about OU Football this season.
3. Talk of the Town
There might not be a team that the general media believes will exceed expectations more than the Oklahoma Sooners. From Digital Drive (formerly Radio Row), a number of SEC media members could be overheard wanting to buy stock in the Oklahoma Sooners. Well, they may want to do it sooner rather than later.
4. Schedule
Yes, the schedule is tough. Exactly how tough, nobody knows. Based on the metrics, that take into account recent success on the field and on the recruiting trail, the Oklahoma Sooners may have a daunting slate. But what those numbers don't always take into account are the losses each team endured this offseason.
But it's the SEC. Every schedule is going to be tough. It's just some are tougher than others. And while Oklahoma will have a tough slate, especially that stretch of games that starts from the Red River Showdown and runs to the end of the season, the Sooners will also be a tough out every week.
This year, the SEC is going to see why Oklahoma ran the Big 12 for two decades.
5. Manning Mania
There wasn't a bigger crowd for any one player than the one Texas quarterback Arch Manning received. He's arguably the biggest name in college football ahead of the 2025 season. Some of the hype is deserved. He's a talented former five-star quarterback who has the tools to, at some point in his career, be among the best quarterbacks in college football.
However, there's hesitation from many SEC media outlets to crown him at this point. It's not that he can't be a Heisman contender, and he might even be this year, but analysts want to see him prove it on the field.
The good news for everyone. Talking season is behind us, and that means we're less than a month and a half away from the start of the 2025 college football season.

'We know what our team is capable of': Brent Venables expects big things from Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners were predicted to finish in 10th place in the SEC this year by the media at last week's SEC media days. Obviously, if that were to come true, that simply isn't good enough at OU. The prediction makes sense on the surface. Oklahoma went 2-6 in the SEC last year, on its way to a 6-7 overall record. A solid defense was hung out to dry by a poor offense, and the Sooners dealt with wholesale injuries on their way to a bad year. Looking closer, OU has made plenty of changes this offseason that have them confident heading into this year. Count head coach Brent Venables among those who think this year's team is capable of more. Venables joined offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and co-defensive coordinator Todd Bates at the annual OU Football Coaches Luncheon on Thursday, and he was asked about the Sooners being picked to finish 10th in the conference. According to Jesse Crittenden, who covers Oklahoma for OUInsider, Venables has confidence as the 2025 season approaches. 'We've got a lot to prove, and I like that," Venables said. "We know what our team is capable of. There's no game on our schedule that we can't win.' "I missed the press conference where everybody was praising us," Venables said via The Oklahoman's Colton Sulley, "and justifiably so, we have a lot to prove. ... Our plan is to compete for an SEC championship." The Sooners face one of the nation's toughest schedules in 2025, and will have new play-callers on both sides of the ball for the second-straight season. Arbuckle takes the reins on offense, while Venables himself will juggle his head coaching duties with defensive play-calling duties. Regardless of the challenging schedule and all the "new" in Norman, there's plenty of belief inside the Switzer Center that 2025 will be different from 2024. Venables, his staff, and his players believe that Oklahoma will return to its winning ways this season. Texas tops college football valuation rankings

At $2.38 billion, the University of Texas' football program is the most valuable, according to estimations by The Athletic. Why it matters: NCAA teams aren't for sale yet, but name, image and likeness (NIL) has led more to mirror themselves like professional clubs. State of play: The Athletic ranked teams in the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 by how much money they'd hypothetically sell for on the open market. Prestige, championships, facility renovations, population trends and realignment scenarios were all factored into the rankings. Context: The New York Times-owned sports publication took real-life sales examples across pro sports to determine what each program is worth. It used NFL and NBA sales to calculate ratios in the SEC and Big Ten, and the MLB and NHL were the benchmarks for ACC and Big 12 programs. What they're saying: "The Longhorns routinely lead the country in revenue and were the only team to top $200 million in the most recent financial reports," The Athletic's Matt Baker wrote. "The Longhorns haven't won a national title since 2005 but made the College Football Playoff semifinals each of the past two seasons and are among this preseason's top championship contenders."

Social media reacts to 2027 4-star quarterback Teddy Jarrard committing to Notre Dame

Notre Dame football got a commitment from its quarterback of the future on Thursday afternoon, as 2027 Georgia 4-star Teddy Jarrard opted for the Blue and Gold. The Irish have the luxury of looking ahead, as its 2026 class is virtually full with twenty-six current commitments. There are now three verbals in the 2027 cycle, one each on offense, defense and special teams. It's a fantastic base to work off, and with the most important player checked off, Notre Dame's coach staff can now turn its focus to the other positions in the class. It was a big development for the Irish, and social media acted accordingly. There were numerous post about how huge this was for Notre Dame, and check out the best reactions to Jarrard committing below. Massive recruiting win With Jarrard's commitment, there are now just a handful of top quarterbacks off the board in the 2027 cycle, which gives each of those teams, including Notre Dame a leg up no the remaining prospects in the class. The Irish were able to go into SEC enemy territory and pull out a recruiting win, which not many teams are able to do. Jarrard's stock set to rise? We've all seen plenty of recruits getting an SEC-bump, but there could be a significant rise in the rankings in the near future for Jarrard. He's done extremely well in the camp circuit this spring and summer, and many have taken notice. Top-50 overall player according to Tom Lemming One of the original recruiting guru's, Lemming has seen it all and if he says that Jarrad is a top-50 prospect, then most likely he is. While his current recruiting ranking doesn't reflect that, like Power said above, a significant jump could be in the works. Lemming gives a great breakdown of his skill set, and one that should be getting Notre Dame fans very excited. An interesting comparison I haven't gotten a chance to take a dive into Jarrard's film, which I will do tonight, but comparing him to CJ Carr is very interesting. We haven't seen any of the expected Irish starting quarterback at this level, but we are talking about a guy that should be starting in year-two in the program. I don't think many would be complaining if that was the case with Jarrard as well. The gamble payed off for Notre Dame Many, including myself, were concerned that Notre Dame had only offered two quarterback in 2027, but all of us worriers were proven wrong. You just need one to commit, and the Irish got a great one in Jarrard. Beating out multiple other College Football Playoff teams is icing on the cake. The traits are elite There is one thing that I've noticed when evaluating high school quarterback prospects is that if they are accurate at that level, they will be at the next. It's one of the hardest aspects of the position to teach, and if a player shows those traits early on, most likely they aren't going anywhere. Jarrard completing over 70% of his attempts at a sophomore is exceptional, and we can expect the same when he arrives in South Bend. The moment Jarrard went Irish A magical moment for Jarrard and Notre Dame, as the two matched up extremely well and will be together in the coming seasons. It's the culmination of many years of hard work, and the recruits should enjoy the moment, which is exactly what happened.
