Real Madrid's Mbappe a doubt for Al Hilal clash at Club World Cup
Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe is a doubt for the club's opening Club World Cup match against Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal after missing training on Tuesday due to illness.
The club said Mbappe had been suffering from a fever, with newly-appointed manager Xabi Alonso, who will make his debut in the dugout in Wednesday's match, adding that a decision on his participation would be made in the morning.
'Kylian was a bit better this morning, but he was not fully fit, so we thought it would be best for him to skip training. Let's see how it evolves, and we'll make a last-minute decision,' Alonso told a news conference on the eve of the clash at the Hard Rock Stadium.
The potential absence of Mbappe leaves Alonso facing a selection dilemma as the French player is currently the only recognised centre-forward in the squad.
Brazilian teenager Endrick, who could have provided an alternative, was left out of the travelling party following a leg muscle injury sustained during Real's La Liga fixture at Sevilla last month.
Mbappe has been instrumental for Real Madrid this season, scoring 31 La Liga goals since his high-profile summer move from Paris St Germain.
Regardless of Mbappe's potential absence, Alonso insisted his team would need to press 'like a unit'.
'Defensive work is important. It's one of the tasks we need to address in the short term, and in the long term, it will be decisive for our success,' the Spaniard said.
Real Madrid enter the tournament as one of the favourites, having dominated European football over the last decade, winning five of the last 10 Champions League titles.
Al Hilal secured their place in the competition by triumphing in the AFC Champions League in 2021, and will look to capitalise on any weakness in Madrid's lineup.
Real and Al-Hilal were drawn in Group F with Mexican side Pachuca and RB Salzburg of Austria.

Ramos scores as Mexico's Monterrey hold Inter Milan 1-1 in Club World Cup
Sergio Ramos rolled back the years to score a brilliant header as Monterrey held Inter Milan to a 1-1 draw in their FIFA Club World Cup clash at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, United States. The former Spain and Real Madrid defender towered above the Inter defenders to find the back of the net and give his Mexican club a lead in the 25th minute of their Group E fixture, much to the delight of the thousands of Monterrey fans gathered at the famous venue in Southern California on Tuesday. European giants Inter levelled the scoreline in the 42nd minute, as Lautaro Martinez tapped in from close range from a Carlos Augusto pass in a superbly crafted team goal. However, it was Ramos's goal and ensuing celebrations – both by the player and the Monterrey fans – that stole the limelight on the fourth day of the club competition. 'There is always joy to contribute to the team by scoring, but if we can get points, that's even better,' the Monterrey captain said after the match. 'We played very well as a team. Of course, football showcases the goal, but we're here to share this experience.' Both sides had plenty of opportunities to take the lead in the second half but missed their chances, with a Martinez strike being called offside in the 68th minute. It was a hard-fought draw for Inter, who lost the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on May 31 and welcomed new manager Cristian Chivu. According to the 39-year-old Ramos, his team lacked the energy in the final moments of the game. 'For most of this match, we created quite a few chances, but at this moment, we don't have much energy,' he said. Monterrey and Inter have one point apiece in the group led by River Plate, who beat Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 in the earlier game in Seattle. Goals from Facundo Colidio (12 minutes), Sebastian Driussi (48 minutes) and Maximiliano Meza (73 minutes) helped the Argentinian club beat their Japanese opponents with ease, but they lost their forward to an ankle injury while scoring the second goal. A successfully converted 58th-minute penalty from Yusuke Matsuo brought Urawa back into the game momentarily, but Meza's goal 15 minutes later consolidated River Plate's lead again. On the second match day for the group on Saturday, Inter take on Urawa, and Monterrey face River Plate. In the Group F fixtures on Tuesday, Brazilian Serie A side Fluminense held German club Borussia Dortmund to a goalless draw at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, while Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa beat South Korean side Ulsan HD 1-0 in Orlando, Florida. Iqraam Rayners scored in the 36th minute for Mamelodi, who now lead Group F with three points. Dortmund and Fluminense have one point each.

Chelsea beat LAFC 2-0, Benfica in 2-2 draw with Boca Juniors
PA Media/dpa London Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez were on target as Chelsea started their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over LAFC in front of a stadium which was less than a third full in Atlanta. The players walked out at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which holds a capacity of 71,000, with only 22,137 fans in attendance and the entire upper tier of the arena was completely vacant. Chelsea played in front of over 70,000 fans at the same venue against Newcastle in the Premier League's Summer Series just a couple of years ago but deserted seats were the common theme this time as Enzo Maresca's side claimed the first three points of their campaign. Neto opened Chelsea's account just after the half-hour mark to give the Blues a well-deserved lead heading into the half-time break. Chelsea were made to work hard for their second goal, with Liam Delap introduced after the break and he supplied fellow substitute Fernandez with the second to seal the victory 11 minutes from time. Former Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris was brought into action early on to deny Nicolas Jackson, who forced a snapshot on target in tight space from inside the area. Chelsea dominated possession and were beginning to trap LAFC closer to their own goal. Jackson did well to pick out Noni Madueke who forced another save from Lloris. The Conference League winners broke the deadlock in the 34th minute. Neto broke the offside trap and latched onto Jackson's magnificent pass and the Portugal international cut the ball back in and fired into the bottom corner. LAFC chances were few and far between in the first period but Denis Bouanga's cross caused problems for Robert Sanchez, who flapped at the delivery and sent it behind for a corner. The American side did not want to back down to Chelsea though, and substitute David Martinez made an impact off the bench. His curling strike looked to have Sanchez scrambling but former Blues forward Olivier Giroud accidentally got himself in the way of the effort. Chelsea almost doubled their advantage after the interval, Neto's teasing cross found Jackson who headed on target but Timothy Tillman proved to be the saviour on the line to keep the deficit at one. New signing Delap was introduced for his Chelsea debut in the 63rd minute and instantly made an impact. He almost made a second with his dazzling footwork on the byline but his pass into the box was snuffed out. Chelsea continued to probe in search of a two-goal cushion and they found it in the 79th minute - Delap got the assist as he hung a ball into the middle of the box and Fernandez was waiting to tap home. Benfica recovered from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors in a fiery Group C encounter. Both sides finished with 10 men at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium after the video assistant referee upgraded a yellow card shown to Benfica's Andrea Belotti and Boca's Jorge Figal was shown a straight red for an aggressive challenge late on. Miguel Merentiel's close-range finish gave Boca a 21st-minute lead and Rodrigo Battaglia doubled the Argentinean side's advantage six minutes later with a header at the back post. Angel di Maria pulled one back from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time after Nicolas Otamendi was fouled at a corner. Belotti's dismissal left the Portuguese outfit facing an uphill task but it was Argentina defender Otamendi who rescued a point with a towering header from Orkun Kokcu's corner. In Monday's late game, Flamengo secured a 2-0 win over Esperance. Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo were on target for the Brazilian outfit.
