Sungai Korok tragedy: JHEAIK steps up surveillance at burial site to prevent un-Islamic practices
Members of the At-Taqwa Mosque committee and residents of Kampung Bohor Karang visited the graves of the six family members on Thursday.
ALOR SETAR – The Kedah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIK) has taken proactive steps to monitor the gravesite of six family members who tragically lost their lives in the recent Sungai Korok incident.
The move aims to prevent any superstitious or un-Islamic practices at the burial site.
This decision comes in response to concerns raised by local residents regarding unusual and suspicious activities observed at the cemetery.
Its director, Datuk Abd Ghani Zainudin, confirmed that officers have been assigned to carry out ongoing surveillance at the Kampung Bohor Karang Muslim Cemetery in Jerlun.
'We have not placed any ropes or physical barriers around the burial site, but monitoring is ongoing from time to time.
'Action will be taken if there is clear evidence of practices that go against Islamic principles,' he said when contacted on Thursday.
He also urged the public to refrain from engaging in superstitious or irrational activities, and called on local mosques to play an active role in preventing any acts that contradict Islamic beliefs at the cemetery.
Meanwhile, the At-Taqwa Mosque secretary Mhd Shukri Hassan, confirmed that they have received instructions from JHEAIK to monitor the site and have also appealed to the local community to assist in the effort.
He emphasised that the initiative aims to prevent a repeat of incidents such as the alleged act of someone collecting grave soil from the grave of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, a student from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) who died in an accident in Gerik.
'The mosque does not prohibit the public from visiting the graves, but we stress that no acts of shirk (idolatry) or un-Islamic rituals should be carried out.
'There's no issue with visiting graves, but don't do things that go against the faith. Taking grave soil or performing extreme rituals is not acceptable. We will report such activities to the authorities,' he said.
The late Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak's brother, Mohamad Adlan Solehin, 24, also expressed the family's hope that the public would respect the sanctity of the burial site.
He added that the family understands that many are visiting out of sympathy and to offer prayers for the deceased.
'There's no problem with visiting the graves. But please don't do anything inappropriate. As the family, we feel uncomfortable when unusual or strange things happen at the gravesite,' he said.
Previously, it was reported that a couple, Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, and Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31 along with their four children, Putra Rayyan, 9; Hawa Adriana, 8; Annayla Humaira, 7 and their six-month-old baby boy, Tuah Haydar, tragically died when their car skidded into Sungai Korok in the early hours of last Saturday. 40 held in Esscom's operation in Tawau, Kalabakan
Published on: Tuesday, July 29, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 29, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Among those detained during the integrated operation. TAWAU: A total of 40 individuals were arrested during a three-day integrated operation in the Tawau and Kalabakan districts, which concluded last Saturday. The joint operation, led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), targeted illegal immigrants, drug-related activities, smuggling, and various other offences. Of those detained, 21 were illegal immigrants from the Philippines and Indonesia. They have since been handed over to the Immigration Department in Tawau for further action under Sections 15(1)(c) and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos said the operation, a collaboration involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Armed Forces (ATM), Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), and other federal, state, and local agencies, aimed to restore public order and enforce laws across the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone). 'Raids were carried out at the old Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Jetty, Road Check Point (RCP) Kalabakan, and several suburban settlements and villages known for illegal activity,' he said in a statement on Monday. The remaining 19 detainees included two suspected drug dealers, who were brought to Tawau District Police Headquarters for urine screening under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Poisons Act 1952. The authorities also seized 125.64 grammes of syabu, 41 bottles of ketum juice (1.5 litres each), and RM950 in cash. Enforcement personnel inspected 146 individuals, 26 premises and three vehicles. Several violations were identified, including illegal electricity connections in settlements, which caused an about RM750,000 in losses to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB). Action was taken under Section 61(3) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024. The operation also saw the issuance of 35 traffic summonses and two vehicle inspection notices under the Road Transport Act 1987 by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and traffic police. Victor said the operation was part of Op Sanggah Esscom, a continuous nationwide effort to bolster existing enforcement by PDRM, ATM and APMM. 'Esscom remains committed to our principle of 'No Day Without Operation' to prevent foreign criminal elements from threatening the peace in Eastern Sabah,' he added. He also thanked all 254 personnel involved in the operation and urged the public to continue reporting security-related incidents in Esszone by contacting the Esscom Operations Centre at 089-863181 or via WhatsApp at 011-63311072. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Three nabbed in RM4.7mil cockfight raid in Sabah
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have busted a major illegal cockfighting syndicate in Papar, Sabah, arresting three men and seizing nearly 1,000 fighting cocks along with equipment valued at RM4.7 million. The raid took place on July 25 at an unnumbered lot in Kampung Kambizaan, Jalan Kayau Kambizaan. Those arrested include a local Chinese man, an Indonesian, and a Filipino, aged between 38 and 59. "This operation was launched to curb the illegal rearing of fighting cocks from neighbouring countries and to combat gambling activities linked to cockfighting in Sabah," Federal Police Management Department director Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said in a statement yesterday. The joint raid uncovered 936 live fighting cocks believed to be of Philippine breed, along with 30 iron cages and 107 chicken tagging irons. The raid involved personnel from the Papa district Criminal Investigations Department, the 16th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF), Kota Kinabalu Veterinary Services Department, and the Papar District Council. Azmi said the three suspects were believed to be illegally importing and training fighting cocks for illegal cockfighting events, which often involve high-stakes gambling. Among the seized items were five boxes and two bottles of vitamins, a paper bag containing Terumo syringes, a box of 100 Agani needles, and a plastic bag filled with Terumo U-100 insulin — tools commonly used for animal doping. "The total estimated value of the seizure was RM4,684,825.20," Azmi said. Terumo is a brand known for medical syringes and needles often used in veterinary and human healthcare. The suspects are being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Animal Enactment 2015 for importing animals without a valid licence issued by the Veterinary Department. Azmi urged the public to abide by all laws and report any suspicious activities that may threaten public safety and order. From Jan 1 to July 27 July this year, the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) conducted 179 raids nationwide, resulting in 314 arrests. The offences included smuggling of untaxed goods, misappropriation of controlled and subsidised items, sale of imitation weapons, wildlife trafficking, and e-waste operations. The total estimated value of seizures during this period stands at RM550.95 million.
