Bharat Mata Portrait At Kerala Raj Bhavan Sparks Row, Minister Skips Event

Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday said there would be no compromise on the presence of Bharat Mata's portrait at the Raj Bhavan.
His statement came after Kerala Agriculture Minister P Prasad boycotted a World Environment Day celebration, jointly organised by the state and the Raj Bhavan, following reports that officials at the Governor's office had allegedly insisted on displaying an image of Bharat Mata, commonly used in RSS shakhas, at the event.
The statement, quoting the Governor's speech at the Raj Bhavan during World Environment Day celebrations, said the agriculture minister had initially requested that the event be held at the Raj Bhavan.
"The Governor had gladly granted permission. However, when the minister insisted that the portrait of Bharat Mata on the stage be removed, the Governor had to turn down the request. Following this, the minister boycotted the event.
"He was expected to attend not only the morning session but also the evening Environment Day celebrations, in Raj Bhavan, but unfortunately, he abstained from both," it said.
In the statement, the Raj Bhavan said the Governor pointed out that from times immemorial, India has a tradition of worshipping and protecting trees, water, and air.

"He added that some present day 'isms' are demanding the abandonment of this tradition," it said.
Governor Arlekar stressed that real environment protection is possible only by upholding our traditions and living a life true to it.
Mr Prasad, who boycotted the event, said that the state government respects Bharat Mata, but using an image commonly associated with RSS shakhas for an official function at Raj Bhavan is unconstitutional.
"The programme agenda was prepared by Raj Bhavan, and we accepted it. But yesterday (Wednesday) evening, they suddenly added a new item -- paying floral tributes to the portrait of Bharat Mata. This goes against constitutional norms, and that picture is widely used by the RSS," Mr Prasad told PTI Videos.
He said the Raj Bhavan, which hosts a constitutional office, should not have used an image that is used exclusively by a particular organisation. "So we changed the venue of the programme and conducted it in the Durbar Hall inside the Secretariat," Mr Prasad said.
Officials said the intervention from Raj Bhavan came at the last minute, prompting the Agriculture Department to relocate the function. The Agriculture Department's Environment Day celebration was later held at the Secretariat premises at 11 am on Thursday.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said that access to temples, water bodies, and cremation grounds should be equal for all communities. He emphasised that society must move beyond caste-based inequalities to build a more inclusive India. Addressing over 400 volunteers during the regional 'Karyakarta Vikas Varg' camp at Deendayal Upadhyaya School in Nawabganj, Kanpur, Bhagwat said: 'The RSS's core aim is character-building, and that individuals must recognise their responsibilities not only to their families but also to the wider society, the nation, and humanity.' Stressing that the Sangh has grown by deepening its roots in society, the RSS chief said the centenary year is a time to expand its work. The RSS is focusing on the 'Panch Parivartan' , which includes building a socially responsible, environmentally conscious and united society, free from divisions. Bhagwat urged all volunteers to help carry RSS literature to every household, promote value-based living, and strengthen familial bonds. 'Every Hindu home should be rooted in values, so that the Sanatan tradition may thrive again,' he said. Earlier in the day, Bhagwat attended the morning 'shakha' at the training camp and later met senior functionaries, including pracharaks, sanghchalaks, sah-pracharaks, and prachar pramukhs. Separate discussions were also held with regional office-bearers. The RSS chief also highlighted the need to increase 'shakhas' in both urban and rural areas and encouraged provincial units to take responsibility for this expansion. Bhagwat, who arrived in Kanpur on Saturday afternoon, will be in the city till June 10. RSS's second-in-command, Dattatreya Hosabale, had addressed the same camp for two days prior to Bhagwat's arrival. Another training camp is being held simultaneously at Meharban Singh ka Purwa, a known Samajwadi Party stronghold that has lately aligned with the BJP. In his Sunday address, Bhagwat also focused on service initiatives in urban slums and urged volunteers to adapt their work according to local needs and conditions.

A senior leader says while it is true that general council has to be held in the presence of the party founder and its affairs conducted under his guidance, it is not binding on the general council to accept his guidance or decisions. 'The president continues to have the powers to appoint office bearers, which makes up the general council. Ultimately, the general council can reject his guidance. This is perhaps why Doctor Ayya began removing and re-appointing district president, secretaries and other office bearers. But, I don't think he (Dr. Ramadoss) has the powers to do it,' he added.

Congress MP Surjewala says RSS
Jhajjar (Haryana) [India], June 8 (ANI): Congress MP Randeep Surjewala on Sunday, alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had aligning with the British during India's freedom struggle and opposing the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Speaking to reporters here, Surjewala said, 'RSS never participated in the country's freedom struggle. They were with the British... Crores of people in this country contributed to the freedom struggle, and their leader was Mahatma Gandhi. I know RSS hates Mahatma Gandhi and worships Nathuram Godse.' He further framed the current political discourse as a clash of ideologies, stating, 'In this country, there is a battle between the ideologies of Godse and Gandhi. On one side, there is the ideology of Gandhi, which created India. On the other hand, there is an ideology of Godse who wants to divide the whole country based on regionalism, caste, and religion.' His remark came after RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasised the collective nature of India's freedom struggle, stating that the country's independence was the result of widespread efforts beginning with the 1857 uprising, and not the achievement of any single individual. Addressing a book release event in Nagpur as the chief guest, Bhagwat said, 'There is always a debate about due to whose efforts the country attained independence. But the reality is that this independence didn't come about due to just one individual. Efforts for this started in 1857, and the fire ignited everywhere; after that, the fire never died down. The efforts continued, and with everyone's collective efforts, we attained independence.' Explaining the importance of collective thought and construction, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said, 'The direction of the Sangh (RSS) is decided by collective thought, the work of the Sangh is not the work of one or two people, the Sangh whatever one does and whatever one says, it is a collective decision.' Earlier on June 5, the RSS chief strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and lauded the Indian Army's swift and effective response while urging all political forces to maintain the spirit of unity that emerged in its aftermath.
