Tate Modern turns 25: Prestigious UK museum marks occasion with series of events this weekend
In the late 1990s, when the rather unassuming Bankside Power Station building — located across the Thames from St Paul's Cathedral in London — was selected as the future home of Tate Modern, few in the art world could have anticipated that the museum would rise to become one of the most visited and acclaimed institutions of modern and contemporary art worldwide.
One of the most visited museums in the world, recording over 4.6 million visitors in 2024, this weekend marks 25 years of the institution. 'It's hard to imagine London without Tate Modern, even though it's only 25 years old. In that short time, it has transformed London's cultural landscape – cementing our city's status as a global art capital, commissioning and celebrating emerging voices alongside world-renowned artists, and inspiring Londoners while welcoming millions of visitors from around the world,' stated Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, in a release.
Marking the 25th anniversary, meanwhile, there will be a series of events this weekend. Welcoming visitors in will be artist Louise Bourgeois's iconic steel spider Maman, standing 10 metres high in the Turbine Hall, where it was first unveiled 25 years ago at the inauguration of the museum. Twenty-five more works of famed artists, including Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Monster Chetwynd and Pipilotti Rist, will also lead them into the museum galleries.
While live tarot readings will take place at Meschac Gaba's Museum of Contemporary African Art, the weekend will also see performances by artists such as Abbas Zahedi, Lawrence Lek, María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Maxime Jean-Baptiste.
Several panel discussions will be held, as well as artist talks by Nalini Malani and Robert Zhao Renhui.
The several ongoing exhibitions at the venue, meanwhile, include 'Leigh Bowery!' which will explore how the Australian performer influenced art, fashion and pop culture, and the exhibition 'The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh' that invites visitors to explore works that question notions of home, memory and identity. 'Anthony McCall: Solid Light' presents an immersive environment with projecting beams of light creating ever-changing sculptures.
Khan notes in the release: 'The 25th Birthday Weekender is a fantastic way to celebrate Tate's extraordinary contribution to our city, as we continue working to build a better, more vibrant London for everyone.'

‘Finally became pooja paath type': Virat Kohli's lookalike in Odisha temple distributing prasad stuns internet
A video from the Ananta Vasudev Temple in Bhubaneswar, Odisha is making waves online — not for its spiritual setting but because of a surprising lookalike moment. A man serving prasad at the temple has caught the attention of cricket fans for his uncanny resemblance to Team India's star batter, Virat Kohli. Also read: 'Iss saal RCB jeet jaye toh …': X post backfires for Vijay Mallya as internet revives 'return to India' chant The now-viral video was reshared by Sunil the Cricketer on X (formerly Twitter) and has already been viewed more than a million times. The video was originally shared by food vlogger Pratham Arora on his YouTube channel. The video shows a temple-goer filming the surroundings while waiting to receive prasad. As the camera focuses on the man distributing it, viewers were taken aback by his appearance — a traditional dhoti, moustache, and facial features that closely resemble Kohli. The caption read: 'I am convincing myself that person is not Virat Kohli.' And just like that, the internet took over. Social media users couldn't get enough of the man's resemblance to the cricketer, and the comments section quickly filled with reactions. One user quipped, 'Accha so Kohli never left for the UK instead he started serving the mandir.' Another compared him to a popular internet personality, saying, 'He actually looks more like Satish Ray who has put on weight and facial hair.' Some added their own twist of humour. 'What bro same same but different?' wrote one user, while another joked, 'Arre Waah Puri main Virat post retirement.' A user wrote, 'Bro finally became the pooja path type.' One added, 'He is judwaa of Virat Kohli.' Another added, 'But bhai aaj toh RCB ka match tha?' Hugh Jackman 'Extremely Disappointed' With Ex-Wife Deborra-Lee Furness For 'Trashing Him' Post Divorce Filing: Report
Hugh Jackman is reportedly 'extremely disappointed' with his estranged wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, after she made pointed remarks about their separation. The couple, who announced their split in September 2023 after 27 years of marriage, had reportedly agreed to keep things civil in public. In a new statement to the Daily Mail, Furness referred to their separation as a 'traumatic journey of betrayal' and called it 'a profound wound that cuts deep.' Her words have reportedly left Jackman feeling blindsided, with sources saying he believed they had an understanding not to speak negatively about one another in the press. How Hugh Jackman reacted 'Hugh was extremely disappointed after reading what his ex had said,' an insider told Daily Mail. 'There was no stipulation that she could not address this but there was an unwritten understanding that she would not trash him to the press. She got around this by not naming him, instead focusing on how she felt.' Jackman was also reportedly hurt because he had agreed to all of Furness' divorce requests, including financial terms, in hopes of keeping the process amicable. 'Hugh knows that he cannot change anything, and it is unfortunate that Deb feels the way she did,' the source said. Deborra-Lee Furness officially filed for divorce on May 23, nearly two years after the couple announced their separation. She spoke about her emotional journey, sharing sympathy for those who have experienced "betrayal" and described it as a deep and painful wound. Reports claim their marriage began to strain during the COVID-19 pandemic. Around the same time, Jackman formed a close bond with his Broadway costar Sutton Foster during their run of The Music Man in 2022. Sources told Daily Mail that Furness believed Jackman was having an 'emotional affair,' although neither Jackman nor Foster has commented on the speculation. Furness and Jackman had also struggled to finalize their divorce due to disagreements over asset division. 'Deborra-Lee feels entitled to more money than Hugh is willing to offer,' a source said earlier this year. The dispute was reportedly influenced by suspicions surrounding Jackman's connection with Foster. The couple met in 1995 on the set of the Australian TV show Correlli. They married in 1996 and went on to adopt two children, son Oscar, now 24, and daughter Ava, now 19. Jackman had once said he knew they were meant to be together just two weeks after meeting.

Deborra-Lee Furness has filed for divorce from her estranged husband, Hugh Jackman, two years after announcing their separation. The reports of the couple splitting after 30 years of marriage have been making the rounds on the internet. The Deadpool & Wolverine star's close friend, Gus Worland, revealed that the duo had been facing challenges in their union during the past few years. Worland shares a strong bond with Jackman, and the friends have known each other since childhood. While making an appearance on the Ben Fordham Live show, the TV personality claimed that no one wants to go through something as painful, especially in public. Gus' statement came after Furness talked about her 'traumatic journey of betrayal' and claimed the divorce to be a 'wound that cuts deep.' Gus Worland's reaction to Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness' divorce In conversation with the podcast host, Worland shared, 'No one wants anyone to go through what they've been through, and, of course, they go through everything publicly because of the type of people and the fame that they have.' He further added, 'One thing that I've been really strict on, or disciplined on, is to let them do what they've had to do. I was over in New York with [Jackman] just last month and he's fine. He is going along well. He's moving on with his life and I hope that Deb does as well.' Having known each other for so long, Worland and the Logan star have been godparents to each other's first child. Jackman, who had been married to the Australian actress for three decades, shares two kids with her, Oscar and Ava. Further in his talks on the show, the TV star shared that the couple had been together for a really long time. He went on to state, 'I just go to the kids and go, 'What can we do to make sure that they're going to get through this as well as possible?'' Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness announced their separation in September 2023, soon after their Met Gala appearance in May of the same year.
