LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney's live-action remake of the animated classic Lilo & Stitch topped box office charts in the United States and Canada with $183 million in ticket sales over the U.S. Memorial Day weekend, according to estimates released on Monday.
"Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," starring Tom Cruise, was on pace to bring in $77.5 million from Friday through Monday, distributor Paramount Global said.
Total sales for all films are expected to set a record for the Memorial Day weekend, box office analysts said. The previous record of $314.3 million was established in 2013, when the sixth Fast & Furious movie debuted.

Mission: Impossible, the eighth installment in Cruise's action franchise, racked up $205.5 million around the world. REUTERS

My Perfect Weekend with singer-host Daphne Khoo
Singer-host Daphne Khoo during an arts and craft session (left) with her friends, and with her family at West Coast Park (right). PHOTOS: COURTESY OF DAPHNE KHOO Who: Daphne Khoo, 38, also known as Haneri Milliona, is a Singaporean singer and host. The former Kiss92 radio DJ has curated music and artists for a new Saturday afternoon series at bar and club Rasa Space called Sync, which started on May 24. Each week features DJ sets, live performances and spontaneous collaborations across house, R&B, nu-disco, funk and more. The series is designed as both a platform and a gathering space: social, experimental and welcoming. It is also family-friendly, with a kid-friendly zone, and runs from 2 to 7pm. Khoo, who is single, was a contestant on the first season of reality singing contest Singapore Idol (2004 to 2009) and has released an album, Desperate (2007), as well as a number of singles, including Y Didn't You Say So in 2002. 'I try my best to get extra sleep over the weekends. It is close to impossible because I'm always doing something. But weekends are the time when I catch up on sleep and see my friends and family. One of my most beautiful weekends was when I went with my family to West Coast Park. We flew a kite together, my dog ran around and my sister's eight-year-old daughter was climbing this massive structure. That moment was significant to me because I love her very much. I've watched her grow up, which is an amazing honour and blessing. I was climbing with her, and we had a little heart-to-heart talk while we were at it. It was just a perfect bonding time. Any time I get to spend quality time with friends and family over the weekend, that's something that I cherish very much. Over the weekends, I spend a lot of time rearranging my room to make it my safe space. My room is modular, so if I want to do something, I can move things around easily. Sometimes, I just lie down and watch movies on the projector on the ceiling. Whenever I see myself happy and comfortable, I picture myself in my room. I am satisfied with what it feels like and looks like to me, and I think that's important because it helps me spend time alone. To be honest, I am terrible at taking downtime. But I am lucky to have friends who will remind me and book me to do nothing, like to have 'nothing' days when we basically sit around, watch television shows and talk. Doing nothing has been life-changing in my adulthood. It has given me better work-life balance. Sunday is my day to hang out with friends. We usually try to do something sporty together or an activity. We're in a pickleball phase and so is the rest of the world. Sometimes, we just go to the gym together or go bowling.' Malaysian entrepreneur apologises for spending only $300k on daughter's 11th birthday
Ms Farhana Zahra (left) also gave her 11-year-old daughter an Apple computer, a Rolex watch and a Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). PHOTOS: SCREENGRABS FROM FARHANAZAHRA91/TIKTOK A Malaysian entrepreneur has come under fire after revealing that she spent RM1 million (S$303,700) to throw a lavish birthday for her 11-year-old daughter, and apologised for not spending more. Besides a celebration that featured balloons and cakes, Ms Farhana Zahra, who runs a beauty and dietary supplement business, also gave her daughter extravagant gifts. Among them were an Apple computer, a Rolex watch and a Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). 'Forgive mama, this is all I could afford to give you. I only spent RM1 million for this birthday,' she posted in a June 3 TikTok video, which has since gone viral with over 2.2 million views. She also wished that her daughter's dream of becoming a businesswoman will come true. The video opened with her, her husband and three daughters all dressed up in matching black outfits descending a grand staircase. They stepped onto a stage outside the house where they and the assembled guests sang 'Happy birthday' to her eldest daughter, whom she called Yaya, before the unveiling of the gifts. Ms Farhana said Yaya's wishes are fulfilled on an almost daily basis, leaving her unsure of what else to give to the little girl, adding that she hoped the 'little gifts' will make her happy. The video and Ms Farhana use of the word 'only' to describe the amount she spent, did not go down well with netizens, who accused her of flaunting her wealth and trying to gain attention. 'Not to be rude, but trying very hard to show off,' a netizen with the handle Aiman said. Another netizen, Mono, said: 'That's not the right way to raise a daughter... I think you're overreacting and trying too hard.' Others noted the impracticality of the gifts, especially the car, given that the girl is still too young to drive. '(I) need to know the logic of giving cars to a child... They can't even drive, no they're not even going to drive knowing they can afford (to hire) drivers,' said a netizen with the handle Njwa. In another follow-up video, Ms Farhana also surprised her child's former driver with a luxury car as a token of appreciation. LIV move led to massive influencer role: Bryson DeChambeau
US President Donald Trump, accompanied by Bryson DeChambeau, waves as they return to the White House following a round of golf in Washington, DC. PHOTO: AFP LOS ANGELES – Bryson DeChambeau discussed his 'fun side quests' on June 4 as he prepared to return to his day job and start gearing up for the upcoming US Open. Since tying for second at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in May, the two-time Major winner's busy calendar has included a lap around the track at the Indianapolis 500 and hitting golf balls with US President Donald J. Trump on the White House lawn. DeChambeau, 31, acknowledged that playing the limited schedule of LIV Golf events has given him more time to expand his role as an influencer – he has more than 2 million YouTube subscribers – and also experience more of what life has to offer. 'I think LIV afforded me the opportunity to spend more time thinking, strategizing, getting my body healthy, ready for Majors in a pretty unique way,' he said. 'For me, it was a great thing. I thought there was an opportunity to do other things in life, and look, do I want to win every single tournament I show up to? 100 per cent.' DeChambeau met with reporters at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, where the LIV Golf Virginia event begins on June 6. 'Hitting in the White House was incredibly special,' he added. 'I never thought I would ever in my life get an opportunity to do it, but the President himself was like, 'Just go out there and hit some shots'. I was like, 'Okay, yes, sir'. It was quite the experience.' DeChambeau, who won US Open titles in 2020 and 2024, said that he was inspired by influencers and YouTube pioneers like MrBeast and Dude Perfect. 'I said, 'Why can't I do that, as well?'' he said. 'I think there's an opportunity to be as influential as I am now, and this was just the beginning. I think there's a lot more to come. 'I hope that's a positive force for the game of golf because my initiative with the game of golf is that, yeah, I want to win a lot of tournaments, but how can I make a greater impact, than by just winning tournaments?' The Crushers GC captain said he considers himself a competitor and an entertainer – 'two things that I love doing'. 'Now that I've got a couple million followers on YouTube, I'm incredibly grateful. There's no other words about it. Did I ever think it would get this big? I had no clue. I really had no idea,' he said. 'Is it now an incredible responsibility? Yes. I want to continue to entertain my fans and also continue to play the great game of golf that we all love at the highest level.'
