UK and Turkey sign preliminary deal for Eurofighter Typhoon jets

Euronews7 days ago
The UK and Turkey signed a preliminary agreement on Wednesday for the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Turkey, marking a significant step in Ankara's efforts to modernise its air fleet.
Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler and his British counterpart, John Healey, inked a memorandum of understanding during a defence industry fair in Istanbul, Turkey's Ministry of National Defence said.
NATO member Turkey has long aimed to buy 40 Eurofighter jets, which are built by a consortium of British, German and Italian companies.
Germany reportedly initially opposed the sale but later reversed its position. Britain led negotiations on behalf of the consortium.
A Turkish defence ministry statement said the memorandum takes the two countries "one step closer to a full agreement on the Typhoon."
"Both Ministers welcome signature as a positive step towards bringing Turkey into the Typhoon club and share a mutual ambition to conclude the necessary arrangements as soon as possible," it added.
Turkish officials have said that they are still negotiating over pricing and technical terms, saying that they have received an initial offer and expect to submit a counter-proposal.
Turkey is also seeking to return to the US-led F-35 fighter jet programme, from which the country was ousted in 2019 following its purchase of Russian-made S-400 missile defence systems.
The US said the systems were incompatible with NATO tech and posed a risk to the F-35s.
Turkey is also developing a domestic fifth-generation fighter jet, the KAAN, which is slated to be operational in 2028.

Debenhams Group says Pinterest link-up is driving sales, launches Warehouse-Tony Green collab

Debenhams Group has had plenty of news to share of late and this week's no different with an update on the progress of its Pinterest partnership and the launch of an illustrator collab. To 'increase brand awareness and boost customer growth', the group earlier linked up with Pinterest and as part of its growth strategy and marketplace shift, it's 'successfully utilising the visual search and discovery platform to reach an engaged audience through Pinterest's growing suite of AI tools'. The company owns labels including brands including Debenhams itself, PrettyLittleThing, boohoo, boohooMAN and Karen Millen, and it's the Debenhams brand itself that has been the first to launch a campaign on Pinterest. It's 'working closely with Pinterest on a marketing strategy to help position it as the 'go-to' shopping destination across home, fashion and beauty'. We're told the majority of users come to Pinterest with the intention to shop and 96% of their searches are unbranded, so the e-tailer sees Pinterest as 'the ideal platform to reach an engaged audience, at the very moment they're making their purchasing decisions'. It's using 'inspirational, design-led content, enabling more shoppers to discover must-have brands and products that are available to instantly shop across its growing marketplace, which is now home to more than 15,000 brands'. The company said this has resulted in 'enhanced brand discoverability and increased instant shopping' for those brands. Following a bridal campaign this year, it also led to the 'conversion of consumer attention into commercial action creating measurable business results' with '75% better click-through rates, compared to category benchmarks for a bridal campaign'. The company added that 'to help capture shoppers open to discovering new products and brands, Debenhams has launched targeted outreach. The aim is to convert shopping inspiration into purchasing action, encouraging curious shoppers to consider buying from Debenhams'. And 'lower-funnel activity will convert high-intent users considering a purchase into returning Debenhams customers. By using dynamic product advertisements, Debenhams is able to surface timely offers and drive conversations, maximising its return on advertising spend, whilst fuelling customer loyalty and driving repeat purchases'. Meanwhile, the group's warehouse brand has this week launched a new collab with British fashion illustrator Tony Green. The limited-edition capsule collection 'champions bold expression, artistic freedom, and modern femininity, blending Green's signature abstract aesthetic with Warehouse 's contemporary design sensibility'. The result is a collection of 'wearable art that transforms everyday fashion into a canvas for creativity'. The pieces, which includes tees, dresses, denim and a variety of separates, are priced from £35 up to £79.

Christian Dior UK results show tough year, but womenswear and watches/jewellery shine

Dior UK has filed its accounts for 2024 and they show both turnover and profits falling at the British arm of the major French fashion house. See catwalk Turnover dropped 16% to just over £280 million and profit before tax was down 41% at £27.6 million. That figure had been £46.6 million in the previous year and £60 million in 2022. The gross profit percentage dipped 1% to 56% and final profit for the financial year fell 39% to £21.88 million. The company didn't give many details about current trading but said that it expects 2025 to be in line with 2024 in terms of profits. Looking back at 2024, it called the performance "solid" despite the unfavourable global economic environment and highlighted how gross profit remained strong while its operating profit percentage fell by only 4pts 'thanks to vigilant cost management'. The number of people the company employed on average in the UK also dropped by more than 40. It said it navigated the uncertain environment with 'resilience, showcasing the strength of its strategy and the quality of its products', particularly in its women's ready-to-wear division. That was up 2% while the watches/jewellery division rose an even better 5%. It didn't specify the categories in which it saw weakness. Of course, these UK accounts don't paint a full picture of the business given that the company is global and its HQ, including all-important functions such as design and marketing, is based in Paris. But nonetheless the figures do underline just how the tough the market has been in the UK, which was hit last year by a number of issues. They included the overall luxury downturn, the wider cost-of-living crisis and the absence of the tax-free shopping perk that had made luxury shopping in Britain a lot more attractive before Brexit.
