Bettors are in for a treat Saturday as a loaded field of top older horses lines up for the 44th running of the $1 million Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs. The race, a "Win and You're In" for the Breeders' Cup Classic, features a compelling rematch between Kentucky Derby 150 winner Mystik Dan and Breeders' Cup Classic champ Sierra Leone, along with Dubai World Cup winner Hit Show, rising star Mindframe, and several other stakes-caliber contenders.
Run at 1 1/8 miles, the Stephen Foster is the centerpiece of a 12-race card that also includes five other stakes, making it one of the most attractive wagering days of the Churchill Downs Spring Meet. First post is 12:45 p.m. ET, with the Foster set for 6:03 p.m. as Race 11.
Let's break down the contenders with a focus on value, pace setup, and betting angles:
Sierra Leone (Post 4 – Flavien Prat, Chad Brown)
The likely favorite, Sierra Leone returns for his first start since dominating the Breeders' Cup Classic last fall. He's trained steadily at Brown's New York base and ships in fresh. He owns a win over 1 1/8 miles and is proven against top company. But bettors should weigh his 8-month layoff and potential lack of early speed, especially in a race that could favor forwardly placed runners.
Mystik Dan (Post 5 – Brian Hernandez Jr., Kenny McPeek)
The Derby winner offers strong horse-for-course appeal with three wins at Churchill and enters off a sharp victory in the Blame Stakes (G3) over this track. He's razor sharp and should sit a perfect stalking trip. If the price floats above 4-1, he may be the best value play in the race.
Mindframe (Post 2 – Irad Ortiz Jr., Todd Pletcher)
Mindframe is the wildcard. He's 4-for-6 lifetime and enters off a victory in the Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) sprinting. The key question: can he carry his speed around two turns? Pletcher has stretched sprinters out successfully before, and Ortiz sticks. He'll be near the pace early and could control things if no one pressures him.
Hit Show (Post 6 – Florent Geroux, Brad Cox)
Fresh off a career-defining win in the $12 million Dubai World Cup, Hit Show looms as the class of the field. But he's been off since April and will be spotting fitness to sharper foes. Trainer Brad Cox wins 24% off layoffs and this 5-year-old can certainly win—but he may be an underlay given the circumstances.
First Mission (Post 1 – Luis Saez, Brad Cox)
A sneaky contender, First Mission exits a win in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and draws the rail. He'll need to use some early speed to avoid getting shuffled back, but Saez is aggressive and Churchill has been kind to inside speed horses. He's capable of upsetting the apple cart with the right trip.
Skippylongstocking (Post 3 – Jose Ortiz, Saffie Joseph Jr.)
A battle-tested 6-year-old with back-class, 'Skippy' exits wins in the Gold Cup (G2) and Challenger (G3). He was third in this race last year and thrives at this distance. If the pace gets hot up front, he'll be one to watch flying late at a price.
Ashcroft (Post 7 – Julien Leparoux, D. Wayne Lukas)
The longest shot in the field, Ashcroft steps way up in class and looks overmatched on paper. He's more of a pace factor than a win candidate.
With a Breeders' Cup Classic berth on the line and major betting value throughout the field, the 2025 Stephen Foster shapes up as a can't-miss race for fans and horseplayers alike. You can get the picks and plays over at Racingdudes.com.

Lakers rumors: Contenders lurking after Dorian Finney-Smith declines $15.4 million option
The post Lakers rumors: Contenders lurking after Dorian Finney-Smith declines $15.4 million option appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Lakers' biggest goal this offseason has to be addressing their lack of depth and getting a big man or two in the room after gutting their roster to acquire Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks last offseason. While Los Angeles waits to see what big men it can make a run after, it was also waiting on the decision from Dorian Finney-Smith. Advertisement Finney-Smith had a player option worth $15.4 million this offseason, and he is choosing to hit the open market instead. The former Maverick has officially declined his player option and will be a free agent when it opens on Monday, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Charania also stated that there will be contending teams that are after Finney-Smith in free agency. 'Los Angeles Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith is declining his $15.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season and will enter free agency, sources tell ESPN,' Charania reported on X, formerly Twitter. 'Multiple contending teams are expected to pursue Finney-Smith beginning Monday night and a Lakers return is possible.' While the Lakers are still in play for Finney-Smith, it appears that it's going to take a substantial raise in order to keep him in Los Angeles. The Florida product has an ideal skillset on the wing for a contender, with the ability to guard elite perimeter scorers and also knock down open shots from the 3-point line. Advertisement He did just that for the Lakers last season, making nearly 40% of his triples after arriving in Los Angeles following a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. He was also a big piece of the defense for JJ Redick and company and was one of the few players that the first-year head coach trusted in the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Finney-Smith played with Doncic during their time in Dallas and they even went to the Western Conference Finals together in 2022, so those two already have good chemistry together. As a result, the Lakers may decide that it's worth paying a premium to keep the 32-year old around for the long haul as they pivot to building for the future around their new superstar. Angels Fans React to Mike Trout Post on Monday
Angels Fans React to Mike Trout Post on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is playing in his fifteenth major-league season since being selected 25th overall in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Advertisement Widely regarded as the best player of his generation, Trout won American League Rookie of the Year in 2012, has captured three AL MVP Awards, and is an 11-time All-Star. In 2019, he signed a 12-year, $426.5 million extension that keeps him in Anaheim through 2030 and includes a full no-trade clause. Despite his personal accolades, Trout has yet to experience postseason success with the Angels, who have not won a playoff game during his career. At age 33, he's batting just .230 with a .788 OPS—well below his career averages of .297 and .984—signaling his best days may be behind him. Los Angeles Angels right fielder Mike Trout (27)© Rich Storry-Imagn Images On Monday, the Angels posted a photo of Trout in an attempt to get him more votes for the All-Star Game in Atlanta. Advertisement The team wrote, '#VoteTrout daily, now until Wednesday (7/2) at 9am PT, to help him get to Atlanta!' Fans reacted to the Angels post on X. "Let's hope he has a good series in Atlanta," a fan said. Another added, "Nope. He's not deserving." One fan wrote, "If Trout crushes in ATL, he'll def be an All-Star." "Vote for the best," said a fan. "And vote only Trout for AL OF!" said another. Trout secured two All-Star Game MVP Awards in 2016 and 2019, rising to the occasion with baseball's biggest stars. The Angels have surged in June, improving to 41–42 and sitting only two games back of a wild-card spot. With October contention within reach, a rebound for Trout is critical—both to boost Anaheim's lineup and to earn him a spot on the All-Star roster. (AP Photo/Jason Behnken) TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Shea Langeliers smashed a three-run homer in his first plate appearance since coming off the injured list, and Lawrence Butler broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-run triple that lifted the Athletics over the Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Monday night. The Athletics made two key defensive plays in the bottom of the eighth to keep it tied at 4. Advertisement The Rays had runners on first and second with no outs when Junior Caminero hit a hard grounder to third, but Max Muncy stepped on the bag and threw to first for a double play. Josh Lowe then singled to left field but Colby Thomas threw a dart to home plate to get Brandon Lowe. Butler sent a shot to the wall in left-center field to score runners from second and third on his second triple of the season. Sean Newcomb (2-4) got the final out in the eighth, and Mason Miller worked a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save. Brent Rooker had an RBI single for the Athletics, who had lost six of eight. The Rays, coming off a defeat at Baltimore, had won five straight and 10 of their last 11 following a loss. Advertisement Pete Fairbanks (3-2) allowed three hits and two runs in the ninth. Key moment The first hit for the Rays came in the fourth on Caminero's two-run homer — his 21st of the season — over the center-field wall. Jonathan Aranda and Jose Caballero added RBI singles to tie it at 4. Key stat The Athletics, who allowed four home runs Sunday, have given up 125 longballs this season, the second-most in team history before the All-Star break. Up next Athletics LHP Jeffrey Springs (6-6, 4.30 ERA) starts Tuesday against his former team. RHP Shane Baz (8-3, 4.37) goes for the Rays. ___ AP MLB:
