46 Killed In Israeli Attacks Across Gaza: Civil Defence

A girl runs from the scene after Israeli strikes on a school sheltering displaced people at the Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, July 17, 2025, in this screen grab from video obtained by Reuters. Reuters TV/via REUTERS GAZA, Aug 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 46 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip on Friday, the Civil Defence said, reported Xinhua. Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for the Civil Defence Authority, said seven people were killed in an airstrike that targeted a tent housing displaced persons in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood in western Gaza City. He said that six others, including two children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a school building where displaced people were staying in the al-Daraj neighbourhood, east of Gaza City. bootstrap slideshow At least 24 people, including a woman and two children, were killed by the Israeli army while waiting to receive food in front of aid distribution centres north of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, at the Netzarim junction in the centre of the Strip, and the Zikim crossing in the north, according to Basal. He added that four people, including a girl, were killed in Israeli shelling that targeted Palestinian gatherings and a residential house in the Zeitoun and Tuffah neighbourhoods in eastern Gaza City. Two were killed in an airstrike on a tent housing displaced persons on the roof of the outpatient clinic building at al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, Basal noted. Three Palestinians, including an infant, were also killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a tent housing displaced persons west of Gaza City, according to Basal. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said in statements on Friday that IDF troops, in coordination with the Air Forces, continue operational activity against "terrorist organisations" throughout the Gaza Strip, including Gaza City and Khan Younis. Since Israel resumed its intensified military campaign on March 18, at least 10,300 Palestinians have been killed and 43,234 injured, bringing the overall death toll in Gaza since the war began in October 2023 to 61,827 and 155,275 people injured, according to health authorities in Gaza on Friday.

Serbia's police uses teargas to disperse protesters

BELGRADE (Reuters) -Serbia's police used teargas and crowd control vehicles on Friday evening in Belgrade to disperse anti-government protesters who threw firecrackers and flares at police officers in what is seen as a major escalation of the nine-month-long protests. The protesters gathered at around 8 p.m. (1800 GMT) in front of the army headquarters building that was bombed in 1999 by NATO. Few hours later they started throwing flares at police officers. Trash containers were overturned and set on fire. One tree caught fire. The police threw teargas canisters to push protesters away. Protests were held in several other towns - Novi Sad, Nis, Kragujevac and Valjevo. Teargas was used in Nis as well. There were no official figures on how many people were injured. Months of protests across Serbia sparked by the deaths of 16 people when a roof on a renovated railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, have rattled President Aleksandar Vucic and his SNS party. Protests have been mainly peaceful until Wednesday evening when 27 police officers and around 80 civilians were injured in clashes, and 47 people had been detained. "Every evening we deploy 3,000 policemen across Serbia, they are being beaten and they are being injured," Vucic told RTS TV earlier on Friday. Protesters have blamed corruption for the Novi Sad railway station disaster and are demanding early elections in hopes of ousting Vucic and his party. Students, opposition groups, and anti-corruption watchdogs have accused Vucic and his allies of ties to organized crime, using violence against political rivals, and suppressing media freedoms—allegations they deny. "I'm closely following events in Serbia, where human rights concerns persist," Michael O'Flaherty, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights wrote on a Facebook page. "I deplore the police's disproportionate force in Valjevo yesterday (Thursday) evening and reiterate my call on the authorities to avoid excessive force, end arbitrary arrests, and de-escalate the situation." Second senior Chinese diplomat detained for questioning, sources say

BEIJING: A deputy to a prominent Chinese diplomat being questioned by authorities was also detained, three people with knowledge of the matter said, a further sign of uncertainty in the top echelons of China's diplomacy. Sun Haiyan, a senior diplomat and former ambassador to Singapore, was detained in early August around the time Liu Jianchao, widely seen as a potential foreign minister candidate, was taken in for questioning, two of the people said. Sun, the first woman to serve as a deputy head of the Communist Party's International Department, was detained by Chinese authorities in connection with the questioning of Liu, the sources said. None of the sources knew the basis of the questioning of either diplomat. The sources requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. The detention of Liu, who leads the International Department, marked the highest-level disappearance of a diplomat since China ousted its former foreign minister and President Xi Jinping's protégé, Qin Gang, in 2023, following an unexplained public absence. His detention followed a work trip to Singapore, South Africa and Algeria. His house was searched in early August. The disappearance of Sun alongside the highly visible Liu adds to questions about China's foreign policy establishment at a time of rising tensions with Washington around trade and geopolitical influence. China's State Council Information Office, which handles media queries for the government, and the International Department did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Reuters could not verify if both Sun and Liu were still being detained. Neither could be reached for comment. Both their profiles remain on the International Department's website. Sun's last public appearance was on Aug 1, when she attended a reception hosted by Nepal's embassy in Beijing. Sun, 53, was stationed in Singapore between May 2022 and July 2023. When she left her post, she hosted a 500-person reception at a luxury Singapore hotel, according to Chinese news reports. She joined the International Department in 1997, where she served in a wide range of roles, including spokesperson and head of the bureau responsible for ties with Southeast Asian countries. She also served as a district Party Committee official in the city of Zibo, Shandong province, in 2008. Originally from Hebei province, Sun holds a doctorate in law from Peking University, having also studied at Japan's Kyushu University.
