The 5 games that could define Barcelona's 2025/26 season
Barcelona claimed the 2024/25 La Liga title in head coach Hansi Flick's first season in charge.
Along with their success in the league, Barcelona also bagged the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana last campaign.
With a couple of additions to the squad in the ongoing summer transfer window, the Catalan club will be looking to defend their domestic treble in the upcoming campaign as well as lift their first Champions League trophy since 2014–15.
However, there could be some crucial fixtures that decide Barcelona's fate in the 2025/26 campaign.
The Sporting News takes a look at the five league fixtures that could define Barcelona's upcoming league season.
Real Madrid (Away) - October 26, 2025
The first El Clasico of the season is always a major event, and for the 2025/26 campaign, Barcelona will be making the trip to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on October 26.

Barcelona have not been on the receiving end of much success at Santiago Bernabeu, with 24 wins in 95 league games there as opposed to Real Madrid's 56 victories.
While they may not have a good away record against Los Blancos in La Liga, Barca won all four matches across competitions against Real Madrid last season and would be looking forward to pulling off similar results in the upcoming season.
RCD Espanyol (Away) - January 04, 2026
Another great historical rivalry in Spanish football includes the one between Barcelona and Espanyol.
Any match between the two clubs is referred to as Derbi Barceloni, and the first one of the upcoming season is slated for January 4 next year at RCDE Stadium.
Barcelona have bagged 19 victories in 33 league games at RCDE Stadium, while Espanyol have managed 10 wins.
Atletico de Madrid (Away) - April 05, 2026
Atletico de Madrid ranked third in the La Liga table last season, maintaining their stance as potential title contenders in the majority of the past campaigns.
Barcelona's away record against Atletico in La Liga has not been very impressive so far, with 28 wins in 88 games as opposed to the home side's 39 victories.
Atletico will be hosting Barcelona at the Metropolitano Stadium on April 5, 2026. With the match being scheduled in the concluding months of the La Liga season, the Catalans would be hoping to walk away with three points at the final whistle.
RCD Espanyol (Home) - April 12, 2026
The return derby of the 2025/26 season will be held at the newly renovated Camp Nou on April 12.
Barcelona have 23 victories in 33 home league games against Espanyol, who have managed only three wins.
The league match between Barca and Espanyol is anticipated to be a key fixture, especially as it is in the final stretch of the season.
Real Madrid (Home) - May 10, 2026
The second and last El Clasico of the 2025/26 La Liga season will be hosted by Barcelona on May 10, 2026.
Barca have 52 league wins at home against Real Madrid, who have secured 23 in 95 games. Being one of the last matches of the season, it will be an important contest for both sides, on top of the usual significance of the Spanish rivalry.

Celtic's transfer inactivity an unnecessary Champions League risk
Following last night's dramatic penalty shootout between Slovan Bratislava and Kairat Almaty, Celtic now face what can only be described as a nightmare trip to Kazakhstan as we aim to secure Champions League football for a fourth consecutive season. Historically, this is far from a comfort zone for us. Despite recent successes against teams from this region, Celtic have never won on Kazakh soil. Our record reads like a cautionary tale: a loss to Shakhter Karagandy in 2013, a draw with Astana in 2016, and defeat to the same club in 2017. So yes, the warning signs are there. However, despite the logistical hurdles of traveling to Kazakhstan - long flights, time zone changes and unfamiliar conditions - this is very much a tie Celtic should be winning. Champions League qualification is not just about the prestige, it's a financial gamechanger for a club like Celtic - a £40m jackpot that could bolster finances and squad depth alike. The real question is whether our current set-up is capable of seizing this opportunity. Concerns linger. The lack of key signings suggests we may be heading east with a squad not fully equipped for the challenge. Uefa's deadline to register new players is midnight on Thursday (two extra players can be added up to 24 hours before the first leg) yet, based on recent transfer activity - or more accurately, inactivity - it's hard to imagine any new faces being added in time. This approach raises eyebrows. The club appears to be taking a gamble: chasing Champions League revenue without adequately investing in the squad that could secure it. In essence, Celtic are waiting to qualify for Europe's elite competition before strengthening the team, rather than building a squad that could make qualification more likely. It's a classic chicken-and-egg scenario - and one that feels unnecessarily risky, especially given the vast cash reserves the club currently holds. Still, football is rarely predictable. A spirited performance in Kazakhstan could (and should) provide the platform to take our place at Europe's top table once again. But as history - and logistics - warn us, this is far from a guaranteed triumph. The fans, players, and club itself now face a high-stakes test - one that demands focus, determination and perhaps a little luck along the way. Tino can be found at The Celtic Exchange

Spanish third-tier club reverses decision to sign player after his comments anger Catalans
MADRID (AP) — Spanish third-tier club Nastic has quickly reversed its decision to sign a player after fans complained about his derogatory comments about Catalans on Instagram Live last year. Nastic, which is based in the Catalan city of Tarragona, on Tuesday announced it was signing left back José Manuel Calderón on a one-year contract with an option for another year. But a few hours later, 'after further evaluation,' the club said it would not formalize the signing. 'The club, which represents a city and a fan base proud of its history, identity and values, believes that any new signing must be aligned with the respect, unity, and social responsibility that characterize us,' Nastic said in a statement. 'We regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused to our members, shareholders and fans, and we reaffirm our commitment to continue working to build the best possible squad to successfully face the 2025-26 season,' the club said. The 25-year-old Calderón used an expression with derogatory words against Catalans. He apologized at the time, and again late Tuesday after his deal with Nastic fell through. 'I'm a little upset, in shock, but I accept the consequences," he told local sports show El Chiringuito. 'First of all, I want to apologize to all the people who were offended. I have Catalan family, Catalan friends, and they didn't take it the same way. Here in Andalusia, for me, it's a normal expression, one we don't take with such repercussions, but it struck a chord with people, and I wanted to apologize publicly.' At the time of his comments on Instagram, Calderón was playing with Cordoba, which had just been promoted to the second division following the 2023-24 season. ___ AP soccer:

Barcelona President to request bank guarantee from board due to shortfalls
Barcelona President Joan Laporta has been adamant about the strong financial management under his tenure, claiming that they have taken the club out of intensive care. However the struggle to make the club profitable continues to elude him and his board. As a result, Barcelona have been facing more registration problems with the men's first team, but more recently, their wide array of teams in other sports have fallen on hard times. Despite being perennial winners, Barcelona Femeni currently only have 18 players registered, and recently let go of Jana Fernandez to improve their finances. Basket Laporta to request bank guarantee from board members According to Marca, Laporta will request a bank guarantee of €7m from his board members to cover the shortfall. The reason being that their costs have been excessive in terms of their salaries and staff costs, especially when looked at in the context of their salary limit. The board will hold an extraordinary meeting today. Image via FC Barcelona The bank guarantee allows Barcelona to dip into the club accounts temporarily for a set amount in order to fund operations, but the money must then be made up before the end of their mandate. If it is not, then the board themselves are liable for the money personally. RAC1 (via Sport) say there is a certain reluctance from other board members to agree to this, as it is the final year of Laporta's tenure before elections, giving them less time to resolve the matter, and increasing the risk that the board may be liable for the money personally. Barcelona could use bank guarantee to register new signings Barcelona hope to register new signings for their men's first team, Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford, and have tried to activate the injury rule in order to register the former. However amid doubts over whether that will go through without any issues, the option of a bank guarantee in order to register Garcia and Rashford is on the table too. What is happening with Barcelona's €100m VIP seats lease? The Catalan daily explain that they now have their accounts back from auditors Crowe, although they do not mention whether the €100m VIP seats lease has been added back into their balance sheet. The Blaugrana activated the VIP seats for the first time during the Joan Gamper trophy against Como on Sunday, and need both Crowe and then La Liga to accept the measure in order to get the money added back into their salary limit calculations. They are working with La Liga to validate their updated accounts.
