Tourists stranded inR'bore forest; 3 safarivehicles, drivers banned

Ranthambore: Three safari vehicles, drivers and one guide have been banned till further orders after tourists were left stranded inside Ranthambore forest Saturday evening. The forest department has also ordered an inquiry into the incident, directing the assistant conservator of forests, tourism, to submit a report within three days. The order was issued by the deputy conservator of forests, tourism. The action followed a serious lapse in safari operations. An official said one of the safari vehicles ferrying tourists back from Zone 6 broke down in the dark, leaving the visitors stuck in the forest. Another one, which was supposed to be stationed at the forest chowki as a standby, was not on duty. "A third safari vehicle, which had already returned with tourists, was instructed to bring back the stranded visitors but failed to comply with departmental directions. As a result, all three vehicles, their drivers, and the accompanying guide have been barred from operations," he said. Meanwhile, the forest department has also taken a decision regarding the age limit of safari vehicles. Contrary to earlier proposals to extend the service of vehicles from 10 to 15 years, the department will now only grant a one-year relaxation. The field director has been instructed to ensure that all vehicles operating in the Ranthambore Tiger Project are safe, suitable for tourism, and meet safari standards before any extension is approved. Currently, 556 vehicles are registered for tourism in Ranthambore. The Ranthambore Vehicle Safari Owners' Union had previously submitted a memorandum demanding an extension of the model condition. However, hoteliers and other stakeholders argue that poorly maintained vehicles pose a significant risk to tourists. They pointed out that newer, technologically better vehicles with lower emissions are available in the market. "Some of the existing vehicles are in a ramshackle state. Owners avoid spending on maintenance since they expect these vehicles to be discontinued soon," a hotelier said. A forest staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity, admitted that the pressure from vehicle owners played a role in granting the one-year relaxation. "The extension was given despite concerns, as it was seen as an additional burden on owners," the official said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Ex-corporator asks BMC for underground parking at Regal Junction

Mumbai: Former corporator Makarand Narwekar has written to BMC Commissioner and has asked to construct an underground parking at Regal Junction citing Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) directions. Narwekar said the Regal Junction Area development project, which has been under an undeclared and unexplained stay for some time, envisioned an underground parking facility with a viewing deck over it—an idea that promised both functional and aesthetic value to one of South Mumbai's most prominent public spaces. Narwekar drew attention to the recent meeting of MHCC held for deliberation and for granting of in-principle approval for the Regal Junction Project and said that MHCC, while granting its in-principle approval, had specifically stated that the Assistant Commissioner, A Ward, was advised to keep the public plaza open for public activities and all the parking to be planned underground. Narwekar said that this recommendation aligns with the original plan and with the pressing need to free surface space for pedestrians and tourists, while accommodating vehicular needs underground. According to Narwekar, while around 50 cars are currently parked in an open space diagonally opposite Regal Cinema, the proposed underground parking was designed to accommodate around 150 cars and bikes. Therefore, the provision of underground parking with a viewing deck above it is essential to improve the tourist experience in the area and to reduce surface congestion. Safari vehicles in R'bore granted 1-year extension

1 2 Jaipur: Forest department has granted a one-year extension to safari vehicles in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. According to the order, the field director must ensure that vehicles permitted for safaris are safe, suitable for tourism, and meet prescribed safari standards before allowing the extension. Officials said the model validity of these vehicles will expire in 2026, after which they will not be permitted for tourism operations. However, following requests from associations and the absence of practical alternatives, a temporary extension was provided. "Tourists prefer Gypsies due to their manoeuvrability and suitability for rugged terrain. With the extension, Gypsies will continue for one safari season starting Oct 1," an official said. Currently, 556 vehicles are registered for tourism at Ranthambhore, including 269 Gypsies and 287 Canters. The Ranthambhore Vehicle Safari Owners' Union earlier submitted a memorandum to the forest department seeking an extension. The challenge, however, lies in the fact that Gypsy manufacturing was discontinued in 2016. While diesel vehicles are available in the market, their higher emissions make them unsuitable for protected areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Officials said a petrol-based model was expected to emerge as an alternative, as petrol vehicles typically cause less pollution and are considered more compatible with eco-sensitive tourism. But no viable petrol option was developed, leaving both the department and safari operators without a substitute. Forest officials noted that a similar directive was earlier issued for replacing old Canters with newer models. Implementation was delayed due to the ongoing tourist season, but an extension was provided. With several companies offering Canters with improved technology and lower emissions, the department directed that alternatives be explored. Officials admit that unless a suitable petrol or eco-friendly vehicle is identified, both forest department and safari operators may face uncertainty when the validity of Gypsies ends in 2026.
