Young man killed in Hermel after ignoring army warning

The success of a young woman graduating with a technical baccalaureate in Hermel (northern Bekaa) indirectly led to the death of her brother.
After learning Tuesday of his sister's success in the technical baccalaureate, a young man from the Kanaan family immediately left, taking his father's car, and headed toward the Syrian side of the border with a weapon in hand, reports our correspondent Sarah Abdallah, citing security sources.
In this "sensitive" area of Matraba-el-Qasr, where the Army has strict orders to maintain security, a military patrol passing through the area asked the young man to stop. When he refused to comply and stop his vehicle, the patrol opened fire to force the driver out of the car, but he was fatally wounded, according to our correspondent.
The Army released a statement about the incident, specifying that on July 25, 2025, "as a car carrying a Lebanese citizen and a Syrian national passed near an army border observation post in the village of Matraba-el-Qasr, the two men got out of the vehicle and fired shots toward the village, without responding to the soldiers' warnings." The statement also said the two men "tried to leave the scene, threatening to run over the soldiers, who found themselves forced to respond, killing the Lebanese and wounding the Syrian."
The Army noted that "an investigation has been opened under judicial supervision to clarify all the circumstances of the incident."
This area on the Syrian border has seen clashes for several months between various Lebanese and Syrian clans. As recently as July 13, a conflict broke out between members of the Zeaiter clan and others from the Akidi clan in the locality of al-Qasr. Clashes related to smuggling operations had pitted Syrian security forces against Lebanese members of Shiite clans living near the border in February and March. The Army has been heavily deployed in the area to prevent such incidents.

Alleged tobacco smugglers open fire on Lebanese customs at Palestinian camp entrance near Sour

BEIRUT — A Lebanese customs patrol came under fire from alleged tobacco smugglers on Thursday afternoon at one of the side entrances to the al-Buss Palestinian refugee camp near the city of Sour, according to L'Orient Today's correspondent in the region. The customs patrol was raiding a location where shisha tobacco was allegedly being counterfeited when the gunfire took place. Did the Lebanese Army build a watchtower in south Lebanon? Did the Lebanese Army build a watchtower in south Lebanon? The incident prompted the Lebanese Army to intervene and block the road to ensure the safety of passersby. The army also deployed reinforcements to the area and carried out raids. The side entrance to the camp, where the incident took place, is located adjacent to the main road leading to the city of Sour. While security incidents are often reported in other refugee camps, especially Ain al-Hilweh near Saida, armed clashes have rarely occurred inside or near the al-Buss camp.

UNIFIL's Western Sector Command detected 73 unexploded ordnance in last six months

BEIRUT — UNIFIL's Western Sector Command stated on Thursday that it detected 73 unexploded ordnance in Southern Lebanon and notified the Lebanese army about them over the past six months. "Peacekeepers in the western sector have carried out activities aimed at reducing risks to the population, detecting and reporting 73 unexploded ordnance. The Lebanese Armed Forces [LAF] were immediately notified of each discovery, enabling their specialized units to intervene quickly and clear and secure potentially dangerous areas", the statement reads. Hezbollah and Israel were engaged in a conflict from October 2023 until a cease-fire in November 2024. However, despite the agreement, the Israeli army still carries out airstrikes on a nearly-daily basis, mainly in Southern Lebanon. "The safety and security of the civilian population in southern Lebanon remains an absolute priority for the Western Sector of UNIFIL, which continues to work with determination and in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701", the statement adds. UNIFIL explained that 'these operations are conducted independently or in coordination with the Lebanese Army, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting local communities and preventing incidents that could threaten the lives of civilians, especially children and farmers who are often exposed to hidden dangers on the ground.' According to the statement, the cooperation between UNIFIL and the army has allowed for the "removal of potential threats and the return of parts of the land for safe use by the population.' The statement also mentioned that the commander of the western sector of UNIFIL, Brigadier General Nicola Mandolesi, addressed the residents of southern Lebanon, saying: "It is important to remember that if you find any objects that look suspicious because of their shape, size, or materials, and that might be related to ammunition or explosive components, you should not touch or mess with them. These objects could be really dangerous. The Lebanese Army must be notified immediately so that explosives experts can intervene and ensure the safety of the area." Several Israeli munitions landed on Lebanese territory without exploding during the 2023-2024 conflict, most of them in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa, and the southern suburbs of Beirut. In some instances, unexploded ordnance caused casualties, including among Lebanese army soldiers. Some of the munitions date back to previous wars, including the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
