Linux Kernel 6.15 Is Adding Support for These Game Controllers
The upcoming Linux kernel release, version 6.15, will be arriving in the next month or so, and I'm already seeing previews of what to expect. One of them is recently merged support for several gaming controllers and laptop touchpads.
The merge for kernel 6.15rc-6 patches Linux's xpad driver to add support for Xbox gamepads from several different manufacturers. One of them is the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode controller, 8BitDo's Xbox-licensed controller that also works on Windows, Apple, and Android devices. This update will add Linux devices to that list.
Here at How-To Geek we recently reviewed the Ultimate 2.4G, cousin to the Ultimate 3. We liked it especially for its Hall Effect joysticks, and the Ultimate 3 seems to just add Xbox branding and official support. So as far as I can tell, that controller's probably going to be a great investment for anyone who likes to game with both an Xbox and a Linux device.
Also in the list of newly supported controllers is the HORI Drum controller, a percussion peripheral designed specifically for the rhythm-focused game Taiko no Tatsujin Rhythm Festival. The game isn't native to Linux, but ProtonDB at the time of writing gives it a Gold rating, meaning you should have little or no trouble playing it on a Linux PC or Steam Deck.
Two PowerA controllers are joining the Linux gaming world with this patch as well. The Fusion Pro 4 is a low-cost wired gamepad made for the Xbox Series X|S that also incorporates Hall Effect joysticks. Then there's the MOGA XP-Ultra, which PowerA calls "the first licensed wireless controller for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One."
Another one is the Hyperkin DuchesS Xbox gamepad, a throwback controller reminiscent of the first-generation Xbox controller. It even has the original Xbox logo on it, thanks to a licensing deal with Microsoft. That'll go perfect with your retro Linux gaming setup running Xemu, the original Xbox emulator.
If you have one of these gamepads or are thinking of buying one and want to play with it on a Linux device, you're probably wondering when that'll be possible. The 6.15 Linux kernel update I don't expect to get here until around early June. This patch to xpad is being backported, though, so as long as you're on a stable kernel channel still getting updates, the patch should arrive any day.
The addition of more gamepad support is no surprise. There's always something new around the corner for Linux gamers, thanks in part to the Steam Deck and how it's been mainstreaming the Linux desktop experience. More gamepad support means more people can use their favorite controller with a Steam Deck or other Linux-supported handheld, resulting in a wider userbase.
In the same merge for 6.15-rc6, you can also find updates patching several other peripherals. Some laptops, for example, are having their Synaptic touchpads' input mode changed from PS/2 to the more modern SMBus communication protocol. The affected laptops include:

Kernel 6.15 also includes fixes for the Mad Catz Joytech NEO SE Advanced controller and PDP's official controller for Mirror's Edge. A glitchy "Share" button on some gamepads is being fixed as well. If you happen to own one of those controllers, or one with a share button that wasn't working, you have a lot to look forward to when 6.15 finally drops in a few weeks.

With more people returning to the workplace for at least part of the week, some companies are looking to refresh their IT systems. Instead of replacing entire computers that haven't been used a great deal, some companies are investing in new mice, keyboards and screens to give things a facelift. Logitech has announced the launch of its Signature Slim Wired MK620 and MK625 Combo for Business. Consisting of a revamped keyboard and mouse package, the Combo is designed for companies and industries that prefer to use wired peripherals for reasons of reliability and physical security in shared workspaces. The keyboard and mouse combo can easily switch between Windows PCs, macOS and ChromeOS devices, making the setup suitable for people working in shared spaces with desktop computers or where people bring their laptop but need an external screen, keyboard and mouse. Launching a wired mouse and keyboard may seem a little counterintuitive in this age of wireless peripherals, but there is plenty of logic behind Logitech's position. Indeed, many workplaces have compelling reasons not to use wireless devices and don't want to cut the cord. For example, on financial trading floors, the physical security of devices is vital and the keyboard must be instantly responsive. In medical settings, something like a flat battery in a wireless keyboard or mouse can hinder the input of test results, especially in critical situations. Meanwhile, in schools, colleges and shared workspaces, wired keyboards tend to be stolen far less often. 'Workers in these industries deserve the same modern experience typically seen in wireless tech,' says Henry Levak, VP of Product, Logitech for Business. 'Signature Slim Wired Combo MK620 rewrites the old-school perception of wired devices. It's the end of wired as we know it; time to introduce upgraded performance and customization in a wired model designed for the critical needs of government, banking, healthcare, and shared public spaces.' This latest addition to Logitech's Signature Slim family includes the Signature Slim Wired MK620 for Business keyboard that offers a similar feel to a laptop-style keyboard that many people are used to using. The keyboard has a dedicated AI Launch Key with instant access to Microsoft's Copilot for Windows or Gemini for ChromeOS. The keyboard can also be customized to launch other AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. For users of meeting software like Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Zoom, the new keyboard has shortcuts that can be configured using the Logi Tune software for creating handy actions like muting a microphone, turning off a webcam or sharing a screen with a single keystroke. The new keyboard comes with the Signature Wired M520 or M520 L for Business mouse. The ambidextrous rodent can be used by left-handed and right-handed people, plus it has an adjustable cursor speed. With a flick of the mouse's SmartWheel, users can activate super-fast scrolling that can race through lengthy web pages or large spreadsheets. Alternatively, users can scroll documents line-by-line with Silent Touch technology that reduces 90% of the mouse's clicking noises. While employees might not appreciate coming back to the office, finding a brand-new and up-to-date keyboard and mouse could ease the pain a little. Logitech thinks IT teams will also appreciate how easy it is to deploy en masse. The Signature Slim Wired Combo MK620 has a switch for IT and employees to easily toggle between Windows, MacOS, and ChromeOS. IT departments can plug the keyboard and mouse into USB-C ports and then choose the operating system they want and deploy multiple devices across the company. The status of the mouse and keyboard can be checked with Logitech's Sync portal and tap into global support when needed. Because wired devices don't require any batteries or recharging, less maintenance is required. This makes connectivity more reliable and there's also less risk of the devices being stolen. The upshot is fewer support calls and help desk tickets. As a company originating in Switzerland, Logitech is hot on sustainability and the Signature Slim Wired Combo MK620 is no exception. Both devices are made with plastic parts containing a minimum of 66% post-consumer recycled material and they are shipped in paper packaging from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources. The keyboard plate is made with low-carbon aluminum and the MK620 combo improves power efficiency by consuming 49% less energy on the keyboard and 50% less on the mouse than its predecessor, the MK120 wired combo. The Logitech Signature Slim Wired Combo MK620 & MK625 for Business will be available globally from June 27 and priced at $69.99. 2026 Kia Niro EV Review: Expert Insights, Pricing, and Trims

The current Niro EV is still offered alongside hybrid and plug-in hybrid Niro variants that share the same versatile body. Should the 2026 Kia Niro EV return to the U.S., it's prime competitors will include the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Nissan Leaf, and Tesla Model 3. What's New Few changes are expected for the 2026 Kia Niro, but the 2027 model may have updated styling and upgraded interior tech. The big question is whether the Niro EV will remain in Kia's lineup or if the Kia EV3 (small electric SUV) or EV4 (small electric sedan) will take its place as an affordable electric car. What We Think The Kia Niro EV makes a sensible entry point for those new to electric vehicles, offering solid build quality, a well-organized cabin, and a hatchback design that adds everyday practicality. Its powertrain offers more grunt and polish than either of the other Niro powertrains (though it's not especially torquey like many EVs). The biggest problem with the 2026 Niro EV is that since this model originally debuted, the Chevrolet Equinox EV arrived with more range at a far more affordable price. As for the Kia, it's packed with standard features and sized well for city driving. Limiting appea is its occasionally firm ride, modest performance, and slow charging speed. Though its range is adequate for daily use, the Niro EV struggles to stand out against more affordable and more capable electric options, leaving it without a competitive advantage. A price cut could strengthen the Niro EV's draw, but we're just as curious for the electric model's viability given the incoming arrival of the EV4. As the older model on older architecture, the Niro EV may not be long for this world. MotorTrend Tested The Niro EV's single-motor FWD electric powertrain produces 201 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. It's enough to accelerate the Niro EV to 60 mph in a MotorTrend-tested 6.5 seconds. That makes it quicker than the Niro PHEV or standard Niro hybrid models. EV Range and Charging Every pre-2026 Niro EV comes equipped with a 64.8-kWh battery, which delivers an estimated driving range of 253 miles. Its maximum charging speed of 85 kW lags behind the faster 150 kW and 350 kW DC fast chargers commonly found at public stations, making recharge times longer than many competitors. Expect these figures to carry over to 2026. To put this another way, the less expensive Chevrolet Equinox EV has a 307-319 mile range depending on trim, and a maximum charge rate of 150 kW. Kia's Newer Electric Cars Should the Niro EV retire, consumers looking for another all-electric Kia will have a good selection to choose from. The brand might be a little more advanced in its EV adoption plans than some other carmakers, already offering the larger EV6 crossover and EV9 three-row SUV and revealing even more are in the pipeline. The next wave of Kia's electric push should include the EV5, a two-row SUV that's like the Sportage of electric crossovers. The EV3 could be the likeliest replacement for the Niro EV, as it's a small two-row ute. However, at this point, it's unclear if the EV3 will arrive in the U.S. The EV4 is a compact entry the U.S. will see in sedan form and, as part of the larger picture, illustrates Kia's drive to legitimize the company's EV prowess. Safety Ratings and Features Although the Niro EV hasn't been safety rated, the 2025 Niro hybrid has been tested by NHTSA. In that government agency's testing, the 2025 Niro only got four stars overall out of a possible five. Driver assists should include two levels of blind-spot monitoring, the available more advanced version delivered with steering intervention. Standard features: Forward and reverse automatic emergency braking Lane keeping A driver focus monitor Automatic high beams Traffic sign monitor Adaptive cruise control Rear parking sensors Self-parking should come with the higher trim level. Technology Look for the Niro EV's dual 10.3-inch screens to return, one for the driver display and the other as an infotainment interface. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will be standard, as will remote start, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, rear AC vents, and rain-sensing wipers. Six speakers are standard on the base model and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon system comes with the upgrade.
