Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio claims world record for most games

Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio on Tuesday claimed the record for most competitive appearances in men's football when the Brazilian played for a 1,391st time. The 44-year-old on Saturday equalled the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton and Fabio has now gone one better following a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record. "Sometimes we don't realize the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years," Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg. The home fans chanted, "Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil," and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. "No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his," said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. "He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. "It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record." Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired. The Englishman considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390. ma-pst/abs/fox

FA guard Dalton Risner could visit Steelers before making decision on contract

Free agent guard and former second-round pick Dalton Risner is preparing to sign with a team ahead of the start of the 2025 regular season. According to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, Risner has visited with the Cincinnati Bengals, will meet with the Seattle Seahawks, and, according to Fowler, could visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers as well before making a decision. Risner is a talented interior offensive lineman with tremendous experience. Risner is in his seventh NFL season and, after spending his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos and the next two with the Seattle Seahawks, has 81 career starts in 87 games. If Risner is considering the Steelers and the Steelers are interested in Risner, it would be because Isaac Seumalo's injury is worse than being reported. Seumalo did some work at practice on Tuesday but has been out for much of training camp with what has been reported as a back injury. Pittsburgh has been shuffling interior offensive line depth in hopes of putting together a solid depth chart. Right now, if Seumalo can't go in Week One of the regular season, it would come down to Max Scharping or Andrus Peat to get the start. Tottenham Hotspur keen on Real Sociedad attacker Takefusa Kubo

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Real Sociedad attacker Takefusa Kubo this summer, according to Spanish outlet Diario AS. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club want to sign another forward alongside Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze before the end of the transfer window. Spurs have identified AS Monaco attacker Maghnes Akliouche as an alternative to Manchester City's Savinho due to the £60 million the Etihad Stadium club are demanding. Kubo, a long-term target of the North London club, is also back on their radar, and he has a €60 million (£52m) release clause. Diario AS claim 'money isn't an issue' for Tottenham, but it remains to be seen whether a concrete move is on the cards for the Japan international. Arsenal have also been linked with the 24-year-old Kubo this summer, but Spurs could now look to pip their bitter city rivals to his services. The Barcelona academy graduate, who Real Madrid once signed, has 24 goals and 18 assists for Sociedad, and moving to the Premier League could appeal to him. Kubo, once dubbed a 'world-class player', has the potential to become one of the best right wingers on the planet. Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank wants a replacement for Son Heung-Min, and while the younger Asian still has some years to go before matching the feats of the South Korean, he remains a top player. Spurs need a player capable of generating commercial success for them in Asia following the departure of their former captain, and Kubo fits the bill. Atletico Madrid are also keen on him, but they are unwilling to activate his release clause, which could be good news for the Lilywhites. There are 13 days left in the summer transfer window and Tottenham need to act quickly if they want Kubo. They have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Palace for Eze, and the Eagles must now find a replacement with the England international waiting to move and training as normal.
