Vehicle production in Britain sinks to lowest level since 1953

Outputs of new cars and vans in Britain in the first half of the year have plunged to lowest levels on record since 1953, excluding the industry-shutdown period during Covid. Production has fallen by 11.3 per cent year-on-year between the months of January and June because of multiple headwinds battering the automotive sector, figures shared by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show. Car outputs are down from 416,000 units in the first half of 2024 to 385,800 in Q1 this year - a decline of 7.3 per cent.
The SMMT blamed the dip on uncertainty over export tariffs for the US - Britain's second most popular destination for UK-made motors shipped overseas - which saw some makers pause production during the opening six months of the year. Jaguar ceasing outputs any cars in November for a 12-month 'sunset period' before relaunching as an electric-only brand in 2026 have taken their toll, as has Mini's decision to shift some vehicle outputs to China and Nissan preparing for production of two new EV models, the first being the all-new third-generation Leaf.
Commercial vehicle manufacturing has sunk comparatively lower by a massive 45 per cent. The trade body said this is mostly due to Stellantis' decision to shutter its Vauxhall Luton factory at the end of March . Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, told a press briefing on Wednesday that the first half year figures are 'depressing' but hopes it marks 'the nadir' for the industry, while ministers have said the numbers are 'very concerning'.
Attempting to remain buoyant in the face of a 72-year low for auto production, the SMMT said significant advances for the sector have been announced in recent weeks that could help stop the auto manufacturing rot. This includes the US-UK tariff deal, which was announced in early May but only came into effect on 30 June. As such, the half-year results posted on Thursday are not reflective of the potential confidence the agreement with the United States could garner.
The data shows that UK car production is predominantly export-focused, with 77 per cent of output headed overseas. While the EU is the most common destination (54 per cent of exports), the US is a major market for British-made motors, representing almost 16 per cent of all shipped vehicles. Hawes also saluted the Government's reintroduction of subsidies towards the purchase of some new EVs, with Labour last week unveiled its Electric Car Grant for sub-£37,000 battery models.
The SMMT said this would be a 'boost' for the industry, though said the scheme - which includes thresholds around emissions produced during the manufacturing of cars ant their batteries to qualify for the grants - lacked clarity and had been announced without consultation with the industry. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds' verdict on today's figures were more downbeat. During an interview with BBC Breakfast, he said he is 'very concerned' about the industry, which he called the 'jewel in the crown' of British manufacturing.
'I'm very concerned about automotive, the pressures on the system which come from the US trade agenda, but also an incredible increase in capacity from China. 'It's why as a government we've adopted so many measures specifically around the automotive sector.' Closer inspection of the latest data shows that commercial vehicle outputs in the UK crashed last month, with just 2,689 vans built in factories last month. This is down a monumental 77 per cent on the 11,600 output in June 2024.
However, passenger car production increased slightly during the previous month, up 6.6 per cent to just over 66,300 units. The trade body said this was partially a result of growth linked to the US-UK trade agreement. That said, the SMMT has remained modest about future outlooks. It is not expecting vehicle production to exceed one million units per year by the end of the decade. The last time this was achieved was in 2021.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Mr Hawes said that the government's own target of reaching 1.3 million vehicles per year by 2035 is 'quite some ambition from where we are', adding that 'we clearly require at least one, if not two, new entrants to come into UK production' to reach such an optimistic objective. While outputs are generally down, the SMMT's data does show that British manufacturing is at least moving with the times. Production of electrified vehicles - fully-electric, self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles - rose 1.8 per cent and now account for more than two in five motors made in Britain. This is a new record.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander will be hoping the reintroduction of grants of up to £3,750 towards the purchase of some EVs priced at or below £37,000 will help to drive outputs. While the SMMT said it will provide a welcome boost to increase private EV sales, there remains widespread confusion about which vehicles will qualify for the discounts - and more importantly, those that won't. Manufacturers are required to apply to be included in the grant scheme on a first-come, first-served basis. It is expected that Chinese and Korean vehicles will not meet the criteria, but little else is clear regarding how the £650million funding will be shared.
'The difficulty is, we don't know. Nobody knows, but nobody, not even government, really knows yet, which models and which brands will qualify,' Mr Hawes said yesterday in comments quoted by the BBC . 'I think the industry is still trying to get clarity behind its application. 'Right now, your dealer cannot tell you whether the model you are considering is eligible.' He believes a full list of eligible EV models will be released on 11 August, but the DfT has told This is Money it will reveal some of the qualifying cars ahead of that date, likely in the first week of next month. Hawes said clarity is needed imminently with September on the horizon.
The ninth month of the year is one of the two biggest for new car registrations due to the arrival of a new age identifier on number plates. A number of Chinese brands - named MG, Leapmotor and Great Wall Motor Ora - have already introduced their own discounts in the last week to match those provided by the Government's grant scheme in a clear indication that they believe they will not qualify. A transport department spokesperson said it expected 'dozens of models to be eligible for the electric car grant, which will provide a substantial boost for the industry and save drivers thousands of pounds'. 'We want the discounts to become available to drivers as soon as possible, and we are engaging extensively with vehicle manufacturers and have published guidance to help them apply as easily as possible,' they added.

A west London borough is set to ban Lime bikes following complaints of 'anti-social' parking on pavements and hand over contracts to a rival e-bike rental firm instead Hounslow Council terminated its two-year agreement with Lime due to riders blocking pavements and the high price. It comes as a victory to competing e-bike companies Forest and Voi who have both been given contracts to set up their bikes in the borough instead. Lime have the monopoly on e-bikes across London, owning most of the estimated 30,000 in the city. Companies submitted their bids for the highly-desirable contracts during a competitive procurement process. A council spokesperson said the decision was 'shaped by widespread community feedback' which found residents wanted 'stronger parking compliance, faster response times to resident concerns, and more tailored and affordable pricing'. A spokesperson for Lime told The Telegraph: 'Despite acknowledging the quality of our service was higher in our bid, Hounslow council selected another provider because it offered them more money. 'This is a really disappointing outcome for the thousands of Hounslow residents that rely on our bikes daily to connect to other areas of London.' The City of London seized more than 100 e-bikes in February amid a clampdown on pavement parking and dangerously dumped e-bikes. James Bolton, Voi's UK general manager, said: 'We're delighted to win this contract and extend our London e-bike pilot to Hounslow. 'We will work responsibly and closely with the council to ensure our scheme works for everyone in the borough, stretching from Bedfont Lakes Country Park in the west to Chiswick House Gardens in the east. A Forest spokesperson said: 'The Hounslow tender was a highly competitive process and we're delighted our bid stood out.' Lime bikes have become a nuisance for people who find them stacked up outside their homes, blocking walkways or abandoned in the road. Charities including the Sight Loss Council and the National Federation of the Blind of the UK have repeatedly warned councils about the bikes posing a trip hazard or unnecessary obstacles for blind people. Last month actor Robert Powell, 81, revealed he 'sent 570 photographs' to Camden Council showing the bikes taking over his doorstep. The Bafta-nominated actor urged the council to take action, saying that he and his wife, Barbara Lord, once counted at least 100 bikes in a parking bay in front of their Highgate home. 'You've got two octogenarians here who are in danger of being killed,' Powell said. 'The entire pavement has been blocked by bikes. Camden say they prioritise safety and safer travel, so do they know that allowing bikes on pavements is not safe for anyone? 'Last year we called the police about the bikes, they just laughed.' Riders can rent e-bikes on the street in London by picking them up with a mobile phone app, but they are often not required to put them in a designated area after use. This has led to them blocking pavements across the capital - with councils receiving thousands of complaints and some even threatening to ban hire firms altogether. Mr Powell admitted that he was 'terrified' of having a heart attack due to having to move 10 to 12 heavy bikes from the area each day. He said his GP has even written a letter to the council explaining how stressful the situation is for him and his wife. The spot is particularly busy as it is close to Hampstead Heath, the actor told the Camden New Journal. Camden Council responded by saying it is working to relocate the bay and has marked out a new bay further up the road. Last December, new powers to crack down on the scourge of e-bikes and e-scooters being dumped on pavements were hailed as the 'beginning of the end for the Wild West model'. Enforcement has however, become increasingly complex, although the new powers mean Mayor Sadiq Khan will able to fine users and operators who dump their devices in dangerous locations. It comes after Transport for London (TfL) warned rental e-bike operators could be fined as part of measures to tackle 'significant safety issues' around poor parking. In September, Brent Council threatened that Lime would have to remove its e-bikes from the borough by October 31 for allegedly ignoring its safety concerns amid 'havoc' caused by the cycles. But the council agreed to allow Lime to continue operating after the company addressed these concerns. In Hammersmith and Fulham, more than 100 e-bikes were seized by the council in August last year after complaints from residents that they were blocking roads and pavements. TfL revealed last November that rental e-bike operators could be fined as part of measures to fight back against poor parking in London. It published a new 'enforcement policy' in response to widespread concerns about e-bikes blocking pavements and said it will take action over dockless e-bikes being left on its red route road network outside designated places, and on its land such as station forecourts and bus garages. This brings e-bike regulations closer into line with those for rental e-scooters, which are already required to be parked in bays. It added that responses may include warning letters, fixed penalty notices (FPNs) to operators, prosecutions and removal of vehicles. FPNs would be £100 each, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

The Netherlands has said it will contribute €500m ($578m/£500m) to buy US military equipment for Ukraine, becoming the first Nato country to contribute to a new mechanism to supply Kyiv with American weapons. The Dutch defence minister, Ruben Brekelmans, said on X on Monday that the package would include Patriot parts and missiles. Nato's chief, Mark Rutte, welcomed the announcement and said he had encouraged other alliance members to participate in the new mechanism, called the Nato prioritised Ukraine requirements list (Purl) initiative. 'This is about getting Ukraine the equipment it urgently needs now to defend itself against Russian aggression,' Rutte – a former Dutch prime minister – said in a statement, adding that he expected 'further significant announcements from other allies soon'. SINGAPORE, Aug 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar wavered on Tuesday as the rising odds of Federal Reserve rate cuts weighed on sentiment, while investors assessed the broader economic impact of U.S. tariffs unleashed last week. The dollar remained under pressure following Friday's U.S. jobs report that showed cracks in the labour market, prompting traders to swiftly price in rate cuts next month. U.S. President Donald Trump's firing of a top statistics official and the resignation of Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler also exacerbated market unease, leading to a sharp dive in the dollar on Friday. The U.S. currency found its footing on Monday but was weaker in early trading on Tuesday. The euro last bought $1.1579 while sterling stood at $1.3298. The dollar index , which measures the U.S. currency against six other units, was at 98.688 after touching a one-week low earlier in the session. Traders are now pricing in a 94.4% chance of the Fed cutting rates in its next meeting in September, compared to 63% a week earlier, CME FedWatch tool showed. Goldman Sachs expects the Fed to deliver three consecutive 25 basis point cuts starting in September, with a 50 basis point move possible if the unemployment rate climbs further in the next report. The long-term impact of the tariffs though remains uncertain, with traders bracing for volatility. "This is going to be like the pandemic, we all expect to see the transitory impact on supply chains to happen very quickly," said Rodrigo Catril, currency strategist at National Australia Bank in Sydney. "It'll probably take six months to a year to see exactly where we land and who's going to be winners and losers from all this." In other currencies, the Australian dollar was 0.11% higher at $0.64736, while the New Zealand dollar rose 0.11% to $0.5914. "We're still of a view that the big dollar is heading down," Catril said, referring to the U.S. dollar. "While global growth means pro-growth currencies like Asian currencies and the AUD should struggle, we've other structural dynamics in the USD, where policies are dollar-negative."
