Tengku Zafrul Could Strengthen PKR, Especially In Selangor
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), if accepted, could further strengthen the party, especially in Selangor, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
He expressed confidence that he and the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry could forge even stronger cooperation if they were in the same party.
'I believe we can work closely together. In fact, we already have a good working relationship, even during his time as Finance Minister.

'Now, in his current role, we continue to collaborate, particularly in key sectors such as aerospace and semiconductors. If we are in the same party, I believe this cooperation can be further enhanced,' he told reporters after officiating the MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Programme at Dewan Seri Siantan in Selayang today.
Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul announced on Facebook that he had resigned from UMNO and expressed his intention to join PKR.
PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh confirmed today that the party has yet to receive a formal membership application from Tengku Zafrul.

Amirudin, who is also a PKR vice president, said he was confident that the party's ties with UMNO would remain intact, as both sides have built a foundation of mutual understanding.
Responding to speculation that Tengku Zafrul's move could be linked to efforts to replace him as Selangor Menteri Besar, Amirudin dismissed the suggestion.
'To me, that's far-fetched. I don't see it happening, especially since it would require a by-election.

He said the government remains functional despite the recent resignations of two ministers. 'There is no urgency for a reshuffle now. Two ministers have resigned, (and) we're giving them time to reflect on what they want to do. 'Now they are on leave. I already approved their leave. I don't think we should preempt,' he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here today. Anwar said the Cabinet continues to operate as usual and that temporary arrangements will be made to ensure continuity in governance. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that they had submitted their leave applications and resignation letters, which will take effect on June 17 and July 4, respectively. 'In the next Cabinet meeting, I will ask (other) ministers to cover (the portfolios of the Economy Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry),' he said. At the same time, the prime minister said he has instructed the secretaries-general of both ministries to continue carrying out their responsibilities. 'All secretary-generals have been asked to continue (their duties), because we are in the midst of serious negotiations... Asean, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), China and the United States, including over (US President) Donald Trump's tariff proposals,' he added. Both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi were defeated in the 2025 PKR elections held last month. Rafizi failed to retain his position as PKR deputy president after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Nik Nazmi lost in the contest for the vice-president post. Following their resignations, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement that the Prime Minister had received letters from both ministers requesting leave and to step down from their Cabinet positions. Drama around Tengku Zafrul's exit seems orchestrated, says Kedah Umno

PETALING JAYA : Kedah Umno is uncomfortable with what it has called 'a drama' and 'political manoeuvres' orchestrated by PKR following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's decision to quit Umno. Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said the statements released by PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari and PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim make the entire matter seem 'planned and celebrated'. 'The series of statements from PKR figures seem to send a direct message to Umno that etiquette does not matter in our cooperation and that political moves can be arranged without regard for the sensitivities of the main partners in the unity government,' he said in a statement today. Shaiful called for a stop to the 'drama' surrounding Tengku Zafrul for the sake of stable, honest and sincere political cooperation. 'We cannot continue to sacrifice our principles for the sake of power. Umno is ready to cooperate, not to be a plaything in the political narratives of others.' Shaiful also branded Tengku Zafrul, who is the investment, trade and industry minister, a 'first-class political tourist'. Yesterday, Amirudin said Tengku Zafrul's entry into PKR could bolster the party's credibility and expressed confidence that they could work well together. Kamil said Tengku Zafrul, being a corporate figure, could bring 'added value' to the party given the latter's experience. However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said any such application to join the party would have to go through the usual processes, taking into account the views and perspectives of the party's partners in the unity government. Tengku Zafrul's decision confirms rumours that spread in February that he would be leaving Umno and joining PKR before his term as a senator expires at the year end.

Nurul Izzah mooted 2nd deputy president's post, says Rafizi
Nurul Izzah Anwar had made the offer three days before PKR delegates cast their votes in the central leadership elections, said Rafizi Ramli. AMPANG JAYA : Rafizi Ramli who was defeated at the PKR elections last month, says Nurul Izzah Anwar had previously suggested the creation of an appointed post of PKR deputy president for Rafizi to fill. Rafizi said the offer, which he rejected, was made by Nurul Izzah at a meeting three days before PKR delegates cast their ballots in the party's central leadership elections. 'When she met me, she tried to propose having an appointed deputy president – me. But even if it were to be an appointed party president, I'm not interested, all the more other party posts,' he said today. 'Because this isn't a question of posts but the message we want to convey,' he said when met at an event organised by his Pandan parliamentary office here today. Rafizi failed to secure re-election as deputy president last month, losing to Nurul Izzah who received 9,803 votes to his 3,866 votes. He subsequently offered his resignation from his Cabinet post as economy minister. He said today that he will resume his duties as a normal MP and the head of the party's Pandan division. He is on leave from his official duties while his resignation is effective June 17. Rafizi had previously revealed that he had rejected a last-ditch appeal from Nurul Izzah to help her after the party polls ended. Rafizi said he believed that her plea stemmed from concerns over the new leadership lineup, which she feared would bring trouble for Anwar Ibrahim and PKR.
