Netanyahu to land in US after 'inconclusive' Gaza ceasefire talks

US President Donald Trump said there was a "good chance" of a hostage deal with Hamas "during the week," ahead of his upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "I think there's a good chance we have a deal with Hamas... during the coming week," Mr Trump told reporters amid mounting pressure on the Israeli prime minister to agree to a ceasefire and end the war in Gaza after almost two years. Mr Netanyahu said yesterday he hoped his talks in Washington could "help advance" a Gaza ceasefire deal. Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu are scheduled to meet at the White House - the Israeli prime minister's third visit since Mr Trump returned to power in January. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas were under way in Qatar yesterday. Two Palestinian sources familiar with the matter said that the first session of indirect talks ended inconclusively. They added that the Israeli delegation did not have a sufficient mandate to reach an agreement with Hamas. "After the first session of indirect negotiations in Doha, the Israeli delegation is not sufficiently authorized and is not authorized to reach an agreement with Hamas, as it has no real powers", the sources said. Mr Netanyahu said, before his departure to Washington, that Israeli negotiators taking part in the ceasefire talks have clear instructions to achieve a ceasefire agreement under conditions that Israel has accepted. Israeli hostages "We've gotten a lot of the hostages out, but pertaining to the remaining hostages, quite a few of them will be coming out," Mr Trump said. He said the United States was "working on a lot of things" with Israel, including "probably a permanent deal with Iran." Mr Trump also repeated claims that US strikes "obliterated" Iran's nuclear facilities during the 12-day Iran-Israel conflict. Since the start of Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, mediators have brokered pauses in fighting during which hostages were freed in exchange for Israel-held Palestinian prisoners. Of the 251 hostages taken by Palestinian militants during the October 2023 attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. Israel's military campaign, lack of food and dire humanitarian conditions for more than two million people in Gaza has killed at least 57,418 people there, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The United Nations considers the figures reliable. Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

Competitiveness summit to be held in Government Buildings

A summit on competitiveness will be held in Government Buildings today. The gathering, which will be attended by the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste and the economic ministers will focus on business competitiveness. Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke will address what needs to be done in order to retain jobs. He previously said he would be setting out "15 clear wins" or measures that the Government can take in the short term. He had said this will send a "really strong signal to business" that Ireland is going to retain the most competitive economy in Europe. Minister Burke will tell cabinet colleagues that major investment is needed in areas such as energy capacity, water services and housing to ensure Ireland does not lose out on the jobs of the future. Tánaiste Simon Harris will tell summit that the Government is working constructively to protect Irish jobs and investment and shield Irish businesses and consumers from any negative impacts. He will say that the Competitiveness and Productivity Action Plan will help insulate businesses from some uncertainties.

Israel carries out strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen

Israel said that it carried out a wave of strikes on the Yemeni port city of Hodeida and other areas held by the Houthi rebels. In a statement, Israel said its fighter jets had "struck and destroyed terror infrastructure belonging to the Huthi terrorist regime. Among the targets were the ports of Hodeida, Ras Isa, and Salif". It said the strikes were "in response to the repeated attacks by the Houthi terrorist regime against the State of Israel". Yesterday, the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah television station had reported that the "Israeli enemy is targeting the port of Hodeida," also reporting strikes on the ports of Ras Isa, Salif and Ras Al-Kathib power station. The attacks came around half an hour after an Israeli army spokesman warned of strikes at the sites on social media. Israel has carried out several strikes in Yemen including on ports and the airport in the capital Sanaa in response to repeated attacks by the Iran-backed group. Among the targets Israel claims to have struck was the Galaxy Leader cargo ship, which the Houthis captured in November 2023, and which the Israelis say has been outfitted with a radar system to track shipping in the Red Sea. Yemen's Houthi rebels have been launching missiles and drones at Israel since the Gaza war broke out in October 2023 after Palestinian militant group Hamas's attack on Israel. The Houthis, who say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians, renewed their assault in March after Israel resumed its military campaign in Gaza at the end of a two-month ceasefire in the Palestinian territory. They have also attacked shipping vessels they deem to be linked to Israel in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 2023. They broadened their campaign to target ships tied to the United States and Britain after the two countries began military strikes aimed at securing the waterway in January 2024.
