Bethell At 3, No Shoaib Bashir! David Lloyd Picks England's Playing XI For Ashes

Last Updated: The 2025-26 edition of the Ashes series between England and Australia will be played from November 21 to January 8 in five different venues across Australia. Former England all-rounder David Lloyd, who has now donned the hat of an expert and commentator, has picked England's playing XI for the 2025-26 edition of the Ashes series against Australia. This year's Ashes series will be played from November 21 to January 8, 2026, in five venues across Australia. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Optus Stadium in Perth from November 21 to 25. The Gabba in Brisbane will host the pink ball Day/Night Test from December 4 to 8, and the next three matches will be played in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, respectively. In his playing XI, Lloyd included Haseeb Hameed as opener and left-handed batter Jacob Bethell at No. 3. 28-year-old Hameed, who has 439 runs to his name in 10 Tests, last played in the whites for England in January 2022 against the Baggy Greens at Sydney Cricket Ground. In the ongoing County Championship Division One season for Nottinghamshire, Hameed has scored 1108 runs in 11 matches, which is the most by anyone. The right-handed batter has been backed by Lloyd to replace Zak Crawley as an opener. Crawley suffered a lot of criticism for his inconsistent form in the five-match Test series against India, which concluded on August 4 at The Oval. In his XI, Lloyd also excluded England's Test vice-captain Ollie Pope. Like Crawley, Pope also wasn't able to perform as per the expectations in the home series against the Shubman Gill-led side. The right-handed batter from Surrey played all five matches but, with the help of one century and one fifty, scored 306 runs in nine innings. Lloyd included Rehan Ahmed as a specialist spinner over Shoaib Bashir. The 21-year-old spinner has been on fire with the bat for Leicestershire in the ongoing County Championship Division Two. With the help of five centuries and one fifty, he has scored a total of 760 runs in 16 innings of 10 matches. With the ball, he has accounted for the dismissal of 23 batters in 10 matches. As fast bowlers, Lloyd mentioned Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer's names along with Chris Woakes. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IPL: Ashwin reveals how CSK pulled off a coup to secure Dewald Brevis

In a revealing insight into Chennai Super Kings' auction strategy, Ravichandran Ashwin explained how the franchise managed to pull off a coup to secure Dewald Brevis despite strong interest from other teams. In Ashwin's words, CSK landed themselves a "crown jewel" by signing Brevis as an injury replacement earlier this year during the his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed that several franchises were keen to sign Brevis as a replacement, but CSK succeeded by offering the player a higher fee after intense negotiations with his agents. Brevis was in high demand during the IPL, despite going unsold at the two-day mega-auction last year. Ashwin said multiple teams had engaged with the 22-year-old batting prodigy, but most backed out as they were unwilling to pay more than his base price (Rs 75 lakh) required to secure his had a wild second half of the season for CSK," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. "I heard 2-3 teams were in talks with him, but they weren't willing to pay extra, so negotiations fell through." Brevis was signed by CSK on April 18, midway through the IPL 2025 season. Chennai were struggling with their batting lineup in the tournament and desperately needed to bring in new players. The team signed Ayush Mhatre and Brevis as replacements and reaped the rewards in the final few games of the season."If I come now and do well, my value goes up. So pay me for that value.' CSK nailed it by getting him for whatever number he negotiated. Now, they've got themselves a crown jewel," Ashwin said."I genuinely feel CSK cracked their combination in the back half, and they'll head into the mini-auction with Rs 30 crore in hand, with the potential to assemble a tournament-winning side. CSK's next season is looking prime and proper," he lit up in the IPL 2025, hitting 225 runs in 6 matches. He scored two half-centuries and batted at a strike rate of 180. Brevis had recently smashed his maiden T20I century for South Africa against Australia, breaking several records in the process, including becoming the youngest from his country to achieve the feat. - EndsMust Watch

Marcus Stoinis Supports Private Investment In BBL Teams, Eyes 2026 T20 World Cup

Australian seam-bowling all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has expressed his support for introducing private ownership into Big Bash League (BBL) franchises, suggesting that the model successfully used by Indian Premier League (IPL) teams could also benefit Australian cricket. At the same time, he reaffirmed that his main focus remains on competing in next year's T20 World Cup. This year saw IPL franchise owners, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals, acquire stakes in teams from The Hundred, including Oval Invincibles, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, and Southern Brave. Cricket Australia recently announced it is open to private investment in BBL teams and is currently reviewing proposals provided by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Stoinis highlighted the success of IPL investors, saying, 'You want people who have a proven record of building something strong. If they replicate that in Australia, it's a win-win for everyone involved, including the sport itself.' Also Read: CPL 2025: When And Where To Watch? Schedule, Squads, Players, And All You Need To Know Currently representing Trent Rockets in The Hundred, Stoinis has retired from ODIs but remains available for T20I selection. His absence from Australia's current T20I series against South Africa follows discussions earlier this year with national coach Andrew McDonald and chief selector George Bailey about balancing international commitments with franchise opportunities. 'When an opportunity like The Hundred comes along, you can sign a contract for it, but you can't pick yourself for Australia. We made a plan in advance, and that made the decision smoother,' Stoinis explained. Bailey recently confirmed that Stoinis is 'firmly in the mix' for the T20 World Cup squad. The all-rounder acknowledged it felt strange watching his teammates play without him, but insisted he is satisfied with his choices. 'You still share a laugh and a few messages after games. Representing Australia has been one of the best experiences of my life, and I'm not done yet,' he said.
