Bethell At 3, No Shoaib Bashir! David Lloyd Picks England's Playing XI For Ashes
The 2025-26 edition of the Ashes series between England and Australia will be played from November 21 to January 8 in five different venues across Australia.
Former England all-rounder David Lloyd, who has now donned the hat of an expert and commentator, has picked England's playing XI for the 2025-26 edition of the Ashes series against Australia. This year's Ashes series will be played from November 21 to January 8, 2026, in five venues across Australia. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Optus Stadium in Perth from November 21 to 25. The Gabba in Brisbane will host the pink ball Day/Night Test from December 4 to 8, and the next three matches will be played in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, respectively.
In his playing XI, Lloyd included Haseeb Hameed as opener and left-handed batter Jacob Bethell at No. 3. 28-year-old Hameed, who has 439 runs to his name in 10 Tests, last played in the whites for England in January 2022 against the Baggy Greens at Sydney Cricket Ground.
In the ongoing County Championship Division One season for Nottinghamshire, Hameed has scored 1108 runs in 11 matches, which is the most by anyone.
The right-handed batter has been backed by Lloyd to replace Zak Crawley as an opener. Crawley suffered a lot of criticism for his inconsistent form in the five-match Test series against India, which concluded on August 4 at The Oval.
In his XI, Lloyd also excluded England's Test vice-captain Ollie Pope. Like Crawley, Pope also wasn't able to perform as per the expectations in the home series against the Shubman Gill-led side. The right-handed batter from Surrey played all five matches but, with the help of one century and one fifty, scored 306 runs in nine innings.
Lloyd included Rehan Ahmed as a specialist spinner over Shoaib Bashir.
The 21-year-old spinner has been on fire with the bat for Leicestershire in the ongoing County Championship Division Two. With the help of five centuries and one fifty, he has scored a total of 760 runs in 16 innings of 10 matches. With the ball, he has accounted for the dismissal of 23 batters in 10 matches.
As fast bowlers, Lloyd mentioned Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer's names along with Chris Woakes.

Markram Explains Rationale Behind Opening: 'Got Some Guys In The Middle...'
Last Updated: South Africa captain Aiden Markram will keep opening in T20Is to fit middle-order batsmen. The series against Australia is tied 1-1, with the decider. South Africa captain Aiden Markram stated that he will continue his new role as the opener in the T20I team to accommodate more middle-order batsmen. The three-match T20I series between South Africa and Australia is currently tied at 1-1, with the decider scheduled to be played in Cairns on Saturday. Markram had a successful IPL 2025 as an opener for Lucknow Super Giants, scoring five fifties in 13 innings at a strike rate of 148.82. However, he has not scored beyond fifty in T20Is since October 2022. 'Going through our squads and the players that we've got around, we think probably that (opening) is the best fit. We've got some guys in the middle order that are a lot more destructive than I am, and we feel probably it's better off for me and Ricks (Ryan Rickelton) to be up top." 'I did it a bit at the IPL and am starting to do it now again at international cricket. It's an exciting role. It's always nice to bat in the powerplay, and the focus is to get the team off to good starts," said Markram to reporters on Friday. Markram's opening partnerships with Rickelton have resulted in scores of 12 and 34. Although number three batsman Lhuan-dre Pretorius is yet to perform, Dewald Brevis brought cheer by scoring an unbeaten 125 in the second T20I. 'But there'll be occasions where you feel like the wicket might be on the slower side or might offer something, and you sort of take that punt. The way I try to operate is just go on my gut feel, whatever my gut's telling me in the moment, run with that and back that and reflect on what could have been and what should have been possibly after the game," he added. With South Africa having won only one of their last nine bilateral T20I series, including losing the tri-series final to New Zealand, Markram's focus is on reversing that record on Saturday. 'It feels like we are moving in the right direction. The series has been good so far. Our bowlers have performed well." 'The previous game made our batters look good, but it was very much an individual performance (Brevis hit an unbeaten 125). So a nice challenge for our batters tomorrow to hopefully click and for them to put on a good score." Mikel Arteta Asked Arsenal Players To Vote And Pick New Captain: 'Everybody Chose...'
Arsenal legend Tony Adams had suggested that Arsenal should hand the captaincy to Declan Rice. Mikel Arteta asserts that he and his players are confident in Martin Odegaard's abilities as Arsenal captain. The Norwegian player has been captain for three years, during which Arsenal finished second in the Premier League each season. This will not change as the Gunners prepare for their season opener at Manchester United on Sunday. Club legend Tony Adams suggested that Arteta should hand the captaincy to Declan Rice to help secure the team's first top-flight title since 2004. Arteta, a former Arsenal captain himself, has dismissed this idea. 'It's not just my opinion," he said Friday, 'it's all the staff and especially the players. I asked them to vote on the captain, and I got the results yesterday. By a mile — by 100 miles — everybody chose the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, which is the clearest sign you can have. 'It's how they feel about who should be their captain, to defend, improve, and win the matches we aim to win," Arteta added. 'There's no question about that." Odegaard also serves as Norway's captain. Three consecutive runner-up finishes won't discourage the team, Arteta said. 'You keep digging, digging, digging," he said. 'You have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. For three seasons, we have accumulated more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. Now we need to do it in a season to earn one more point than other teams… that's our objective." With AP Inputs view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Australia will be big challenge: Steve Smith fires warning at England before Ashes
Australian batter Steve Smith has issued a warning to England ahead of the upcoming Ashes, noting that although they impressed in their recent series against India, the conditions in Australia will be a much tougher last won the Ashes in Australia in 2010-11, securing a 3-1 series victory thanks to Alastair Cook's 766 runs and James Anderson's 24 wickets. Since then, they have failed to win a single Test on Australian soil, struggling against pace-friendly pitches and Australia's relentless bowling preparation for the Ashes, England drew their five-Test home series against India 2-2, playing an aggressive style of cricket but revealing weaknesses under pressure, especially in decisive moments. Australia's seasoned bowling line-up, combined with challenging home pitches, is expected to push England's batting to the limit as they try to end a 14-year winless streak Down Under.'Their series against India was one of the best I've seen in years. They play aggressive cricket, but batting in Australia will be a big challenge. Our wickets have been tricky, and we've got an experienced, successful bowling attack,' Smith told Sky Sports in an interview.'Joe Root has been outstanding'Smith, who's currently playing for Welsh Fire in the Hundred, hailed Joe Root ahead of the Ashes, noting that the English batters have made his starts count, especially in the last two the recent Test series against India in England, Root scored 537 runs in nine innings at an impressive average of 67.12, including three centuries and a fifty. Yet in Australia across 27 innings, he averages just 35.68 and remains without a Test century there.'He's been outstanding the past two years, turning 50s into big hundreds. He hasn't scored a Test hundred in Australia yet — I'm sure he'll be aiming for it, but hopefully he doesn't get it this summer.'We'll just let our skills do the talking. We know our conditions well and trust our game,' Smith upcoming Ashes starts on November 21 with the series opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth.- EndsMust Watch
