Mikel Arteta Asked Arsenal Players To Vote And Pick New Captain: 'Everybody Chose...'

News182 days ago
Arsenal legend Tony Adams had suggested that Arsenal should hand the captaincy to Declan Rice.
Mikel Arteta asserts that he and his players are confident in Martin Odegaard's abilities as Arsenal captain. The Norwegian player has been captain for three years, during which Arsenal finished second in the Premier League each season. This will not change as the Gunners prepare for their season opener at Manchester United on Sunday.
Club legend Tony Adams suggested that Arteta should hand the captaincy to Declan Rice to help secure the team's first top-flight title since 2004.
Arteta, a former Arsenal captain himself, has dismissed this idea.
'It's not just my opinion," he said Friday, 'it's all the staff and especially the players. I asked them to vote on the captain, and I got the results yesterday. By a mile — by 100 miles — everybody chose the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, which is the clearest sign you can have.
'It's how they feel about who should be their captain, to defend, improve, and win the matches we aim to win," Arteta added. 'There's no question about that."
Odegaard also serves as Norway's captain.
Three consecutive runner-up finishes won't discourage the team, Arteta said.
'You keep digging, digging, digging," he said. 'You have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. For three seasons, we have accumulated more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. Now we need to do it in a season to earn one more point than other teams… that's our objective."

Shardul Thakur Wants To 'Enhance Leadership Qualities' In Duleep Trophy

Last Updated: Shardul Thakur will captain West Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2025, aiming to enhance his leadership skills. The tournament runs from Aug 28 to Sep 15, featuring four Indian squads. Ahead of the Duleep Trophy 2025 season, Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur shared his thoughts on the competition, stating that he would use this opportunity to express himself. The tournament, scheduled from August 28 to September 15, will kick off the Indian domestic season 2025-26. Last year, the format changed from its traditional zonal structure to featuring four different Indian squads, A, B, C, and D, selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Shardul, expressing his views on Revsportz, said, 'The Duleep Trophy is one tournament where a player gets rewarded for their performance in previous seasons, or rather, throughout the whole season. The top 15 players from each zone play in the tournament, and the competition again gets tougher and a level up from what you play at the state level, where there is a mix of strong and not-so-strong teams. Duleep Trophy, on the other hand, is a competition among equals, so I would like to use this opportunity to express myself and show my talent." Shardul Thakur will captain the West Zone in the 2025 Duleep Trophy season. Although he has never led in the first-class format, he captained Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, a one-day tournament, in December 2024. Discussing his role as captain, the 33-year-old player said, 'I've been given a role and I'm leading the West Zone. So, rather than a challenge, it's more like an experience for me on the personal front, to understand what qualities a leader should possess. I believe I have a few, but using this tournament, I would want to enhance my leadership qualities further. I understand that as a captain, I will have to be available for the players, sit and discuss bowling styles and fielding positions, strategies, etc. Looking forward to what's going to open up for me in this leadership journey." West Zone Duleep Trophy squad: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Aarya Desai, Manan Hingrajia, Harvik Desai, Saurabh Nawale, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Jaymeet Patel, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Shardul Thakur (c), Tushar Deshpande and Arzan Nagwaswalla. Unrelenting Palace Hold Chelsea To 0-0 At Stamford Bridge

Chelsea struggled offensively in a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace. Palace's Eze had a goal disallowed by VAR. Nottingham Forest beat Brentford 3-1, easing pre-season concerns. Chelsea experienced a post-Club World Cup slump, narrowly securing a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener on Sunday. Palace were denied an early lead when Eberechi Eze's free-kick was disallowed following a VAR review, ruling Marc Guehi for obstructing the Chelsea wall. New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to scoring for the home team, but the recently crowned world champions struggled offensively against a well-organised Palace defence. Despite speculation linking Guehi and Eze with moves to Liverpool and Tottenham respectively, both players started for Palace. 'As long as they are 100 percent committed, they will play as they are so good," said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. 'They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great persons and that's what I expected." Eze believed he had scored with a powerful free-kick that beat Robert Sanchez, but the goal was disallowed due to Guehi creating a gap by pushing Moises Caicedo into the Chelsea wall. 'They played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two so we tried our best," said the Italian. 'We expected a tough game. Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn't concede any chances." Estevao, who scored against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in his final game for Palmeiras, showed promise but lacked composure when he missed a chance from the middle of the box. Nottingham Forest dismissed manager Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-season concerns over a lack of signings with a convincing 3-1 victory over a heavily rotated Brentford. Chris Wood scored twice, with Dan Ndyoe also netting on his debut for Forest, making it a tough afternoon for new Brentford boss Keith Andrews. 'It was a very good first half. The combinations were really good, beautiful goals," said Nuno. 'This is why we are insisting on a good balanced squad that gives us options and solutions." Brentford lost their manager, captain, and top scorer in the off-season. Thomas Frank left for Tottenham, Bryan Mbeumo moved to Manchester United, and Arsenal signed Christian Norgaard. Yoane Wissa was also absent, expected to join Newcastle. Igor Thiago's penalty goal late on was the only consolation for Brentford. 'I do have genuine belief but we have to take responsibility for a first half that wasn't good enough," said Andrews. view comments First Published: August 17, 2025, 22:01 IST News sports Unrelenting Palace Hold Chelsea To 0-0 At Stamford Bridge Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
